Abstract

It has been commonly understood that tourism development in rural areas can generate a unique dynamic in the social life of the village communities. This includes a recognition of the collective and cohesive village communities. The significance of socio-cultural factors in tourism is reflected in many villages in Yogyakarta. Taking a case study in Tanjung village as a rural tourism destination in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, this study investigated the social and cultural impacts of rural tourism development on the host community. By using a qualitative method, the data in this study came from in-depth interviews with the head of village tourism management and village residents, focus group discussions, and field observations. As the result, this study found that rural tourism has brought a positive impact on community involvement and empowerment, including women. In addition, the host-visitor interactions are positive but superficial. From the cultural aspect, tourism has played an important role in the preservation of local culture and arts. Several local art performances and traditions have been revived due to tourism. However, apart from the positive impacts, the development of rural tourism has generated problems that could turn into conflicts among community members, especially those concerning dualistic tourism management and negative perception over economic benefit distribution.

Abstract

Gender studies have generated a perspective called feminist research that is not merely research on women, but also research for women. Driven by a will to prioritize women’s experiences and, therefore, the aim to emphasize the importance of their subjective experiences, feminist researchers tend to apply qualitative research methods by placing great emphasis on women as subjects of knowledge. The differences in disciplinary backgrounds and the methodological and epistemological positions of feminist are also increasingly blurred by the mutual borrowing of concepts and thoughts across disciplines, especially from literary theory, history, and cultural studies. In cultural studies, with its recent development recently, feminist research tends to be more oriented towards the basic assumptions of poststructuralism and/or postmodernism. They reject the perspective of a monolithic woman so that, therefore, there is no single and unitary truth about the story of woman’s reality. In this regard, culture is an important issue on the academic and political agenda of feminists. Not only is culture inseparable from gender and power factors, but it can also produce a better understanding of subjectivity. By understanding gender specifically as discourse, they do not deny the possibility of female subjectivity that is multiple, fragmented, and open up opportunities for differences and variations. Compared to the other feminist research positions, feminist cultural studies seem more hybrid, radical, and subversive.

Abstract

Understanding determinant factors in community participation is essential in encouraging community participation in tourism activities. However, community participation studies mainly focused on identifying community participation issues and reasons to advocate community participation. This research aims at 1) exploring factors that affect community participation in tourism, and 2) proposing strategies to encourage active participation by the local community. This paper employs a qualitative methodology conducted in 2019. The research reveals that community participation around Dutungan Island has three categories: supportive participation, micro business-based creation participation and passive participation. The determinant factors for community participation include; 1) private management of tourism attraction; 2) lack of collective awareness by the local community, and 3) lack of skills and knowledge in tourism. This paper proposes the importance of implementing communitybased tourism village; strengthening cooperation between the owner or manager of Dutungan Island and the local community; and optimising Dutungan Island management’s role to help the local people who reside the village. Dutungan Island’s manager should be able to share profit to help the local people through social programs that may include training for the local people and providing investment for micro business. This paper provides insight into how to encourage community participation through the role of different stakeholders, including the island and the local community.

Abstract

Rapid development and increasing population density have created challenge for many regions to provide settlement spaces. The demand for settlement requires analysis that can forecast on the availability of space and the growth of settlement. Such a challenge is faced by Manyar sub-district of Gresik regency. Since it became an Economic Strategic District Area in the agroindustry area in Gresik Regency, the demand for settlement at Manyar increased following the 2017 population boom. Manyar is recorded as the third maximum growth in Gresik regency with numbers of 114.056 inhabitant living in 9.542 acre. This study aims to examine the facilities and infrastructure, as well as the availability of residential land in the next 20 years. This study uses quantitative technique that includes projections of settlement demand. Data collection methods takes the form of field observations and surveys of related agencies. The analytical technique utilized was backlog and scalogram study regarding the availability of settlement, facilities and infrastructure support. As the result, this paper found that the population growth rate of Manyar sub-district reaches 0.1% every year. Consequently, the settlement and supporting infrastructures required at the year 2039 increase massively since 2019 consists of housing facilities, education, health facilities, worship facilities, commerce and services facilities, and green open spaces. The land required for the development of the facility is 269.1 acre. Based on the level of need for residential facilities and infrastructure in the next 20 years in Manyar sub-district, further research is needed to anticipate the phenomenon of pond land conversion by maintaining land functions.

Abstract

Various studies have shown the important roles of spatial environment in shaping behavior and cognitive processes. However educational buildings are often not well designed for this specific purpose. This is especially the case with school dormitory for special need schools. The unavailability of school dormitory planning standards has an impact on variations in the building’s diverse physical settings. The daily activities carried out in the dormitory still found the use of one space for several types of activities. This has an impact on the density level, which further requires spatial adaptation that will be implemented by the residents. This study aims to find out spatial adaptation in three different physical settings of special needs school dormitories with the focus of observation being children with intellectual disabilities. The research method is based on a behavior mapping - place centered mapping approach. As the result, this research shows that there are variations in different spatial adaptations in responding to each of the physical setting conditions of the dormitory. The form of spatial adaptation involves changes in the physical setting and behavior, namely adjustment, reaction, and withdrawal. Furthermore, this type of spatial adaptation has different ways in achieving the ideal conditions of activities carried out in the physical setting of the dormitory.

Abstract

A correctional facility has been considered critical not only in accommodating prisoners but also facilitating vocational training that prepares the prisoners to reintegrate in society and thus would not recommit crimes. However, in reality the building of many correctional facilities are not prepared for this function. This is apparent in the correctional facility for women in Yogyakarta. The facility does not have its official building and is located in the men’s correctional facility. Those conditions impact the spatial limitations, including space to conduct the skills development program. This study aims to examine the spatial utilization for the skills development program in Yogyakarta prison for women by analyzing the relationship between the physical settings and the occurring activities there. By conducting place-centered mapping, questionnaire survey, and interview for data collection, this study showed that prisoners tend to seek to carry the vocational work in comfortable areas provided with better air condition that are not prepared for the training. This finding raises a concern about how a correctional facility should have adequate space that encourages social solidarity and provides enough spatial autonomy for the skills development program.
