Abstract

Emotion regulation is a fundamental ability that plays an important role in the success of learning processes for elementary school-aged children. This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of elementary school students' experiences of emotion regulation and its relationship with their learning ability in the real school context. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design. Ten fifth-grade students from SD Negeri 136 Palembang were selected purposively as main informants, along with four classroom teachers and three parents. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and member checking. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke's (2022) thematic analysis technique. Three main themes were identified: (1) negative emotional experiences as barriers to learning, (2) emotion regulation strategies used by students, and (3) the role of the school and family environment in supporting emotion regulation. Emotion regulation is not merely an internal factor but a socially and contextually constructed process. Holistic interventions involving both teachers and parents are essential to optimize elementary school students' learning ability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the school environment in shaping the emotional well-being of elementary school students. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method, conducted with third-grade students at SD Negeri 85 Palembang. The study subjects consisted of one teacher and six students, selected purposively. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions using thematic analysis. The results showed that students' emotional well-being is significantly influenced by three main dimensions of the school environment: social, physical, and cultural. Specifically, empathetic and communicative teacher-student interactions have been shown to increase students' self-confidence and active participation in learning. Supportive peer relationships encourage students' comfort and courage in expressing their opinions, while negative interactions, such as light teasing, tend to decrease self-confidence and learning engagement. Physically, clean, well-organized classrooms with good lighting and ventilation improve concentration and emotional stability, while noise and uncomfortable temperatures trigger restless behavior. Furthermore, a school culture that instills the values of discipline, responsibility, and mutual respect contributes to positive student emotional regulation. These findings indicate that the school environment acts as a complex and dynamic system in contextually shaping students' emotional states.

Abstract

The phenomenon of declining social awareness among adolescents indicates that prosocial behavior has not developed optimally, which is thought to be related to low levels of individual empathy. Empathy, as the ability to understand and feel the emotional conditions of others, plays an important role in encouraging the emergence of prosocial behavior. This study aims to describe the level of empathy, describe the level of prosocial behavior, and examine the relationship between empathy and prosocial behavior in high school students. The respondents of this study were 254 students of SMA Negeri 4 Pariaman in grades X, XI, and XII, selected through a stratified random sampling technique. The study was conducted with a quantitative approach using a correlational method. The instruments used were the Student Empathy Scale and the Student Prosocial Behavior Scale using a Likert scale. Data were analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test with the help of SPSS software version 27.0 for Windows. The results showed that the level of empathy was generally in the high category (65.75%), while the level of prosocial behavior was generally in the medium category (63.39%). The correlation analysis of the two variables showed a significant and positive relationship (r = 0.643; p <0.05).  The research results show that higher empathy tends to increase prosocial behavior. These findings should serve as a basis for school counselors and educational institutions in designing programs and interventions to enhance and develop empathy and prosocial behavior in students.

Abstract

This study examines the role of songko’ recca, a traditional Bugis headwear, as a mechanism of value internalization and informal social control within the community. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and visual documentation. The findings reveal that songko’ recca functions beyond a cultural or religious symbol, serving as a medium through which social and religious values are internalized into individual consciousness. Through repeated use and shared meanings, the symbol fosters self-regulation, encouraging individuals to align their behavior with societal norms. Additionally, songko’ recca operates as an informal social control mechanism by generating social expectations, symbolic surveillance, and collective judgment in everyday interactions. The study demonstrates that symbolic practices can simultaneously shape internal awareness and regulate external behavior. Theoretically, this research integrates perspectives of symbolic interactionism, value internalization, and social control to explain how cultural symbols function as active agents in social life. Practically, the findings highlight the potential of culturally embedded symbols in developing context-based approaches within Community Counseling and Cross-Cultural Counseling. This study contributes to expanding the understanding of religious symbols as dynamic mechanisms for psychosocial regulation in society.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of maladjustment among new students at the Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo, specifically their difficulties adjusting to the environment, rules, and patterns of life at the boarding school. This problem results in low motivation, stress, and even rule-breaking behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of the boarding school administrators in reducing maladjustment among new students, identify the forms of maladjustment that arise, and describe the Islamic counseling program implemented at the boarding school. The research method used a descriptive qualitative approach with a post-positivist paradigm. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and structured interviews with administrators, students, and their families. The results indicate that maladjustment among new students manifests as a lack of discipline, homesickness, difficulty establishing social relationships, and rule violations. The boarding school administrators play a crucial role in fostering discipline, providing religious guidance, and providing counseling services based on Islamic values. The counseling program includes the administrators' role in maintaining justice and equality in the application of sanctions for disciplinary violations.

Abstract

Drug abuse is a complex social problem that has widespread impacts on physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of life. One of the main challenges in the rehabilitation process is the high risk of relapse, which is often influenced by low levels of individual self-control. This study aims to analyze the process of developing self-control as an effort to prevent relapse among rehabilitation patients at IPWL YPI Nurul Ichsan Al-Islami. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The subjects consisted of rehabilitation patients and counselors selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation and method triangulation. The results showed that the development of self-control occurs gradually and holistically, covering behavioral, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual aspects. This process is carried out through detoxification, mental and spiritual guidance, and the formation of positive habits. Rehabilitation programs such as individual counseling, group counseling, and religious guidance play a significant role in enhancing self-control. Supporting factors include internal motivation, family support, and a conducive rehabilitation environment, while inhibiting factors include negative environmental influences and unstable psychological conditions. In conclusion, self-control is a key factor in preventing relapse and is developed through a holistic approach integrating psychological and spiritual aspects.

Abstract

This research is titled "The Application of Group Counseling with Role Playing Techniques in Reducing Abusive Language in Elementary School Children." The study aims to analyze the use of abusive language among elementary school children, which is a common issue in their social development and can interfere with interpersonal relationships. The use of abusive language is often caused by the children's inability to manage their emotions and express their feelings in more positive ways. Therefore, role-playing techniques were chosen as a method to help children practice better social skills and develop empathy towards others. This research uses a qualitative approach with five child subjects selected based on the abusive language problems they faced. Data was collected through interviews with the children, teachers, and social community, direct observation during group counseling sessions, and documentation of the children's development over four counseling sessions. The results of the study show that the implementation of group counseling with role-playing techniques is effective in reducing the use of abusive language among children. Children who previously often used abusive words in social interactions began to show improvements in emotional regulation and chose more polite words when facing situations that triggered frustration or anger. Furthermore, through role-playing sessions, children practiced more constructive ways to resolve conflicts with peers or teachers without using hurtful language. An increase in empathy was also observed, with children becoming more aware of the negative impact of abusive language on others' feelings and making efforts to improve their social relationships. Overall, role-playing techniques have been shown to help children replace harsh emotional expressions with more effective communication and build healthier social relationships.
