Abstract

This study analyzed politeness and impoliteness strategies in the British sitcom Mind Your Language (1977), focusing on cross-cultural interactions within a multilingual classroom. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory and Culpeper’s (2005) impoliteness framework, the research examined 13 episodes to identify how characters employed language strategies to maintain social harmony or assert dominance. The findings revealed that positive politeness was the most frequently used strategy, fostering group cohesion, while bald-on-record impoliteness occurred in authority-asserting situations. This study highlights the role of humor in shaping perceptions of politeness and impoliteness and demonstrates how cultural diversity influences communication styles. These insights contribute to the understanding of cross-cultural pragmatics and are valuable for linguists, educators, and media analysts. The research underscores the necessity of cultural awareness in multilingual interactions, suggesting implications for language teaching and intercultural competence development.

Abstract

This study examines how students and teachers communicate in English classes, with a particular emphasis on implicature and deixis usage and its impact on students' comprehension. Analyzing the effects of implicature and deixis on student interaction and comprehension is the aim of this study. Data were collected at SMKN 9 Bandung through interviews, audio recordings, and observations using a qualitative methodology. The results of the analysis demonstrated that the use of deixis including person, spatial, and temporal deixis created an interactive environment that encouraged student participation. Additionally, the teacher's use of implicature in open-ended questions prompted critical thinking and active participation from the students This study identifies the challenges students face in understanding hidden meanings and the social context that influences language use. The findings suggest that building a strong relationship between teachers and students is just as important for effective classroom communication as simply dispensing knowledge. Therefore, understanding implicature and deixis helps students become better communicators.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of religious extremism on youth identity formation in Jeff Zentner’s novel The Serpent King, focusing on the character Dill who endures psychological conflict due to doctrinal imposition. The aim is to analyse how Dill’s identity evolves in response to trauma and how subcultural elements, particularly music and peer influence, shape his self-reconstruction. Using a qualitative literary approach rooted in sociocultural literary criticism, the study applies thematic analysis on Dill’s narrative progression, drawing from psychological theory (Erikson, Marcia) and sociological perspectives on subculture and trauma (Granqvist & Hagekull, Weinstein). This approach highlights the interplay between religious ideology, youth agency, and cultural resistance. Results indicate that Dill’s religious trauma, coupled with musical subculture and peer relationships, catalyses a resistance identity characterized by self-authorship and resilience. Literature provides a unique framework for understanding such transformation. This study affirms the significance of literature as a medium to examine adolescent identity under ideological pressure, offering insight into resistance, trauma recovery, and the power of interpersonal connection

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between language and identity within the Tobelo Dalam tribe, a semi-nomadic and socially marginalized community in North Halmahera, Indonesia. This research uses qualitative content analysis of ethnographic and linguistic literature to trace the beginnings of the Tobelo Dalam language and investigate its divergence from standard Tobelo. Essential findings indicate notable phonological, morphological, and syntactic differences alongside preserved archaic Austronesian vocabulary, implying linguistic independence influenced by ecological seclusion and oral customs. Concurrently, common grammatical characteristics and ethnobotanical lexicon corroborate cultural and linguistic continuity. These dynamics underscore a dual process of distinction and convergence that defines the group's evolving identity. The research determines that Tobelo Dalam should be considered a unique language and cultural entity. It promotes the immediate implementation of micro-level documentation and inclusive language policies that honour Indigenous self-determination. The results enhance discussions on language endangerment, cultural resilience, and the necessity for decolonial approaches in linguistic anthropology.

Abstract

This research addresses the persistent difficulties students face in developing story ideas, creating interesting plots, describing characters and settings, and composing well-structured sentences. Consequently, these pose learning obstacles in Indonesian short story writing. Although innovative learning methods and technology have been implemented, the fundamental challenge lies in students' abilities to organize ideas logically and structurally in the writing process. This condition is reinforced by the results of the PISA study which indicates that Indonesian students' writing literacy skills are still below the OECD average, indicating the need for a learning approach that focuses not only on linguistic aspects, but also on developing students' cognitive abilities in solving problems and thinking in a structured manner. Computational Thinking (CT) is presented as a potential solution, to be implemented in the story outlining process by breaking down the complex story ideas into smaller parts (decomposition), identifying patterns in narratives (pattern recognition), focusing on important elements (abstraction), and designing structured writing steps (algorithm). This study aims to develop CT-based short story writing skills in elementary school students, hoping to facilitate their systematic application of CT components in the writing process. The Research and Development (R&D) method used in this study comprises the following stages: problem identification, initial data collection, product design, expert validation, design revision, limited trials, product revision, classroom usage trials, final product revision, and dissemination. This study involves 5th grade students of Cita Hati Christian Elementary School. Data were collected through observation, the rubric used for assessing outlines and short stories (in Flipbook format), and student-survey responses after the learning activity. The results of the study showed that the integration of CT in learning materials and the short story writing process had a positive impact on students’ ability to produce more structured and creative writing. Students demonstrated improved short story writing abilities and responded positively to the CT approach in Indonesian language learning. Thus, the development of CT-based learning materials has effectively empowered students to think logically and systematically when planning, composing, and developing their short stories

Abstract

People are destined to live with pressures, and some deal with them by conducting paradoxes to survive. However, consciously or unconsciously people construct and conduct paradoxes to live. Paradox is a contradiction of two things. Winston Smith, has to run paradoxical life for the sake of surviving the pressures in Orwell’s 1984. This study examines the causes and reasons of Winston Smith committing paradoxes and the ways he applies his paradoxes to disclose his survivals against lethal pressures and compelling inner conflicts. Applying Roy Sorensen's paradox theory, supported with discourse study, within a qualitative method of study, this research analyzes the paradoxical realm of Winston Smith in his surviving the pressures. The result shows that Winston Smith conducts three kinds of paradoxes, i.e., the paradox of thoughts, the paradox of action, and the combination of the two paradoxes that contains how Winston's thoughts and actions are contradictory. It is a must for him to take the three kinds of paradoxes to survive the pressures and achieve his desires, yet, consequently, he has to experience inner conflicts

Abstract

This research analyzes lexical cohesion in Prabowo Subianto's presidential speech at Al-Azhar University Cairo in December 2024. By using descriptive qualitative method, this research aims to identify and analyze the types of lexical cohesion applied, including repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, collocation, and equivalence. The data of this research comes from the transcription of speeches uploaded through the YouTube channel Kompas.com. The analysis shows that repetition is the most dominant type of lexical cohesion used. Out of 78 data, repetition is found as much as 50 data, synonymy 3 data, antonymy 3 data, hyponymy 1 data, collocation 13 data, and equivalence 8 data. The dominant use of repetition reflects President Prabowo's efforts to strengthen his message and ensure the listeners' deep understanding. The key points in the repetition reflect the fundamental principles and identity of the Indonesian nation in the context of international relations, including mutual respect, rejection of hostility, and the essence of inclusive cooperation regardless of differences in order to realize unity and prosperity. This study concludes that lexical cohesion plays a significant role in building discourse cohesion and clarifying meaning in President Prabowo's speech. The careful selection of words based on semantic relationships contributes to the effective delivery of the message and the meaning of the speech.

Abstract

This study describes the obsessive love of the main character as seen in the novel Cry, or Better Yet, Beg by Solche. It aims to determine the characteristics of obsessive love experienced by Matthias Von Henhardt as the obsessor and the negative impacts of obsessive love on Layla Llewellyn as the target of obsessive love. The method of collecting data in this research is library research, and the method of analyzing data is descriptive qualitative. The research focuses on a psychological approach. Susan Forward and Craig Buck’s theory was employed to identify the characteristics of obsessive love, while Belton and Bailey's theory was also applied to identify the negative impacts of obsessive love. The results show that the characteristics of obsessive love in the novel are one magic person, rejection, revenge, and the savior complex. Additionally, the negative impacts of obsessive love are stalking and domestic violence. Domestic violence happens in the form of physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, and sexual abuse. These results improve understanding of how obsessive love can turn into a toxic relationship as portrayed in popular digital literature.

Abstract

This paper examines Alice Walker's literary contributions and activism through intersectional analysis in the novel The Color Purple. As a black female writer born and raised in a racist and patriarchal society, Walker uses her works to explore the oppression based on race, gender, and social class experienced by African-American women. Through the theoretical lens of black feminism and womanism, this paper examines how The Color Purple portrays the transformation of the main character, Celie, from a state of oppression to self-empowerment through female solidarity and economic empowerment. Home and business ownership in the novel become important symbols that mark Celie's social, spiritual, and economic transformation. By presenting the voices of black women who have been marginalized, Walker not only writes literary works but also engages in social criticism and fosters a discourse of intersectional justice. This work demonstrates that literature can serve as a tool of liberation and resistance, as well as a space for articulating the collective experiences of oppressed women. Through this analysis, this paper highlights Alice Walker's significant role in the realm of literature and contemporary feminist thought
