Abstract

Objective: Accordingly, the study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Security Council’s response to the Russo-Ukrainian War by examining its peacekeeping efficacy, decision-making processes, and enforcement of resolutions, thereby identifying strengths and weaknesses in these areas. Method: Anchored in a neorealist theoretical framework, the study adopted a qualitative design and employed content analysis to examine relevant United Nations documents and resolutions. Results: It found that the veto power of permanent members, especially when used by an involved party, paralyzed the Council’s decision-making and left its resolutions largely symbolic and unenforceable. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) norm was effectively sidelined, as the Council failed to invoke it despite evidence of mass atrocities. Consequently, the Security Council proved ineffective in enforcing compliance with its decisions or altering the course of the conflict, demonstrating a significant gap between its mandate to maintain peace and its performance in this war. Novelty: Finally, it recommended curtailing the use of the veto in mass-atrocity situations, urging that permanent members abstain from vetoing in such cases to prevent Council paralysis and enable timely action.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to answer a set of research questions, which can be stated as follows: What proportion of airtime does the program Legal Issues occupy compared to the total airtime of other programs on AlIraqiya Satellite Channel? What are the prominent legal topics that the program seeks to present and emphasize within the episodes aired? What are the main goals and functions the program aims to achieve through its presented topics, ideas, and legal issues? Method: This research is classified as a descriptive study, aiming to determine the scope of topics and functions performed by the Legal Issues television program. The study covers the period from June 1, 2024, to August 30, 2024, during which the recorded episodes of Legal Issues were aired, constituting one complete programming cycle. The researcher selected this period because it coincided with the study timeline, which allowed close monitoring of the Legal Issues program broadcast on AlIraqiya Satellite Channel. Results: Legal topics hold particular significance for the public as they contribute to building the audience’s knowledge base after becoming familiar with the enacted laws and regulations. By presenting legal topics through mass media, public awareness is enhanced, and individuals are provided with the skill of logical legal thinking, considering that such topics are important and complementary to social, political, and literary subjects. Novelty: The scientific problem addressed in this research lies in the fact that television seeks to perform and fulfil several functions, with the legal function being one of its key aspects. Therefore, television professionals strive to leverage its ability to influence, guide, and educate in order to achieve culturally and socially beneficial objectives in general, and legal objectives in particular, aimed at raising legal awareness and informing the public of their rights and obligations within the framework of prevailing legal systems.

Abstract

Objective: Cultural diversity in Iraq faces profound existential challenges that threaten the survival of religious and ethnic minority identities. This research analyses the manifestations of cultural extinction through the decline of mother tongues, the erosion of communal rituals, displacement and spatial uprooting, and the weakening of institutional presence among minority groups. Method: The study is grounded in an integrated theoretical framework that incorporates the concepts of cultural hegemony, symbolic violence, forced assimilation, and symbolic annihilation to understand the dynamics of this phenomenon. Results: The findings reveal that cultural extinction is not merely a gradual process of losing symbols but rather a reflection of structural power relations that reproduce symbolic inequalities through institutions such as education, media, the labour market, and religion. These transformations have direct implications for society at large, most notably the erosion of social capital, the fragility of cultural citizenship, the deepening of mistrust between the state and citizens, and the weakening of Iraq’s soft power in international arenas. Novelty: The study concludes that protecting cultural diversity is not only a humanitarian obligation but also a strategic necessity, as the sustainability of national stability requires genuine recognition of minorities, empowerment in decision-making, and safeguarding of their heritage and collective memory within a unifying national framework.

Abstract

Objective: This study elucidates Oprah Winfrey's address at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. It seeks to examine the many forms of lexical and grammatical coherence according to the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). Method: The data analysis indicated that the use of both lexical and grammatical cohesion significantly contributes to the development of cohesive, clear, and comprehensible speech. Results: The research indicated that "Repetition," a lexical cohesive technique, and "Reference," a grammatical cohesive device, were extensively used by Oprah to reinforce her message to the audience. She used these two categories with the others to enhance the efficacy of her speech and its persuasive impact. Novelty: Oprah Winfrey is a credible individual, transcending her role as a media icon, which imparts considerable influence to her statements among millions. Oprah's extensive influence and media presence make her endorsements of politicians a significant effect in shaping voting patterns. Her support of Kamala Harris at the 2024 Democratic National Convention exemplifies the significant voter interest her speech garnered.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the impact of sports programs on Iraqi youth, focusing on how these programs affect social, psychological and behavioral values, and aims to evaluate the role of sports programs in shaping positive and negative behaviors among young viewers. Method: This study is based on the descriptive and analytical method, where a random sample of 300 Iraqi youth between the ages of 18 and 30 years from all regions was selected, and data were collected by using a questionnaire to find out how many people watch sports programs, how good these programs are, and how they affect values like discipline, cooperation, and love for sports. Result: The results showed that sports programs have a significant positive impact on social values such as discipline and teamwork, as the results showed that viewing hours contribute to enhancing these values significantly, while the impact of programs on negative behaviors such as sports fanaticism was small, and statistical analyses, such as the Chi-square test and regression analysis, also showed that there is a strong relationship between watching sports programs and enhancing positive behaviors. Novelty: The study confirms that sports programs play an important role in promoting social and psychological values among Iraqi youth, with the need to work on reducing the negative effects related to sports fanaticism by improving the content of these programs.

Publisher : PT. Antis International Publisher

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.61796/ijss.v3i1.66

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the manifestation of deceit in Shakespeare’s Macbeth through pragmatic and critical discourse analysis, with specific aims of identifying the types of deception employed, uncovering the thematic topics that fuel persuasive deceit, and proposing an eclectic model for categorizing deceptive utterances based on Fairclough’s (1989) framework. Method: Employing a qualitative design, the research systematically examines textual evidence from the play, applying discourse-analytic techniques to classify and interpret deceptive strategies within the dramatic context. Results: The analysis reveals that directive speech acts dominate the early stages of deception, with prosperity, throne, pride, and power as recurring themes, while overstatements and violations of the quality maxim emerge as the most frequent forms of deceit. The study also indicates that concealment is scarcely observed, and speech acts with dual pragmatic force are rare. Novelty: By integrating Fairclough’s critical discourse model into an eclectic framework, this research advances a distinctive approach to literary pragmatics, offering new insights into how rhetorical deception is constructed and functions in shaping characters’ ideologies and the tragic trajectory of Shakespeare’s play.

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.61796/ijss.v3i1.67

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore how children’s shows are categorized on Iraqi television and to find out what they might do about social skills for children as well as awareness, logic, and creative thinking. Method: Our research was conducted using a quantitative methodology: questionnaires were given out to children, parents, and teachers in ODK (Open Data Kit) format, while the Smart Plus program was used for data analysis and hypotheses testing. Result: The first hypothesis showed that these programs help children develop various social skills such as cooperation, the courage to explore their world, and love for each other through fun, pedagogical ways. The second hypothesis confirmed that these programs build awareness and logic into young children by providing educational content that supports problem-solving and decision-making. The third hypothesis suggested that through creative narrative, interactive exercises, and puzzles designed to stimulate the brain, children’s shows encourage imaginative thinking. Novelty: The research concludes that children’s television programs, if integrated into a broader system of education involving interaction and practical engagement, can significantly foster holistic child development, highlighting the need for more interactive formats where parents, teachers, and students critically and creatively use the information rather than passively receiving it.
