Abstract

This study explores the visual representation of river pollution and global warming in advertisements related to natural ecosystems, using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. It focuses on how visual signs, such as polluted water, industrial smoke, melting ice, and vulnerable human figures, construct layered meanings that extend beyond their literal appearances. Through denotation, connotation, and myth, these elements convey urgent environmental messages while embedding cultural narratives and emotional appeals. The environmental issues raised in these advertisements not only depict the impact of ecological destruction but also reflect the tension between destructive human activities and the need for ecological balance. Such visualizations demonstrate how visual media play a significant role in shaping public awareness of environmental issues and encouraging changes in attitudes toward the natural world. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes selected digital campaigns to understand how advertisements build ecological awareness and construct the myth of restoring harmony between humans and nature, ultimately aiming to strengthen collective responsibility for environmental sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the role of qualitative methods and semiotic analysis in investigating the symbolic attributes and tifos created by La Grande Indonesia (LGI) during the Indonesia vs. Bahrain football match on March 25, 2025, at Stadion Gelora Bung Karno, with a focus on conveying messages of national identity, supporter solidarity, and patriotism. Employing Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, the research analyzes primary data from direct observations, photographic documentation, and Instagram content from official LGI and illustrator accounts, supplemented by secondary data from academic literature and media archives. Key visual elements, including the Garuda symbol, the colors red and white, and banners such as “Garuda Fly Alone, Bulbuls Flock Together” and “Jaya Raya Indonesia,” were decoded across denotative, connotative, and mythic levels. The findings reveal that the Garuda symbolizes national strength and independence, while collective displays of flags and tifos foster a sense of solidarity among supporters. The “Jaya Raya Indonesia” banner, tied to a 1-0 victory, reinforces a mythic narrative of national pride and love for the homeland. Triangulation of data sources ensured validity, confirming that these symbols and attributes serve as powerful communicative tools that extend beyond aesthetics to embed cultural values within the sporting context. The study concludes that semiotic analysis effectively uncovers the deep meanings embedded in tifos and banners, highlighting their role in mobilizing nationalistic sentiments and collective identity among Indonesian supporters. This approach highlights the importance of qualitative methods in examining the sociocultural aspects of sports, providing insights into how visual symbols shape and reflect national consciousness in competitive contexts.

Abstract

This study examines how Minangkabau cultural values are represented in the design and motifs of tarompa datuak, which are traditional footwear worn by traditional figures in traditional events. The problem discussed is how the visual symbols of tarompa datuak reflect the traditional wisdom and social values of the Minangkabau people amidst the threat of modernization to their culture. This study uses qualitative methods and an ethnographic approach. This includes interviews with craftsmen and direct observation. The results of the study show that the traditional designs and motifs of tarompa datuak, such as variations of the tarompa datuak design and one of the motifs that is often used, namely the Itiak Pulang Patang motif, which philosophically symbolizes order, togetherness, and local wisdom, illustrate the importance of maintaining harmony and returning to the origin in community life. Not only to beautify, but also to symbolize courage, wisdom, and spirituality that reflect cultural identity. Tarompa datuak is a symbol of culture and a cultural education tool that shows the importance of tradition in the life of the Minangkabau people.

Abstract

Financial literacy is a crucial aspect of modern life. However, the younger generation often faces difficulties in understanding economic concepts. Comic strips come as an alternative media that is easier to access and understand, utilizing a combination of visuals and narration to convey information more effectively (Paivio, 1986). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of comic strips as well as the level of audience understanding of financial literacy. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research analyzes audience acceptance of inflation-themed comic strips published through various digital platforms. Data was collected through observation, content analysis, and in-depth interviews with audiences who have read the comic strip. The results show that comic strips are effective in improving basic understanding of inflation, as they are able to simplify complex economic concepts. This is in line with McCloud's (1993) research, which states that comics can increase emotional engagement and appeal. However, the study also found that comic strips have limitations in conveying more in-depth information related to the technical aspects of inflation. This opinion is supported by Huston (2010), who asserts that optimal financial literacy requires a combination of various sources of information to achieve a more comprehensive understanding. Thus, this study contributes to the development of visual media-based financial literacy strategies.
