Abstract

The increasing demands of society on educational institutions to produce high-quality future generations have pushed Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to integrate not only religious education but also economic empowerment through cooperative enterprises. This study aims to explore the role of service quality in influencing santri satisfaction within the Darussalam Islamic Boarding School Cooperative in Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency. Using a qualitative approach with a case study strategy, the research collected primary data through observation, interviews, and documentation involving santri who had made repeated purchases. The findings reveal that the cooperative plays a dual role as both a provider of essential goods and a platform for entrepreneurial education. Empathy, responsiveness, and reliability emerged as key service quality dimensions contributing to customer satisfaction. However, the study also identified structural limitations such as inconsistent service procedures and inadequate facilities. These results highlight the significance of aligning service quality with Islamic values and educational goals to enhance both satisfaction and institutional effectiveness. The study contributes to the literature by contextualizing service quality within faith-based educational settings and offers practical recommendations for strengthening cooperative operations in pesantren environments.

Abstract

Islamic banks operate based on Sharia principles that prohibit riba, gharar, and maysir, promoting a profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) model through Mudharabah and Musyarakah contracts. These contracts embody ideals of fairness and partnership, positioning the bank as a capital provider (shahibul maal) in Mudharabah, and as an equal partner in Musyarakah. However, despite their theoretical advantages, PLS-based financing faces substantial risks in practice, including moral hazard, information asymmetry, and limited monitoring capacity. This study aims to identify the main risks associated with these contracts, evaluate risk management approaches, and compare mitigation strategies across both financing schemes. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, the study collected, filtered, and synthesized scholarly publications from 2013 to 2023 sourced from Google Scholar, SINTA, DOAJ, OJK, and BI databases. The thematic analysis reveals recurring issues in governance, supervision, and policy alignment, while also outlining best practices and technological innovations for mitigating risk. This article contributes to both the theoretical understanding and practical application of risk management in Islamic finance by offering comprehensive insights for academic development, industry practices, and regulatory frameworks aimed at enhancing the sustainability and distinctiveness of Islamic banking through optimized equity-based financing models.

Abstract

Sharia Supervisory Boards (SSBs) play a crucial role in ensuring that Islamic banks operate in accordance with Islamic legal principles, serving as a key component of accountable and ethically grounded sharia governance. As the Islamic financial industry expands rapidly, concerns have emerged regarding the actual effectiveness of SSBs in carrying out their oversight functions. This study employs a narrative literature review approach to explore the strategic roles, challenges, and institutional effectiveness of SSBs based on a critical synthesis of peer-reviewed academic publications, regulatory reports, and other credible open-access sources published in the last decade. The findings reveal that while SSBs are formally embedded within Islamic banking structures, their practical impact often remains constrained by limited authority, structural dependency, and potential conflicts of interest. Furthermore, variations in competence, access to information, and standardization of governance practices also influence their performance. This article contributes to the academic discourse by systematically mapping the theoretical and practical dimensions of SSB functions and offering conceptual insights to strengthen sharia governance through more independent and credible oversight mechanisms aligned with the objectives of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in promoting community economic empowerment in Kota Kandis Dendang Village through the application of Islamic economic principles. Despite the presence of various development programs initiated by BUMDes, public participation remains limited, largely due to low awareness and engagement. By adopting a qualitative field research approach using an empirical juridical method, the study collected primary data through observation, structured interviews, and documentation involving five key informants. The findings reveal four main themes: lack of community involvement, efforts to implement Sharia values, managerial and regulatory challenges, and emerging signs of social and economic empowerment. BUMDes has initiated inclusive programs that reflect Islamic ethical values, fostering trust and local support. However, structural constraints such as insufficient institutional capacity and absence of formal Sharia governance frameworks hinder its optimal implementation. This research contributes to the academic discourse by framing BUMDes as a hybrid institution economic and ethical rooted in religious values, and provides a practical reference for enhancing rural governance through Sharia-based models.

Abstract

Islamic cooperatives serve as microfinance institutions that aim to integrate Islamic ethical values into financial practices, particularly in rural areas where access to formal banking remains limited. This study investigates the implementation of sharia principles in the savings and loan products of the Amanah Umat Cooperative in Dendang District, with a focus on the application of mudhārabah and musyārakah contracts. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to capture the experiences of cooperative members and staff. The results show that while the cooperative demonstrates an intention to adhere to Islamic principles such as justice, mutual cooperation, and the prohibition of riba its implementation is constrained by informal practices, limited literacy, and the absence of internal sharia supervision. The use of mudhārabah and musyārakah is frequently inconsistent with normative sharia standards due to lack of contract clarity and risk-sharing mechanisms. This study contributes both theoretically and practically by offering grounded insights into the challenges of operationalizing Islamic finance at the grassroots level and highlights the need for context-sensitive strategies to enhance sharia compliance in cooperative systems.
