Abstract

This article examines stickers as a visual communication medium that operates beyond its graphic function, placing it as a discourse of identity and an artifact of memory in the visual practices of Visual Communication Design (DKV) students. Based on the perspectives of material culture and visual discourse, this study maps the shift in contemporary visual culture from large-scale media to portable micro-visual objects that are easily circulated in social interactions. This study uses an interpretive qualitative approach with visual discourse analysis methods to examine the process of production, distribution, and use of stickers in the context of student event campaigns. The results of the analysis show that stickers function as a performative medium that mediates the construction of identity, social affiliation, and collective experience. The practices of giving, sticking, and storing stickers show that the meaning of stickers is not solely determined by their visual representation, but also by the social relations and cultural context surrounding their circulation. Thus, stickers can be understood as a visual discourse that actively shapes the dynamics of visual culture in the academic environment of Visual Communication Design, while also emphasizing the importance of micro visual objects in the ecology of contemporary visual communication.

Abstract

A mascot is a visual identity element that plays an important role in shaping the image and appeal of an event. Porsimaptar (Sports and Arts Week for Students, Pupils, and Cadets) is a prestigious annual competition organized by the Semarang Police Academy (Akpol). The official Porsimaptar logo features the silhouette of Gajah Mada, a national hero who is a symbol of unity and fighting spirit, but until now has not been realized in the form of a representative three-dimensional (3D) mascot. This design aims to create a 3D mascot with the character of Gajah Mada that elevates the visual identity of the Porsimaptar logo while presenting a fun and friendly impression to all participants. The method used is Design Thinking with five stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. The design process was carried out using Blender software as the main medium for 3D modeling and rendering. This 3D mascot is expected to be a consistent and adaptive visual asset for various Porsimaptar promotional media.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a comprehensive visual identity system for the Dusun Semilir tourist area in Semarang Regency to address issues of spatial navigation and branding inconsistencies. Using a research and development (R&D) methodology with a modified 3D model, specifically the Define, Design, and Develop phases, this study focuses on redesigning the existing beaver mascot, creating custom typography, and refining the tourist map. The results indicate that transforming the generic mascot into a 3D character with a strong personality enhances visitors’ emotional connection. Additionally, a custom typography inspired by the mascot’s anatomy was successfully created to ensure consistency across all promotional media. These elements were then fully integrated into the tourist map, designed with a systematic layout and visual hierarchy. Through this research, it was found that combining a 3D mascot, custom typography, and a tourist map into a unified system (bundling system) proved effective in addressing navigation challenges in large scale tourist areas. This integrated approach strengthens the destination’s professional image and enhances the quality of the visitor experience.

Abstract

The Phinisi ship currently serves as a maritime cruise vessel actively reaching local and international tourists at destinations such as Bali and Labuan Bajo. This study aims to analyse how the application of bombang lipa' sabbe motif ornament on the Phinisi ship contributes to strengthening Bugis cultural visual identity and advancing design based cultural tourism. A qualitative descriptive method with an exploratory case-study approach is employed, integrating visual identity theory, culture-based design, and experience economy theory. Findings indicate that the application of bombang motif ornament on the Phinisi effectively functions as a visual identity system reinforcing the Bugis maritime cultural narrative, a cross lingual cultural communication medium for international visitors through visual elements and bilingual information panels, and a contributor to experiential tourism through the creation of immersive and authentic cultural experiences aboard the vessel. This study recommends the development of a more comprehensive Bugis maritime cultural visual identity system grounded in the full range of lipa' sabbe motifs for application across diverse maritime tourism touchpoints.

Abstract

The growing popularity of Korean pop culture has increased public interest in various K-pop products, including T-shirt merchandise. However, most merchandise designs are still dominated by idol photographs, group logos, or member portrait illustrations, resulting in limited visual variety and creativity. This project aims to design a fan-made T-shirt inspired by the music videos of the boy group CORTIS using a comic strip illustration approach and to evaluate fans’ responses to the resulting design. The design process employed the Design Thinking method, consisting of the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and testing stages. Data were collected through literature review, observation, documentation, and questionnaire distribution to K-pop fans as the target audience. The design concept was developed based on an analysis of fan preferences and a visual study of the “JoyRide” and “Fashion” music videos, which were then translated into manga-style comic strip illustrations. The final outcome is a fan-made T-shirt merchandise design that highlights themes of self-expression, friendship, and teenage life. Feasibility testing using a Likert scale showed highly positive responses from participants. The design achieved an average score of over 81%, indicating that it falls within the “highly feasible” category. These findings demonstrate that comic strip illustrations can serve as a communicative, creative, and relevant visual approach for fan-made K-pop T-shirt merchandise.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an educational board game named "JAGATE" as an interactive edutainment medium integrating local wisdom to enhance tourism literacy among youth in Tegal Regency. The study addresses the lack of responsive promotional media, which previously left 70% of local youths knowing fewer than 10 out of 74 regional tourism sites. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE framework combined with a descriptive mixed-methods approach, data collection mapped key destinations and linguistic nuances. The design features a Modular Tile-Laying System with 180 hexagonal path tiles and an Action Point strategy. Results from group playtesting showed that the media operates effectively, generating a minimum 30% increase in post-test tourism literacy scores. The game successfully transforms passive textual information into an immersive spatial-geographical learning experience while preserving the local Tegalan dialect through competitive play.
