Abstract

In the current digital era, disseminating information via social media is very easy and quick, but this can also increase the spread of wrong and inaccurate information to the public caused by translation errors in automatic translations on social media. The main objectives of this research are 1. Identify the types of translation errors found in Instagram Machine Translation in Translating the Caption of the "NYTimes" Instagram Account. 2. search for the most dominant types of lexical errors made by Instagram Machine Translation in Translating the Caption of "NYTimes" Instagram Account. The theory of error classification by Vilar et al. (2006) is applied to identify three main types of errors: unknown words, missing words, and incorrect words. The research method involves analyzing 100 translated news captions. There are three types of Lexical Errors found in Instagram machine translation when translating captions from the NYTimes Instagram account (1) Incorrect Word (4 instances, 50%) (2) Omitted or Missing Word (2 instances, 25% (3) Unknown Word (2 instances, 25%). The most common type of error identified in the translations is the use of incorrect words, accounting for half of all errors. This indicates that the machine translation often fails to select the appropriate words to convey the original meaning effectively.

Abstract

This analysis investigated the representation of characters in the cinematic work “Lion.” Used various kinds of politeness strategies. This study aims to analyze the positive and negative politeness strategies used by characters from Australia and India, in addition to determine the factors that shape these strategies. This study applies a qualitative approach. As a result, the conversations in the movie are carefully transcribed and analyzed descriptively through the perspective of politeness theory (Brown, 2020) and s cross-cultural pragmatics (Wierzbicka, 2009) to identify the influence of the characters' cultural backgrounds on their strategic communication choices. The conversations that occur between the Australian and Indian characters in the film serve as a valuable repository of information, that includes both positive and negative politeness strategies. To obtain the data, the researcher uses a few processes, including watching the movie, taking notes, and choosing conversations in which the actors use both positive and negative politeness strategies frequently. The findings of this study reveal that a total of 121 sentences were classified as either negative or positive politeness, with 68 instances identified as negative politeness and 53 as positive politeness strategies. The application of both negative and positive politeness strategies articulated by the characters is primarily influenced by their cultural context.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of andragogical principles in higher education, with a focus on the context of STAIN SAS Bangka Belitung. Andragogy, as a learner-centered approach, emphasizes the unique needs of adult learners, including self-directed learning, the integration of prior experiences, and the relevance of education to real-world applications. Through a mixed-methods approach, this research evaluates the effectiveness of a professional development program designed to enhance lecturers' understanding and application of andragogical principles. Data were collected through pre- and post-training assessments, student evaluations, and interviews with lecturers. The findings reveal a significant improvement in lecturers' knowledge of andragogy, with post-test scores increasing by 23.9% compared to pre-test results. Student evaluations further indicated that lecturers effectively applied andragogical principles, particularly in understanding learners' self-concept and fostering a learner-centered environment. However, challenges were identified in integrating students' prior experiences and aligning course content with andragogical principles. Barriers such as insufficient lecturer innovation, inadequate learning facilities, and students' pragmatic orientations were also noted. Conversely, enablers such as institutional support, training opportunities, and student motivation facilitated the successful adoption of andragogical practices. The study underscores the importance of continuous professional development and institutional support in promoting andragogical approaches in higher education. Recommendations include revising curricula to better reflect andragogical principles, investing in modern learning facilities, and fostering a culture of innovation among lecturers. Future research should explore the long-term impact of andragogical training on teaching practices and student outcomes, as well as the role of institutional policies in sustaining these practices. By addressing these challenges and leveraging existing enablers, institutions like STAIN SAS Bangka Belitung can create more effective and engaging learning environments for adult learners, ultimately enhancing the quality of higher education.

Abstract

This investigation scrutinizes linguistic and non-linguistic modes, through a multimodal discourse analysis, on the English textbook, entitled “Bahasa Inggris English for Change” (2022). This research delves into how social and cultural values applied in the English textbook have fulfilled the vision of the Indonesian education curriculum, which is to create Pancasila students (pelajar Pancasila), and also to appraise social and cultural components introduced in the textbook. The observed data are collected by using documentation technique and purposive sampling. Four analysis stages, involving a verbal analysis, visual analysis, spatial analysis, and gesture analysis, are carried out. The findings indicate that the English learning textbook strongly emphasizes local social and cultural principles, especially in its visuals. Furthermore, the literary texts and visual images in the English textbook have not been able to reflect the values of Pancasila specifically. The findings suggest Indonesian English teachers creatively strengthen the Pancasila values and global knowledge to learners through assignments outside the materials in the textbook.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perspectives of foreign media over the issue of political dynasty issue at the last presidential election in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative approach. The data used is news from South China Morning Post titled “Nepotism May Win Indonesia’s 2024 Election”. To analyze the political text, two theories were applied. They are appraisal theory (Martin & White, 2005) focusing on the affect as part of the attitude aspect, and the ideological square concept (van Dijk, 2006). Based on the analysis, the findings showed that the reporter felt anxious (insecurity as a part of affect) about Joko Widodo leading through political dynasties, because this could hurt Indonesia. To show his negative view, the reporter emphasizes negative points about "them" (Jokowi and his party). In contrary, The post editor felt secure (security as a part of affect) in Jokowi, despite political dynasties based on his past success and popularity. However, he still emphasized the negative sides of political dynasties, even though he liked Jokowi. Meanwhile, the Indonesian analyst felt fear (disinclination as a part of affect). He worried that political dynasties would damage trust and may cause a long-term chaos. Thus, he emphasized the negative of Joko's strategies, not his qualities.

Abstract

Loss is a universal experience, yet its interpretation varies across cultures. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of the meaning of loss in Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “One Art” (1976) and Kurniawan Junaedhie’s poem “Tak Ada Yang Hilang” (2009) using Jacques Derrida’s perspective of deconstruction. This study explores how these poems reflect and deconstruct the meaning of loss through logocentrism, binary opposition, and difference. The findings indicate that while Bishop presents loss as an art to be mastered, reflecting Western pragmatism and individualism, Junaedhie portrays loss as a transformation rather than an absence, rooted in Eastern perspectives on continuity and presence. This research contributes to the field of comparative literature and poetry analysis by highlighting the cultural and philosophical dimensions of loss.

Abstract

This paper?uses Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's literary Romanticism to analyze traits of Romanticism in Mahmoud Darwish's "Ilaa Ummi." It examines how aspects of Goethean Romanticism?including emotional expression, attitude toward nature, and spiritual importance are present in the poem. The research identifies a knowledge gap in literary studies by analyzing Goethean Romanticism in a contemporary Arabic literature context, which has been looked at through a political or?identity lens, and not a Romantic one. Through close reading and thematic analysis, the study uses a descriptive qualitative method to explore how certain hallmarks of Goethean Romanticism, such as subjectivity,?reverence for nature, and quest for spiritual meaning, can be found in Darwish's oeuvre. The findings highlight three major categories: (1)?pathos, represented by mother-longing and love for the mother, (2) the human-nature relationship, where landscapes denote warmth and emotional bond, and (3) deeper spiritual embodiment, which articulates existential contemplation and personal identity exploration. In a way, by tracing the tints and?shades of Darwish’s oeuvre, the work attends to the reductiveness of denoting the poet as “postmodern” (which had fallen out of fashion by the time he had died) and highlights Goethean Romantic elements to his literary agenda, bridging disparate Eastern and Western traditions. The study sheds light on the relevance of?Goethean Romanticism in non-Western poetry and advances the research into intertextual connections between Eastern and Western literatures.

Abstract

This study focuses on how the people of Pasuruan City apply the values of Javanese pitutur in appreciating the morning and evening as integral parts of daily life. Pitutur Jawa, as a form of local wisdom, not only serves as a moral guide but also influences the habits and behavioral patterns of the community. To understand how the meanings embedded in these pitutur are applied in real life, this research employs a hypersemiotics approach, allowing for an in-depth exploration of signs and symbols within the culture of Pasuruan society. The use of hypersemiotics in this study aims to uncover the meanings behind pitutur expressions related to morning and evening time. By utilizing qualitative methods and descriptive analysis, this research collects data through direct observation and interviews with local communities, including cultural figures and residents who uphold the tradition of Javanese pitutur. The collected data is then analyzed to reveal how the people of Pasuruan City interpret and implement these pitutur values in their lives. The findings indicate that the people of Pasuruan City have a deep understanding of the significance of morning and evening in their daily lives. The morning is perceived as a time to be utilized for productivity and discipline. They believe that the morning is the best time to start work with enthusiasm, as reflected in the pitutur "Esuk-esuk kudu sregep", which teaches the importance of hard work early in the day. Meanwhile, the evening is seen as a time for rest, gathering with family, and reflecting on the activities carried out throughout the day. This value aligns with pitutur such as "Sore-sore ojo dolanan, mundhak kesambet", which emphasizes the importance of tranquility and introspection. Thus, this study demonstrates that despite the continuous advancement of modernization, the traditional values embedded in Javanese pitutur remain relevant and are still practiced by the people of Pasuruan City in maintaining a balanced life.
