Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a common genetic condition associated with intellectual limitations, specific health conditions, developmental delays, and distinctive physical characteristics. Children with Down syndrome experience delays in language development, particularly in phonological, syntactic, and pragmatic aspects, resulting in slower acquisition of speech sounds compared to typically developing children. Minimal pairs is a linguistically based, production-oriented approach that uses pairs of words differing by only one phoneme to train sound discrimination. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of the use of the Minimal pairs method on the phonological abilities of children with Down syndrome in Surakarta. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design using a one-group pre-test–post-test design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a total of 6 participants. Data analysis was conducted using parametric statistical tests, namely the Shapiro-Wilk test and the Paired T-Test. Results: The results of the Paired T-Test showed a p-value (Sig.) of 0.037, where p < 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that there is a significant difference in phonological abilities of children with Down syndrome before and after the intervention. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of the use of the Minimal pairs method on the phonological abilities of children with Down syndrome in Surakarta. Abstract

Background: The use of biofeedback in training programs can provide direct visual or auditory feedback so that muscle activation needs can be monitored and maintained to produce more efficient muscle contractions. This makes energy use and contractions more selective in the muscles being trained. In addition, the use of biofeedback also provides motivation during exercise. Biofeedback can display changes in muscle activation patterns such as onset and peak contraction of several muscles during weightlifting. A common problem in weight training is the magnitude of co-contraction between agonist and antagonist muscles, which often leads to decreased energy efficiency and disrupted movement patterns, indicated by compensatory movements during lifting. Co-contraction of agonist and antagonist muscles is very high in beginners during weight training and decreases as motor control improves. Objectives: To determine the effect of using auditory biofeedback in increasing selective activation of the pectoralis muscle during dumbbell chest press weight training. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional observation involving 50 adolescent subjects. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was attached to the pectoralis muscle to monitor muscle activation values during dumbbell chest press exercise. In the first session, the dumbbell chest press was performed without auditory feedback, but the sEMG remained attached and muscle activation results were monitored by the sEMG operator. In the second session, the dumbbell chest press was performed with auditory feedback. The results of pectoralis muscle activation based on sEMG recordings between exercises without and with auditory feedback were then compared. Results: The pectoralis muscle activation value during dumbbell chest press without auditory feedback had an average value of 63.38 ± 23.48 µV, whereas with auditory feedback the average was 82.55 ± 26.72 µV, with a significance value of p < 0.001. Conclusion: The average value of pectoralis muscle activation is higher when using auditory feedback compared to without it. Therefore, pectoralis muscle activation is greater when auditory feedback is used in weight training than without auditory feedback. Abstract

Background: The aging process causes a decrease in body function, especially in the musculoskeletal system, such as reduced muscle strength, flexibility, endurance and bone density which can increase the risk of falls in the elderly. A decrease in muscle strength in the upper extremities is characterized by a decrease in gripping ability, while in the lower extremities it is characterized by a decrease in walking ability, including walking speed. Objectives: This study aims to determine the relationship between grip strength and walking speed in elderly women. Methods: This research uses an observational method with a cross sectional approach. Measurements were made on grip strength using a handgrip dynamometer measuring instrument and walking speed using a 4 meter walk test measuring instrument on elderly women who were physically healthy and did not experience functional disorders, especially the function of grasping and walking independently. The data was analyzed to determine the relationship between the two variables. Results: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between grip strength and walking speed with a p value <0.005 and a correlation coefficient r = -0.555 which showed a fairly strong relationship in the negative direction. where the decreasing grip strength increases the walking speed of the elderly. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is a fairly strong relationship between grip strength and walking speed in elderly women. Keywords: Grip Strength, Walking Speed, Elderly Women.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common health problem among the elderly and increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and kidney failure. Isometric Handgrip Training (IHT) is a simple and practical non-pharmacological intervention that may help reduce blood pressure; however, its effectiveness still needs further investigation. Jatirahayu Public Health Center is one of the health centers with a relatively high number of hypertension cases, reaching 252 cases. Objectives: To determine the effect of Isometric Handgrip Training on blood pressure among elderly patients with hypertension. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 20 respondents divided into an intervention group (n=10) and a control group (n=10) selected using purposive sampling. The intervention group received IHT exercises three times per week for four weeks, while the control group only received health education through leaflets. Blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Results: The paired sample t-test showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure in the intervention group with a mean difference of −10.40 mmHg (p=0.004) compared to −1.50 mmHg in the control group, as well as a reduction in diastolic blood pressure with a mean difference of −6.80 mmHg (p=0.016) compared to −0.80 mmHg in the control group. The independent sample t-test showed a significant difference between the intervention and control groups in systolic blood pressure (p=0.008), but not in diastolic blood pressure (p=0.051). Conclusion: Isometric Handgrip Training was effective in reducing systolic blood pressure among elderly patients with hypertension, but it did not show a significant effect on diastolic blood pressure after four weeks of intervention. Abstract

Background: Upper extremity performance is an important component in basketball that influences the success of techniques such as passing and shooting. Core muscle stability serves as the linking mechanism for force transfer from proximal to distal segments; insufficient core stability can reduce movement accuracy and arm strength. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of adding core stability exercises on upper extremity performance in basketball athletes. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The sample consisted of 28 basketball athletes aged 14–18 years selected by purposive sampling, divided into a treatment group (routine training + core stability, n=14) and a control group (routine training only, n=14). The intervention was conducted for 4 weeks at a frequency of 3 times per week. Upper extremity performance was measured using the Upper Quarter Y-Balance Test (UQYBT). Results: Based on paired Sample T-Test results showed significant improvement in upper extremity performance in both the treatment group (p=0.000) and the control group (p=0.001–0.002). The mean improvement of the treatment group was greater than the control group: 1.21±0.53 (right) and 0.93±0.45 (left) compared to 0.41±0.37 (right) and 0.29±0.29 (left). The Independent T-Test showed a significant difference between the two groups (p=0.000). Conclusion: The addition of core stability training significantly improved upper extremity performance in basketball athletes, with a greater effect compared to routine training alone. Abstract

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a permanent neurological disorder that causes motor impairments in children, affecting their functional abilities, mobility, and social participation. Therapeutic interventions and the severity of cerebral palsy are thought to play a role in improving the functional abilities of children with CP. However, studies that comprehensively assess these factors remain limited, particularly in Indonesia. Objectives: This study was conducted to identify factors contributing to the functional abilities of children with CP using an evidence-based approach. Methods: This study employed a retrospective cohort design with multivariate analysis. Secondary data were obtained from the 2024 PPRBM database. Analysis was conducted in stages, beginning with descriptive analysis to characterize the sample, followed by bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test and General Linear Model. Results: A combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy was found to be significantly associated with improved functional ability (OR = 4.3; 95% CI: 1.15–16.16). Children with mild CP showed a significant reduction in the risk of functional disability (OR = 0.0; 95% CI: 0.00–0.02; p < 0.001), while those with moderate CP also showed a significant effect (OR = 0.2; 95% CI: 0.03–0.81; p < 0.05). In the severe and moderate-to-severe CP categories, there was a trend toward a negative association, though it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The severity of Cerebral Palsy is the most dominant and significant factor influencing the functional ability of children with CP. Keywords: Cerebral Palsy, Functional Ability, Therapy.
