Abstract

This study explores the relationship between language and culture through the traditional art form of ebeg in Kebumen Regency which functions as a vital expression of local identity and values. This study aims to (1) classify the lexicon used in ebeg based on lexical and cultural meanings, and (2) reveal the local wisdom contained in the performance. Using qualitative descriptive methods within an ethnographic framework, data were collected through observation and interviews with community elders, studio leaders, and ebeg players. The research findings reveal various lexicons related to ebeg which are categorized according to elements such as uborampe (ritual offerings), dance movements, tembang (traditional songs), and performance attributes (sandhangan). Furthermore, this study highlights the philosophical and moral values ??conveyed through these linguistic and cultural expressions which underline the role of ebeg in preserving Kebumen's local heritage

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the coin jagat game phenomenon on the social life of Indonesian society using the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The study focuses on the narrative related to the phenomenon of Koin Jagat and the response given by the government. The urgency of this research lies in understanding the impact of digital technology on social behavior, including in education involving students. According to Van Dijk’s theory, media language has an important role in shaping public opinion. The phenomenon resulting from the existence of the Koin Jagat game is the cause of the destruction of public facilities and disruption of social order. By understanding the phenomenon, educational institutions can develop a better digital literacy curriculum. This research uses a qualitative approach with a text analysis method sourced from national media online news data. The data collected is analyzed using Van Dijk’s theory which includes analysis of the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure of the text.

Abstract

This study investigates the slang terminologies use, especially 'slay', in the Western and Indonesian TikTok spheres in relation to socio-pragmatic analysis. The objective of the study is to focus on the pathways in which English words undergo changes with the passage of time and how English slang words and phrases are interpreted in the context of contemporary language, the evolution of slang terms such as 'slay' and its differing meanings between Western and Indonesian TikTok users. The study is based on socio-pragmatic theory and semantic change theory to examine how slang is used in contemporary discourse in relation to time and space, multicultural contexts, and adaptation. A qualitative approach, with particular emphasis on content analysis, is employed to identify these aspects. The TikTok creators' posts were the source of the comments and captions used for data collection. The methodology for data analysis applied to TikTok data was systematic including the identification of slang words and explaining them. TikTok users from the West and Indonesia diverge sharply in their understanding of ‘slay’. In Western TikTok, ‘slay’ is a compliment and a form of admiration, whereas in Indonesian TikTok, ‘slay’ is mostly used derisively to mock guys for being feminized and for being gay. This study showcases the extent to which English slang words can create a misunderstanding and misused across the world and with different languages.

Abstract

This study is purposed to reveal cultural displacement and diaspora in Saeed Teebi’s short story, Woodland. This story tells about an Algerian diaspora, Noor, and her experiences for being uprooted from her native country. Noor's experiences exemplify the complicated of mental and physical upheaval which also illustrate the long-lasting effects of relocation on personal identity. Her observations provide insights into the difficulties experienced by people of the diaspora as she makes her way through life in a new cultural setting. This study applies a concept of diaspora by Stuart Hall focusing on cultural displacement experienced by diaspora. This displacement relates to identity construction due to the process of leaving the homeland. Furthermore, a content analysis method is applied in this study. The result of the study shows that Teebi's exploration of Noor's journey sheds light on the diverse dimensions of displacement, providing a nuanced understanding of the diaspora experience. Through Noor's narrative, the study contributes to the broader discussion on the complex nature of identity, belonging, and the persistent echoes of one's homeland in the lives of diaspora individuals.

Abstract

This research examines how the animated film Moana (2016) by Disney illustrates the concept of empowered femininity through a liberal feminist lens, particularly drawing on Betty Friedan’s theoretical framework. The study analyzes how Moana, as the central character, challenges conventional portrayals of women in media by embodying traits such as independence, leadership, and emotional strength. Using qualitative content analysis, the research identifies Moana’s narrative as a departure from traditional Disney princess tropes, highlighting her journey as one driven by self-determination rather than romantic or male-driven motives. Moana stands out as a proactive and capable figure who redefines what it means to be a female hero in popular culture. Her role as a decision-maker and voyager showcases a shift in gender representations, aligning with liberal feminist ideals that emphasize equal opportunity, personal agency, and the rejection of limiting gender roles. The study also considers how supporting characters and the storyline reinforce these themes, painting a fuller picture of feminine empowerment. Ultimately, the film serves as an example of evolving gender narratives in children's media, presenting a progressive image of femininity that aligns with the goals of liberal feminism.

Abstract

This study explores the differences and similarities in language comprehension and expressive abilities among children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). While the two disorders impact speech and language, their causes are rather different; CP results from motor impairment, while DLD results from impaired language processing. Through the use of a qualitative case study, two children, one with CP and the other with DLD, are used to examine their communication strategies, speech production, and language output. Data were collected through video observation of fluency, articulation, syntax, and coherence. The study indicates that a child with CP shows primarily expressive language impairment due to motor constraints, with well-maintained grammar and strong receptive capabilities despite slurred and late speech. Conversely, a child with DLD speech is fluent but disorganized, with pervasive grammatical errors and lexical difficulties, suggesting linguistic planning instead of motor impairments. Therapies, therefore, differ: CP therapy focuses on motor-based strategies like articulation and regulation of breathing, while DLD therapy targets the facilitation of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence formation by language-based activities like role play and storytelling. The study emphasizes the importance of tailored intervention, noting that therapy must be tailored to each child's unique language profile. It also emphasizes the relationship between language and Theory of Mind (ToM), suggesting that therapy for both conditions includes scope for the expression of thoughts and feelings. These findings shape a better view of speech-language disorders, improving diagnostic methods and treatment interventions for children with CP and DLD.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the mental health issues of Quinn, the main character in the picture book My Quiet Ship (2018) by Hallee Adelman. Quinn’s various traumatic experiences are analyzed through Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic stages: the real, the imaginary, and the symbolic. A descriptive qualitative method with a psychoanalytic approach is employed. The primary data consist of narrative and visual elements from the book. Findings reveal that the real phase is reflected in Quinn’s trauma caused by his parents’ quarrels. His creation of an imaginary world illustrates the imaginary phase, where he builds a sense of safety and comfort through fantasy. The symbolic phase emerges as Quinn begins to express his fears to his parents. Moreover, the quiet ship in Quinn’s imagination functions as an objet petit a, symbolizing lost security and inner peace. This study confirms that My Quiet Ship not only portrays children’s traumatic experiences but also highlights the crucial role of imagination ang language in identity formation in line with Lacanian theory.

Abstract

This study investigates how Lee Isaac Chung’s film Minari (2020) represents cultural hybridity and diasporic identity negotiation within a Korean-American immigrant family in Arkansas. Using hybridity and diaspora theoretical frameworks, this research addresses how Yi family balances preservation of Korean cultural heritage with adaptation to American societal norms. Through semiotic and narrative analysis, the study finds that Minari portrays hybrid identity formation as a dynamic and intergenerational process characterized by both cultural retention and adaptation. It reveals familial conflicts and solidarities that highlight differing aspirations-such as Jacob’s pursuit of the American Drea, balanced against the family’s Korean heritage, and Monica’s emphasis on familial cohesion. The diaspora community emerges as a crucial space for articulating multifaceted identities and supporting resilience amid economic and social challenges. These findings illustrate how Minari critically engages with immigrant experiences, offering nuanced insight into identity negotiation beyond assimilation paradigm.

Abstract

This study uses genetic structuralism Lucien Goldmann's theory as a sociological framework. It aims to understand how class inequality is symbolically depicted through the characters' behavior and how shifting material conditions affect ideological transformation. Using a qualitative research design, this study conducted a careful textual analysis of the narrative, identifying ideological contradictions through a class-based worldview. This results show that the rich man and the monkey serve as symbolic representations of the oppressed class and the elite class, respectively. The monkey's initial plea highlights the structural exclusion of the lower class, while the rich man's moral crisis reflects contradictions in bourgeois consciousness. However, upon receiving the rich man's wealth, the monkey quickly adopts the attitudes and behaviors of the former elite, showing that material change alone does not guarantee ideological progress. The narrative reveals a cyclical pattern in which oppression is reproduced under new identities, confirming that without a transformation in collective consciousness, instead of erasing inequality, class mobility entrenches the existing hierarchical system. This study concludes that The Rich Man and The Monkey is more than a moral tale; it is a critical reflection on the persistence of class ideology
