Abstract

This study aims to understand users’ interpretation of the absence of the blue tick feature (read receipts) on WhatsApp in interpersonal communication. This phenomenon is no longer perceived merely as a technical setting, but also as a form of symbolic communication that influences the dynamics of digital interaction. This study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore participants lived experiences in depth. The analytical framework used was the Symbolic Interaction Theory developed by George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer, focusing on its three main premises: meaning, interaction, and thought. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving six Communication Science students at Langlangbuana University who actively disabled the feature. The findings indicate that the absence of read receipts is interpreted as a form of privacy regulation and a comfort instrument to protect users from the pressure of instant communication expectations. In terms of interaction, this action functions as a form of social negotiation to reduce pressure for immediate message replies, although it often triggers complaints from surrounding individuals who expect communication transparency. Internally, the absence of reading indicators creates a miscommunication phenomenon in the form of “replying to messages mentally,” while also fostering a sense of empathetic consensus among fellow users who disable the feature. In conclusion, the absence of blue ticks represents a conscious strategy employed by users to manage time autonomy, privacy, and personal boundaries in cyberspace.

Abstract

Social media has evolved into a digital communication platform that allows people to share their criticisms, assessments, and opinions on various issues being discussed, one of which occurs through the Instagram comment section. This study aims to identify the forms of netizens' speech acts, analyze the communicative meaning contained in netizens' comments, and explain the tendency of dominant speech act types reflected in the comment interactions on Resbob's content uploaded by the Instagram account @persibrebels. This study uses a qualitative method with a qualitative content analysis approach. The research data consisted of 55 netizen comments collected through observation and documentation techniques, then analyzed using John L. Austin's speech act theory covering locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, with illocutionary classification referring to Searle's categories. The results show that locutionary acts are dominated by comments containing calls to action (24 data) as well as assessments and condemnations of the perpetrator (23 data). The most dominant illocutionary acts are directive (26 data) and expressive (16 data), shown through calls to report, demands against the perpetrator, and expressions of anger and disappointment. Meanwhile, perlocutionary acts show that netizens' comments most often encourage account-reporting actions (17 data) and trigger collective condemnation (15 data), besides building group solidarity and raising legal awareness. These findings indicate that the Instagram comment section functions not only as a means of expressing opinions but also as a digital communication space that allows netizens to shape meaning, express emotions, and influence public responses to issues deemed sensitive.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of gender meaning in the MS GLOW x Keanu AGL advertisement titled "Cakep Itu Nasib, Good Looking Itu Pilihan" on YouTube, using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis model. This research employs a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis as the method, focusing on identifying the relationship between signifiers and signifieds within five selected scenes of the advertisement. The results of the analysis show that the advertisement constructs gender meaning through two complementary paths: the visual attribute path and the social role path. Through long hair, a pink blazer, a white bathrobe in a bathtub setting, and emotional expression regarding appearance, the advertisement represents men as legitimate subjects in self-care practices and aesthetics. In the perspective of Stuart Hall's representation theory, these signs do not merely reflect social reality, but actively construct new understandings about the relationship between gender and self-care. This representation has implications for marketing communication strategies, showing that inclusive gender representation in advertising can be an effective tool for brand differentiation and market expansion.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of ordinary people becoming content creators on Facebook Pro and to understand the changes in communication style that occur in the process in Ambon City. The study is motivated by the development of Facebook Pro, which provides opportunities for the general public to become content creators through its monetization features, thereby encouraging changes in the role of social media users from merely consumers to content producers while at the same time forming new digital identities. This study used a qualitative method with a narrative study approach. The research informants consisted of six Facebook Pro content creators in Ambon City. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that the informants experienced changes in their communication style, characterized by increased self-confidence, the use of more communicative and persuasive language, the ability to construct stories (storytelling), and increased interaction with audiences through comments, likes, and followers. Based on the narrative analysis, the informants’ experiences fulfill the elements of coherence, narrative fidelity, narrative structure, and moral messages that reflect the process of transformation from ordinary users into content creators. The study also shows that Facebook Pro has shifted the position of the public from merely media consumers to producers of digital narratives who actively construct identities and relationships with audiences.
