Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a two-tier multiple choice (TTMCQ) instrument to measure senior high school students’ science process skills (SPS) in acid-base chemistry. Following Borg and Gall’s modified research and development design (nine stages), the instrument was developed, validated, and tested in two public high schools in Bengkulu, Indonesia. Validation involved content experts, assessment specialists, and experienced chemistry teachers. Field trials were conducted with 119 students, and data were analyzed for validity, reliability, item difficulty, and discrimination indices. Results show that the TTMCQ instrument demonstrated strong validity, high reliability, appropriate difficulty distribution (53% easy, 42% medium, 5% difficult), and sufficient discriminating power. Teachers reported positive perceptions, noting that the instrument effectively challenges students’ reasoning and enhances their SPS. The study highlights the potential of TTMCQ instruments as practical tools for formative and summative assessment in science education.

Abstract

Improving teacher performance has become a central concern in educational research, as teacher effectiveness is strongly linked to student achievement and the overall quality of schooling. This study aimed to investigate the influence of principals’ leadership style and teachers’ work motivation on teacher performance in junior secondary schools in Sungai Rotan District, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 98 teachers using a structured questionnaire that measured leadership style, work motivation, and teacher performance, with validity and reliability established through expert review, factor analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression with SPSS. The results indicated that both leadership style and work motivation had significant positive effects on teacher performance, with work motivation showing a stronger influence, while the combined model explained 34.3% of the variance in teacher performance. The discussion suggests that principals who demonstrate supportive leadership practices can enhance teachers’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, which in turn improves their instructional planning, classroom management, and professional responsibility. This study contributes novelty by examining the simultaneous influence of leadership and motivation in the Indonesian junior secondary school context, a relationship that has been underexplored in prior research. The findings imply that effective leadership development and motivational support are essential strategies for policymakers and educational practitioners seeking to improve teacher performance and strengthen school effectiveness in developing country contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an assessment instrument to measure junior high school students’ creative thinking skills in learning about chemical materials in daily life. The research employed the Borg and Gall research and development (R&D) model, adapted into eight stages: needs analysis, data collection, product design, expert validation, design revision, small-scale trial, product revision, and implementation trial. The study was limited to the small-scale trial phase. Validation instruments consisted of questionnaires administered to experts in assessment, subject matter, and language, as well as to one science teacher and 10 seventh-grade students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by calculating the percentage of achievement in each component. Results indicated high validity: 87.69% (assessment expert), 95.5% (language expert), and 82% (material expert), categorized as “very feasible.” Student responses also showed high acceptance, ranging from 72% to 90% across components. These findings confirm that the developed assessment instrument is valid and feasible to be used as a learning tool in science education, with potential to enhance creative thinking in junior high school students.

Abstract

This study examines whether pop-up book teaching media are associated with students’ learning interest in science, focusing on the human respiratory system topic. A quantitative correlational design was employed with a purposive sample of 21 eighth-grade students (class VIII-A) from SMP Negeri 21 Bengkulu Selatan, Indonesia. Learning interest and perceptions of the pop-up book were measured using validated Likert-type questionnaires totaling 32 items (16 items per construct). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s product–moment correlation and a follow-up significance test. Results showed a strong positive association between the use of pop-up book media and students’ learning interest (r = 0.781, p < 0.05), confirmed by a significant t-value (t(19) = 5.446 > t_table = 2.093). These findings indicate that innovative three-dimensional, interactive print media can meaningfully enhance students’ engagement with science content that is typically abstract at the lower-secondary level. The study contributes empirical evidence from an Indonesian junior-high context and offers practical implications for teachers to adopt visually rich, hands-on instructional tools to stimulate learning interest.

Abstract

This study investigates the cultural significance of the Nundang Padi tradition practiced in Selali Village, Pino Raya District, South Bengkulu, Indonesia. The research aimed to explore both the meaning and the social functions of this agrarian ritual, which has been maintained across generations as a form of oral tradition. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with cultural leaders and community members, and documentation of ritual practices. The findings reveal that the Nundang Padi tradition embodies two layers of meaning: denotative, reflecting gratitude for the harvest and preparation of seeds for the next planting cycle, and connotative, representing emotional and symbolic attachments to ancestral heritage and harmony with nature. In terms of function, the ritual serves recreational and aesthetic purposes through performances and dances, conveys moral and didactic values by transmitting cultural norms to younger generations, and fulfills religious functions by expressing collective prayers for safety and prosperity. These findings highlight the importance of Nundang Padi as an intangible cultural heritage that sustains social cohesion and reinforces community identity in an era of modernization. The study contributes to broader discussions on cultural resilience and underscores the need to preserve oral traditions as vital elements of sustainable cultural development.
