Abstract

Arabic usually use the word al-usrahor al-‘ailahto refer to family. However, the Qur’an also employs some different words to describe family, namely ahl, ‘asyirah, rahtu, alu, qurbaand ruknu. This article aims to examine the word ahl. This is based on the fact that ahlis the most frequent word mentioned theQur’an to refer to the family. Using the semantic analysis proposed by ‘Aisya bint al-Syati’, this article shows that the original meaning of the word ahlis “entitled”and “appropriate”.Itscontextual meaning, however, might refer to the people of the book (ahl al-Kitab), residents (al-sakin), followers (qawm al-Nabī), people who are entitled or reserve the right(al-mustahaq), the core family (usrah), and clans or extended family (‘ailah). This article contributes to the ideal of building a family. By referring to the meaning of ahl, the family should be correctly and appropriately built so as to achieve happiness.

Abstract

This study aims at rereading  the interpretation of sura (chapter) Al-Fiil with a historical approach. The context of this sura is the incident of the attack of the elephant army led by Abrahah to Makkah. This event coincided with the outbreak of the Justinian Plagueepidemic in Ethiopia. Thus, it is necessary to reread  this surawith consideration to the pandemic. This study concludes that certain terms in the suraAl-Fiil represent the events of the pandemic that caused the destruction of Abrahah’s army. Thayr, ababil, and sijjilbecome key terms whose meaning could refer to the cause, spread, and media of the outbreak contracting Abrahah and his army. In addition, a multidisciplinary approach in the interpretation of sura Al-Fiil can support the argument of the miracles of the Qur’an often attributed to the meaning of this suraby some classical interpreters. Similarly, the evidence for the miracles of the Qur’an resulted from this study might reinforce the existence of tafsir bi al-‘ilm.

Abstract

This article aims to describe and analyze issues related to Islamic moderation in the perspective of Aristotle's ethics. Departing from the phenomenon of Islamic rigidity brought by a group with a one-sided truth claim that is not in line with the essence of Islam as a blessing for the universe. Truth claim contrasts to the concept of moderation in Islam. This article will compare the concept of moderation in Islam to Aristotle’s concept of the ethics of virtue. Thus it is interesting to see the concept of ethics in the context of religious moderation. Applying a descriptive-analysis approach, this article shows that the concept of Islamic moderation has in common with Aristotle's view of virtue. Aristotle views that moderation is a wisdom since it comes from the experience of thinking by combining the two choises until becoming a habit. It is the core argument of this article that tries to position reason and theory as a nature for justice.

Abstract

This article aims to look at the political views of the Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network) in Indonesia. As a community that wants to carry out reforms with the spirit of modernization and rationality in religion, seeing it in political and democratic contestation in Indonesia is interesting. So this article questions two things; how does Jaringan Islam Liberal view the relevance of religion and politics? and how does Jaringan Islam Liberal view the implementation of democracy? The method used in this paper is a literature study that seeks to collect data from journal articles, books, and other related reading materials. This article shows that the Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network) rejects forms of political Islam that try to formally fight for the superiority of Islamic value systems and symbols in the political sphere. They also reject the idea of an Islamic state and the formalization of shari'ah, and sees democracy as a value that must be implemented in a country. This is because it is in accordance with the basic rights that must be owned by individuals, which are known as human rights.

Abstract

The study discusses the shift in the Grajegan community in interpreting the kendurianor kondhangan. Nowadays, fewer Grajegan people practice the kenduriantradition compared to decades ago. This paper explainsthe causative factors in the perspective of religious phenomenology. This is a field research which uses  participatory observation and interviewto collect the data. The data is analysed  using the symbolic interpretationmethod. This research revealsthat there are three factors that cause the decrease of the tradition of kendurian in Grajegan. First, the emerge of some religious groups which prohibit the kenduriantradition. Second, the reluctance of some families to perform the kendurian tradition.. Third, the dependence of the family to the figure of mother. A mother has an important role in the preparation of the feast. If this figure does not exist, the kendurianwhich requires the preparation of certain special foods will not occur.
