Abstract

Placemaking transforms space into place by arranging form, activity, and meaning aspects. In a historical urban village context, the physical forms of historical objects are often altered due to space scarcity and growing needs. It could weaken the historical meaning of the place. Digital technologies could represent the lost historical forms or activities as digital placemaking strategies. Combining the Pepper Ghost illusion technique and digital projection produces a virtual layer to represent past events superimposed onto the site's surroundings to strengthen the place's meaning. It provides a practical digital placemaking strategy for urban village communities. This study aims to evaluate the design prototype of the virtual layer strategy by identifying factors that affect design performance and proposing design recommendations. This study was conducted by experiment and prototype testing. Testing with participants involved semi-structured interviews for data collection and content analysis to identify the factors. This study also provides schematic design implementation in Kampung Kungfu Kapasan, Surabaya. The results recommend designing the screen on a human scale, balancing environmental brightness for content clarity and visual comfort, as well as integrating installation design and surrounding elements. The overlapping strategy of past and present conditions forms a virtual layer as a layered enclosure. It affects how users perceive the surrounding environment, thereby shaping their perception of the place's meaning.

Abstract

The features of Muhammadiyah Islamic housing in Malang City show the connection between religious beliefs, cultural identity, and urban change. As a key modern Islamic movement, Muhammadiyah influences its members’ living habits through practical, ethical, and functional ideas. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study in the Karangbesuki Sub-District. It includes in-depth interviews, spatial observation, and document reviews. The findings indicate that Muhammadiyah housing has a simple and practical architectural style. It supports worship and social activities while keeping public and private spaces separate. In comparison to other urban Islamic communities in Malang, Muhammadiyah housing places more importance on logical planning and moral order rather than symbolic or decorative displays of faith. This research helps to understand how religious beliefs can create unique types of homes that combine spirituality, simplicity, and modern city living.

Abstract

Islam is a religion that not only brings spiritual and social teachings, but also gives birth to unique artistic and architectural traditions. Mosques as centers of worship, education, and social activities are an important medium in expressing Islamic aesthetic values, one of which is through the use of geometric patterns. These patterns are not merely decorative ornaments, but also have philosophical meanings that reflect the principles of order, unity, and eternity in the teachings of monotheism. This study aims to identify and analyze geometric patterns in the architectural elements of the Abdul Jalil Mosque in Jatipurno, Wonogiri Regency. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques in the form of direct observation, documentation, and interviews. The focus of the analysis is directed at the basic geometric forms, symmetry systems, and the aesthetic and symbolic values of the ornaments used. The results show that the dominant geometric pattern is fourfold symmetry, with basic shapes consisting of circles, rectangles, and repeating star patterns. These ornaments are applied consistently to the facade, mihrab, and other structural elements. This research is expected to become a reference in the development of locally based Islamic architecture and support the preservation of the heritage of Islamic ornamental art.

Abstract

The construction industry is facing increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices due to environmental concerns and resource depletion. This study investigates the use of textile waste as a reinforcing material combined with a resin matrix to develop environmentally friendly roster blocks for building construction applications. In Indonesia, textile waste production has reached critical levels, with approximately 2.3 million tons generated annually and projected to increase to 3.9 million tons by 2030, unless interventions to promote a circular economy are implemented. This study focuses on transforming post-industrial textile waste into valuable composite materials that can serve as sustainable construction alternatives to conventional building materials. Through comprehensive material characterization and performance evaluation, this research aims to demonstrate the viability of textile waste and resin composites as viable construction materials while addressing waste management challenges and sustainable building requirements. The developed composites exhibit promising mechanical properties with potential applications in non-load-bearing structural elements and architectural features.

Abstract

Incremental housing emerges as one of the strategies adopted by communities in informal settlements. Incremental housing develops gradually over time, influenced by increasing household needs and adjusted to residents’ capacity to access adequate housing. This study examines incremental housing from a housing-as-a-process perspective within an informal settlement located in Sleman, Yogyakarta. A qualitative research approach is employed by analyzing physical transformations occurring in dwellings and examining the relationship between spatial aspects and economic capacity, which emerges as a key factor in informal settlements.  Out of 36 buildings identified within the study area, five incremental housing units were selected as case studies. The analysis refers to the concept of housing as a process proposed by Turner and the theory of housing transformation articulated by Habraken. The findings indicate that the housing process is predominantly characterized by transformational forms in the form of horizontal and vertical additions, along with elimination in certain cases. The study also reveals the integration of economic activities within residential spaces. Overall, economic capacity is found to be the primary factor controlling the housing process in the cases examined.
