Abstract

Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) has been recognized as an effective pedagogical approach that integrates students’ cultural backgrounds into the learning process, yet limited research in Indonesia has examined English teachers’ perceptions of CRT through a linguistic lens. This study explores how junior high school English teachers in Klaten perceive and discursively construct CRT in their classrooms. Employing a qualitative design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six English teachers of diverse backgrounds, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, focusing both on thematic content and linguistic markers such as lexical choices, metaphors, and stance-taking. The findings reveal three patterns of teachers’ understanding: some framed CRT as a teaching method, others as a broader educational approach, while one admitted unfamiliarity with the concept. These perceptions were linguistically constructed through markers of uncertainty (e.g., interrogatives, hedges), evaluative and metaphorical language (e.g., “learning asset”), and stance-taking devices that reflected confidence or hesitation. In implementation, teachers integrated CRT through project-based learning, local cultural narratives, and school routines, though coherence varied depending on their conceptual grounding. Obstacles included limited teacher competence, insufficient facilities, students’ cultural identity resistance to English, and low self-confidence, while strategies involved professional development, use of technology, relationship building, and material adaptation. The study concludes that teachers’ discourse both reflects and shapes their engagement with CRT, and that without strong theoretical foundations, practices risk remaining intuitive rather than systematic. It recommends strengthening professional development programs to combine theoretical understanding and practical strategies, thereby supporting more inclusive and culturally grounded English language teaching in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study applied the Technology Acceptance Modes (TAM)framework to investigates university EFL students' acceptance of DeepL machine translation tool, focusing on how frequency of use influences their perceptions. A descriptive qualitative approach was used involving purposive sampling of four students in semi-structured interviews. A short questionnaire was administered beforehand to classify participants into two categories, two frequent and two infrequent DeepL users. of the machine translation tool DeepL in the context of learning English as Foreign Language (EFL), involving four participants (two frequent users and two infrequent users). The results showed that frequent users found DeepL valuable for vocabulary acquisition, translation accuracy, and academic writing support, whereas infrequent users highlighted limitations such as the lack of a paraphrasing feature and issues with formality. These differences suggest that usage frequency significantly impacts perceived usefulness and ease of use of the tool. This study is among the first to extend the TAM framework to a machine translation tool like DeepL, addressing a gap in MT research by examining the role of usage frequency. The findings offer both theoretical and practical significance, providing insights into how MT tools can be more effectively integrated into EFL learning.

Abstract

This study examines the forms of resistance by female characters against patriarchal culture in the television series Sh?gun (2024). The study highlights how feudal Japanese society shaped gender roles, and how Lady Mariko, as the main female protagonist, negotiated her agency within a strong patriarchal system. Using Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism theory and Sylvia Walby's concept of patriarchy, this research analyzes intellectualism, self-sacrifice, and strategic compliance as means of subverting social norms. Through qualitative methods involving in-depth understanding and character analysis, this study identifies that Mariko's form of resistance manifests through measured actions against social expectations, codes of honor, and gender-based power hierarchies. The findings show that instead of engaging in open rebellion, Mariko demonstrates agency through symbolic intelligence and self-sacrifice as a challenge to male dominance. This research also highlights how the series reconstructs historical narratives by placing women's inner strength and intelligence at the center of political and cultural stories. This study contributes to feminist criticism of popular media by showing that contemporary historical dramas can present representations of women's resistance within patriarchal systems and reimagine women's positions as active agents in male-dominated history. This research reinforces the ongoing discourse on gender, power, and representation in popular culture, emphasizing that agency within oppressive systems often emerges through subtle, complex, and contextually bound forms of resistance.

Abstract

Drawing on the appraisal theory framework developed by Martin and White (2005), this study examines Tempo's attitudinal stance.co toward the Free Nutritious Meals Program (Program Makan Bergizi Gratis) implemented by the Indonesian government in 2025. The results show that a total of 63 attitudinal resources were identified, with appreciation being the most frequent (43%), followed by judgement (40%) and affect (17%). Negative attitudes account for 74% of the data, indicating a predominantly negative stance. These criticisms are explicitly conveyed and focus on operational issues such as food quality, safety concerns, limited menu variation, unequal distribution, and perceived weaknesses in government management. Positive attitudes (26%) are less frequent and focus mainly on the program’s intended goals, such as improving children’s nutrition and supporting local food industries, rather than its actual implementation. These findings indicate that Tempo.co tends to adopt a negative stance toward the program’s implementation, primarily expressed through explicit evaluations of its shortcomings, while offering limited recognition to its broader policy objectives

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the internal conflict experienced by the main character in the children's literature work “Pinkalicious” by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann. Furthermore, this study also analyzes the self-defense mechanisms, specifically denial and rationalization attitudes, of the main character, Pinkalicious, when facing problems through the lens of Sigmund Freud's psychological personality theory. Then, the research method employed in this study is a descriptive qualitative approach. The data obtained in this study came from the short story “Pinkalicious” by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann, in the form of quotations and dialogues, which reveal the personality structure of the main character, Pinkalicious. Regarding the results of this study, the Id and Ego structures control the Pinkalicious character's attitude in everyday life. However, the superego can reduce the attitudes of the id and ego, which makes Pinkalicious a little loosened. As a result, the form of self-defense mechanisms carried out by the main character, Pinkalicious, only focuses on denial and rationalization. Therefore, this greatly influences the personality of the main character, Pinkalicious, in terms of decision-making.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Bangka Island’s folklore as an element of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in shaping, promoting, and sustaining local tourist destinations. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research integrates semi-structured interviews, field observations, and document analysis conducted across three folklore-associated sites: Batu Rusa, Dempu Awang, and Pantai Penyusuk. Narrative mapping and thematic analysis reveal that each site presents varying degrees of narrative richness and cultural embodiment. Batu Rusa demonstrates the strongest integration of folklore into cultural practices, featuring layered narratives, rituals, and community traditions that reinforce place identity. Dempu Awang, anchored by a single hero legend, shows strong symbolic potential but limited cultural activation, while Penyusuk Beach offers a thin narrative layer overshadowed by its natural scenic appeal. The findings indicate that folklore enhances destination identity, deepens visitor engagement, and serves as cultural capital for tourism development. However, institutional utilization remains limited due to the absence of structured storytelling programs and interpretive tourism infrastructure. This study concludes that Bangka Island holds significant potential for literary and folklore-based tourism, and greater integration of ICH within tourism planning could strengthen cultural preservation and support sustainable destination development.
