Abstract

Poverty has been continuously seen as a critical global challenge issue faced by many countries across the continents. As one of the main goals of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), strategies to overcome poverty have become interesting topics in discussions on both a global and national scale. In Indonesia, the issue of poverty alleviation still occupies the national development priority. Interestingly, the government agendas for combating poverty now include a plan to incorporate the role of social capital. This raises a question of how social capital might help in the agenda of alleviating poverty that has been dominantly seen as a structural issue? This study aimed to examine the condition of social capital in Indonesia according to the dimensions and areas of residence, and the effect of social capital on household poverty in Indonesia. Using the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) data of September 2018, this study was analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The study showed that the households’ social capital in rural areas was higher than households in urban areas. The dimension of collective action was the strongest dimension in Indonesia’s social life, both in rural and urban, which was then followed by the dimensions of trust and tolerance as well as groups and networks. Binary logistic regression analysis found that social capital had a significant negative effect on household poverty. Control variables such as areas of residence, household head’s gender, household head's marital status, number of household members, household head’s age, household head's education level, and household head’s main occupation also affected household poverty.

Abstract

The struggle by indigenous people to protect their land from capitalist expansion is often reduced by scholars to two contrasting models: class politics and identity politics. This reduction has partially come from how scholars separate between the cultural/spiritual and the political-economic dimensions of these struggles, which are often more complex in reality. Based on an empirical study of the Sedulur Sikep movement in Pati, Central Java, the purpose of this article is to understand what the indigenous politics of justice looks like in practice as they defend their land and way of life against the cement mining industry. This study uses a qualitative approach combining four months of field observations with two Wong Sikep households and interviews with 20 Wong Sikep individuals from 15 households in Baturejo Sukolilo Village, Pati Regency, Central Java. This article discusses two findings from the study. First, the cultural/spiritual and political-economic dimensions are inseparable in the lives of Wong Sikep. Such inseparability is manifested through the agricultural system as the core of Wong Sikep life, derived from the teachings of their ancestors (culture/spirituality) as well as their practical needs (political economy). Second, this inseparability forms the basis of their adoption of both the politics of recognition and redistribution in their resistance to cement mining. The article concludes with recommendations for future studies about the Sedulur Sikep movement in particular and for indigenous justice movements more broadly.

Abstract

The artistic contestation between choral culture and folk song is an important concern in the study of musicology. The problem that is of concern in this study focuses on singing behavior in singing hybrid vocal music. Choir singing behavior has standard vocal techniques, on the other hand the context of understanding folk songs includes natural singing expressions from an ethnicity without being overshadowed by good vocal techniques. The study aims to reconstruct the practice of artistic requirements in Indonesian folksong choir competitions. The study is important because there is artistic contestation between choir culture and folk songs culture leading to a good hybrid performance in the Folklore category. This research method takes material from singing events through observations and studies of audio-visual documentation that are observed repeatedly. This study uses a performance centered approach study that concentrates on the choir's performance. Descriptive-analytic analysis is used as a consequence of the material of the event‘s  that relies on careful descriptions. The results of this study indicate, firstly the choirs which sang folk song repertoire are a hybrid performance characteristic.  Second, the relationship that occurs between artistic requirement and the reality of performances on stage occurs in a multidimensional manner. It was found that there was an adjustment to standardization in the perspective of the coral setting. Third, an understanding of the performance practice as multidimentional and hybrid with artistic requirements shows that a small portion is given to other dimensions (kinesthetic & visual). The findings can be used to reformulate artistic requirements entailing a bigger cultural aspect of folk songs.

Abstract

This study aims at determining the conditions and characteristics of shrimp waste, the economic value of the potential for shrimp waste, as well as the policy direction for implementing the Circular Economy of Shrimp Waste as a Green Economy Alternative in the Bulak Banteng Kenjeran Coastal Area, Surabaya City. The research method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative with the process hierarchy analysis technique (AHP). The data collection method was carried out by distributing questionnaires and in-depth interviews with selected respondents. The results showed that the characteristics of shrimp waste in the form of shrimp heads and shells were still not used for economic value activities, and people dumped them in gutters around homes and at sea. The priority policy directions that can be applied to the Circular Economy of Shrimp Waste as an Alternative to a Green Economy are; 1) providing innovation and technology for economic-based shrimp waste processing with a total CR (consistency ratio) value of 1.878; 2) to improve environmental health by not disposing of shrimp waste around the house, the total value of CR is 1.127; and, 3) the government provides a shrimp processing industry for fishermen with a total CR value of 0.094. Each policy priority can be carried out in synergy so that shrimp waste can be handled properly.

Abstract

Queer as a gender identity draws varying responses globally. In French the representation of Queer in various social media has raised a number of public’s perceptions, both in positive and negative manners. This perception does not only concern about French linguistic issues, but also its socio-cultural issues. This study puts an emphasis on the widely-used speech patterns showing the public perception on both French queer and immigrant queers posted on French social media. Further, it also examines the socio-cultural context that influences the social contact and relation between the public and the phenomenon of Queer as a subject in social media. This study uses interactionist approach and gender-based critical discourse analysis based on the theory of interpersonal contact between groups proposed by Gordon Allport. In explaining the phenomenon, the researcher employs qualitative content analysis and uses criticial discourse analysis and gender-based criticism. The data are collected from both French and immigrant queers’ posts on social media in 2020. The results show that French queers are perceived to have equal standing position with other French people as they are considered as a part of French society. The result also shows that unlike French queer, the immigrant-descent queer are considered to have inequal position with French society due to the immigrant’s negative stereotype as the trigger of social problems in France.

Abstract

Indonesia has greatly affected by COVID-19 outbreak. This study shows that health crisis during COVID-19 pandemic has caused the rise of new poor seen from the increase of poverty rates, both at the national, regional, and local levels. The increase in poverty occurred in all provinces which is associated with the magnitude of pandemic. In this study, we highlight poverty in the provinces of Java-Bali region as the most affected areas of the outbreak. Among the 128 regencies/cities, the six top highest increase in poverty are regencies/cities that located in small islands and coastal regions. The highest increase was experienced by Kepulauan Seribu by 2,78% of increase. This follows by increase in Sampang Regency (2,07%), North Jakarta (1,74%), Bangkalan Regency (1,66%), and Indramayu Regency (1,59%) respectively. This study shows that the uncertainty in the time of COVID-19 has made precarity among productive working groups. Migrant workers especially in urban areas are more vulnerable due to ‘lockdown’ policies. In addition, we also found that poverty in small islands and coastal cities are severely affected. Further research needs to be done to elaborate this finding to anticipate poverty in Indonesia in the future when the uncertainty of COVID-19 continues to this day.
