Abstract

Colors are often associated with gender stereotypes in society, especially pink for women and blue for men. Pink is commonly perceived as feminine, soft, delicate, emotional, and sometimes even silly, while blue is associated with masculinity, strength, and rationality. These stereotypes have become socially normalized through culture, media, fashion, and advertising. This article discusses how the concept of gendered colors was socially constructed and how it affects both women and men in everyday life. The article also examines the role of toxic masculinity in shaping society’s expectations toward men who engage with feminine-associated colors such as pink. This article uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the social construction of gendered colors, especially the association of pink with femininity and blue with masculinity. The findings show that the meanings attached to colors are not natural, but socially created and continuously reinforced through media representation and cultural norms. Furthermore, color stereotypes contribute to limiting self-expression and maintaining traditional gender expectations. Therefore, this article argues that colors should not be restricted by gender labels because they are forms of personal expression rather than indicators of masculinity or femininity.

Abstract

Bukittinggi City is a tourist and cultural hub in West Sumatra Province, boasting a strong identity through physical icons such as the Jam Gadang Clock Tower. However, Bukittinggi's visual identity in public spaces, particularly on signage, is still dominated by generic typefaces that fail to reflect local cultural character. This research aims to design a distinctive typeface for Bukittinggi City, inspired by a stylization of the traditional Minangkabau Saluak Laka motif. This motif was chosen because of its philosophical alignment with the Carano element of Bukittinggi's official emblem and the motto "Saayun Salangkah," which reflects the values of togetherness and unity of the Bukittinggi community. The research method used was a design approach with an exploratory approach through field observations, interviews, literature studies, visual analysis, and the stylization of motif shapes into letter anatomy. The design results in the creation of a display typeface that maintains legibility and readability for application on signage in public spaces. The designed typeface is expected to serve as a visual element supporting Bukittinggi's city branding while consistently strengthening local cultural identity within the city.

Abstract

TikTok has developed into a digital communication space as well as a stage where late adolescents display, construct, and maintain their self-identity in front of an audience. This study aims to understand how late adolescents in Soreang District, Bandung Regency, use TikTok as a medium for self-presentation through the concepts of front stage, backstage, and impression management in constructing self-identity. Erving Goffman's (1956) Self-Presentation Theory through a dramaturgical approach is used as the analytical framework. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and a constructivist paradigm. Data collection techniques included observation of informants' TikTok accounts, in-depth interviews, documentation studies, and triangulation of sources, techniques, and time involving five late adolescents aged 17-24 residing in Soreang District who actively produce content on TikTok. The results show that in the front stage dimension, informants consciously manage setting, appearance, and manner to display an identity aligned with their respective interests and personalities. In the backstage dimension, informants keep most of their personal lives beyond the audience's reach, creating a clear separation between digital identity and daily life. Meanwhile, in the impression management dimension, informants consistently manage messages, appearance, and responses to audience feedback without altering their basic character. This study concludes that TikTok functions as a digital stage that enables late adolescents to actively construct and negotiate their self-identity through the process of self-presentation.

Abstract

Binge-watching is the activity of watching digital shows for extended periods continuously without interruption. This phenomenon is widely experienced by Generation Z, particularly older adolescents who integrate it into their digital lifestyle. This study aims to understand how the experience of binge-watching Korean dramas plays a role in shaping Generation Z's interpersonal communication patterns through the process of social construction of reality across externalization, objectivation, and internalization dimensions. This study utilizes a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The Social Construction of Reality Theory by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann is employed as the analytical framework. Data collection techniques included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving six Generation Z older adolescents aged 18–24 in the Bahagia Permai Complex, Bandung, who actively engage in binge-watching Korean dramas. The results indicate that in the internalization dimension, informants absorb values, ideal relationship standards, and emotional regulation from Korean dramas into their subjective consciousness. In the objectivation dimension, a habituation of a new culture occurs within peer circles, such as the use of Korean terms and the tolerance of delayed message responses. Meanwhile, in the externalization dimension, this activity exerts a dual impact; it strengthens emotional closeness among fellow fans, yet triggers communication distortion in the form of decreased quality of face-to-face interaction, a state of mind immersed in the storyline (transportation effect), and the use of binge-watching as a passive-aggressive strategy to avoid real-world conflicts. This study concludes that the experience of binge-watching Korean dramas actively constructs a new reality and redefines the interpersonal communication patterns of older adolescents in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the religious community Majelis Satu Rasa as portrayed through photo and video content on its Instagram account. The research is motivated by the growing use of social media, particularly Instagram, not only as a means of personal communication but also as a medium of da'wah utilized by religious communities to construct identity and image in the digital sphere. A descriptive qualitative method combined with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach was employed to examine the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings embedded in six selected photo and video contents. Data were collected through observation of Instagram posts, interviews with the account administrator and congregation members, and visual documentation, with validity established through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings show that at the denotative level, the published content portrays religious study activities, congregational togetherness, social action, and reflections on daily life presented through engaging visuals. At the connotative level, the content represents religiosity, social concern, self-reflection, optimism, and solidarity. At the mythical level, the content constructs the understanding that religion is a guide that brings inner peace, that repentance is a path toward self-improvement, and that caring for others is part of Islamic teaching. These findings indicate that Majelis Satu Rasa successfully represents itself as a religious, humanistic, modern community close to younger audiences, while confirming Instagram's role as a space of representation that constructs meaning, identity, and image for religious communities in the digital era.

Abstract

Conflicts between football supporters in Indonesia manifest not only as physical clashes but also play out on social media through the spread of hate speech, provocations, and information that can exacerbate tensions between supporter groups. Conversely, social media can serve as a communication tool to foster peace and support conflict resolution efforts. This study aims to analyze the role of the Viking Persib Club Instagram account in supporting conflict resolution among football supporters. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed. Data were gathered through observations of the @officialvpc Instagram account's posts, in-depth interviews with the club's media administrators and members, and documentation. Data analysis involved reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, utilizing Lewis A. Coser’s conflict theory—specifically the concepts of realistic conflict, non-realistic conflict, in-group conflict, and out-group conflict. The findings indicate that the Viking Persib Club Instagram account is utilized to clarify information, campaign for peace, educate on social media ethics, and strengthen solidarity among supporters. In realistic conflict scenarios, Instagram serves as a channel for official information to minimize misunderstandings and prevent escalation. Regarding non-realistic conflict, the platform is used to counter provocation and hate speech by promoting narratives of sportsmanship and brotherhood. Meanwhile, in the context of in-group and out-group conflicts, Instagram plays a role in reinforcing internal solidarity while fostering more positive relationships with other supporter groups. The study concludes that social media functions not merely as a channel for disseminating information but also as a strategic communication instrument for supporting conflict resolution and promoting peaceful communication within the football supporter community.

Abstract

Voluntary participatory programs in government organizations depend heavily on the quality of internal communication to sustain employee engagement without administrative mandates. This study examined the internal communication of program administrators at the General Bureau (Biro Umum) of the Regional Secretariat of West Java Province in building employee participation in the Gerakan Rereongan Sapoe Sarebu Program (Poe Ibu), a voluntary daily donation initiative launched through Governor's Circular Number 149/PMD.03.04/KESRA on 1 October 2025. The study aimed to describe how internal communication operated across four goals of the Welch and Jackson (2007) Internal Communication Model: sense of belonging, employee voice, line management communication, and corporate integrity. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving seven purposively selected informants, comprising three program administrators, two participating employees, and two non-participating employees. The findings revealed that sense of belonging was built through voluntary framing grounded in gotong royong values and Sundanese local wisdom, yet did not automatically lead to active participation. Barriers to employee voice stemmed from hierarchical culture creating psychological pressure to remain silent, not from the absence of channels. Department heads proved more influential than all formal communication channels in sustaining participation consistency. Layered transparency-built employee trust, yet trust was found to be a necessary but not sufficient condition for participation. Overall, the success of internal communication in voluntary bureaucratic programs was not determined by the number of available channels, but by the organization's ability to build meaning that touches employees' identity, psychological safety to speak, and trust grounded in consistency. The study recommended strengthening an inclusive communication climate, standardizing line management roles, and enhancing transparency reporting quality.

Abstract

The consumption of ballo' or palm wine in Bulukumba Regency, particularly in Bulukumpa District, has become a traditional custom and is considered part of the local cultural heritage. Some people believe that ballo' functions as a natural stimulant and a way to relieve fatigue after a long day's work. Its close presence in community life makes ballo' consumption considered commonplace in various social activities. However, behind this positive view, excessive consumption of palm wine often has negative impacts, such as loss of self-control that triggers criminal acts, ranging from domestic violence (KDRT) and thuggery to murder. This condition makes ballo' not only seen as a cultural heritage, but also as one of the triggers for the emergence of various social problems in society. Departing from this phenomenon, the fictional film Pemutus Siklus is presented as a medium for social reflection that aims to voice the director's concerns while building collective awareness in society, especially the younger generation, to be more critical of the culture passed down through generations. This film uses a realist directing style by presenting people's lives naturally without excessive dramatization through characters, dialogues, settings, and events that resemble everyday reality. The creative methods used are observation, field research, interviews, and visual exploration to obtain an authentic representation of people's lives. In its application, this film uses André Bazin's theory of realism which emphasizes the integrity of reality through the use of long takes, deep focus, and natural mise-en-scène so that the audience can feel an emotional closeness to the events shown. Through this approach, the film Pemutus Siklus is expected to be a medium for social reflection that presents a stronger, more natural, and more emotional viewing experience.

Abstract

The development of digital communication technology has changed the way Generation Z establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships. One form of interaction that has increasingly developed is the use of artificial intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, as a digital communication space for expressing thoughts, feelings, experiences, and personal concerns. This phenomenon indicates a tendency toward self-disclosure through artificial intelligence-based media, which is interesting to examine from an interpersonal communication perspective. This study aims to analyze the forms and characteristics of Generation Z's self-disclosure through ChatGPT and to understand the factors that encourage self-disclosure in such interactions. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data are collected through interviews and documentation involving Generation Z individuals who use ChatGPT as a medium to express their thoughts, feelings, experiences, or personal concerns. Data analysis is conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that ChatGPT can serve as an alternative space for Generation Z to engage in self-disclosure due to perceived accessibility, communication comfort, and reduced concerns about direct social judgment. From an interpersonal communication perspective, this phenomenon demonstrates that self-disclosure does not only occur through direct human-to-human relationships but can also develop through interaction with artificial intelligence-based communication technology. This study contributes to the expansion of interpersonal communication studies amid the development of digital communication and the increasing use of artificial intelligence.
