Abstract

This research aims to compare the metaphysical views of two great Islamic figures, Al-Ghazali and Ibn Sina, with a focus on the concepts of reality, entities, and the essence of existence. The method used is a literature study by collecting data from classic texts written by both figures. The data is analyzed by comparing the differences and similarities of their views on the metaphysical concepts under study. The results of the research indicate that Al-Ghazali and Ibn Sina have some significant differences regarding reality, entities, and the essence of existence, namely (1) Al-Ghazali claims that reality can only be understood through direct experience, while Ibn Sina believes that reality can be achieved through both experience and rational thinking. (2) Al-Ghazali believes that the essence of existence is eternal, while Ibn Sina considers it dynamic and changeable. (3) Al-Ghazali regards individual entities as something real, whereas Ibn Sina states that individual entities are only a part of a larger reality. (4) Al-Ghazali believes that reason must be adjusted to spiritual experience, while Ibn Sina considers them mutually supportive. (5) Al-Ghazali emphasizes faith and spiritual experience, while Ibn Sina regards religion as a tool to strengthen human intelligence in seeking the truth. Nevertheless, the research also found similarities between them regarding reality, entities, and the essence of existence, namely (1) Both agree that reality, entities, and the essence of existence are interrelated and cannot be understood separately. (2) The existence and essence of an entity depend on the properties inherent in the entity itself. (3) There is a close relationship between reality, entities, and the essence of existence with religion and spirituality. (4) Allah is the source of the existence and essence of all entities in reality.

Abstract

Islamic historiography constitutes an intellectual legacy that plays a vital role in shaping the identity and historical consciousness of the Muslim community. One of the key figures in this tradition is Ibn al-Athir (1160–1233 CE), best known for his monumental work, al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh. This work not only records historical events chronologically but also presents a narrative construction rich with theological, moral, and political dimensions. This study aims to examine Ibn al-Athir’s historiographical method in al-Kāmil, focusing on his writing approach, sources used, as well as his editorial and narrative interpretation strategies. Employing the historical research method (heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography), this research draws on al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh (Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah edition) as its primary source, utilizing a historiographical approach. The study finds that Ibn al-Athir applied the principles of tadhkirah (remembrance), ṣaḥīḥ (authenticity), and tāmm (completeness) in his historical writing. Furthermore, the findings reveal a deliberate strategy of omission concerning politically and socially sensitive parts of the narrative. Thus, al-Kāmil fī al-Tārīkh emerges as a model of Islamic historical writing that combines factual accuracy with meaning-making, significantly contributing to the development of both classical and contemporary Islamic historiography. This work remains relevant as a primary source and as a critical object of study for understanding the dynamics of Islamic historical writing across eras. Through a deep understanding of Ibn al-Athir’s historiographical method, this study seeks to contribute to the advancement of contemporary Islamic historiography.

Abstract

This study examines how the Qur'an and modern psychology are integrated to create a holistic approach to psychology. The main focus of the study is a hermeneutic analysis of the concept of the soul (nafs) found in the Qur'an, including the levels of the nafs (Al-Nafs al-Ammārah bi al-Sū', Al-Nafs al-Lawwāmah, and Al-Nafs al-Mutma'innah), as well as the concept of fitrah. The results of the study indicate that the nafs is a complex entity with material and spiritual dimensions, and its development is closely related to purification. The concept of fitrah provides an optimistic basis for psychological therapy centered on the innate goodness of humans. Holistic methods such as muhasabah, dhikr, and tazkiyatun nafs are offered in Sufi psychology to achieve spiritual awareness and mental health. This integration creates a new conceptual framework that blends the spiritual perspective of the Qur'an with the findings of contemporary empirical psychology. This allows for a broader understanding of the soul and the development of more useful interventions.

Abstract

This study examines the issue of religious tolerance in Islamic civilization, focusing on two major empires: Andalusia (711–1492) and the Ottoman Empire (1299–1922). The topic is significant as it challenges the stereotype of Islam as an exclusive faith by highlighting historical periods when pluralism and coexistence served as the foundation of a prosperous civilization. The research aims to identify the theological and social principles that supported tolerance in these two contexts and to assess their relevance to the modern world, which continues to face growing polarization and identity-based conflicts. This study relies entirely on library research, examining legal documents, theological writings, and intellectual works to explain the concept, foundations, and implications of religious tolerance in these two empires. This approach enables a deeper historical-comparative understanding grounded in textual and scholarly sources. The findings reveal that Andalusia promoted cultural and intellectual coexistence, while the Ottoman Empire institutionalized tolerance through the millet system, ensuring legal and social autonomy for non-Muslim communities. Both models were grounded in the Islamic principles of justice (‘adl) and public welfare (maṣlaḥah) as the foundation for enduring social harmony. The study concludes that Islamic tolerance is not merely a political accommodation but deeply rooted in Islamic ethical theology, emphasizing justice, diversity, and compassion. These historical models provide valuable insights for shaping modern social and educational policies that foster pluralism, equity, and sustainable peace in today’s globalized world.

Abstract

This study explores the evolution of Islamic education during the Mecca and Medina periods with the aim of uncovering the transformation of informal education into a structured and inclusive system. The problem with this research is the lack of comprehensive studies on how Islamic education has adapted to social, political, and cultural changes in both periods, as well as their implications for Islamic education today. The purpose of this study is to analyze comparative educational methods, the roles of figures, and the driving factors of evolution, such as the Hijrah, to understand their historical contributions in shaping the principles of Islamic education. The method used in this study is a literature study. All data and information were obtained from various sources and related literature, including scientific journals, research articles, and the writings of experts discussing the historical thinking of the development of Islamic education during the Mecca and Medina periods. The results show that Islamic education during the Mecca period focused on instilling moral values and monotheism amidst all forms of rejection from the Quraysh. Meanwhile, in Medina, education became more holistic with Holaqoh in the mosque, and the integration of practical sciences. This evolution opened up access to Islamic education to form the foundation of a more complete civilization. Based on the results of this research, we hope to be able to integrate these evolutionary values into contemporary Islamic education. This research will be very useful in increasing insight and understanding, enabling innovation in contemporary Islamic education to become more moral.

Abstract

The Mamogang tradition is a form of local wisdom of the Central Tapanuli community, North Sumatra, in welcoming the holy month of Ramadan. This tradition not only functions as a social and cultural activity, but also contains deep religious values. Mamogang is marked by the slaughter of livestock and the distribution of meat to the community, especially to those in need, as a form of gratitude and social concern. This tradition reflects the integration of Islamic values and local Batak culture, which has been going on since the early Islamization process in the coastal areas of West Sumatra. The implementation of  mamogang also involves self-purification rituals such as Balimo-limo which strengthen the spiritual aspect before fasting. However, modernization and the decreasing participation of the younger generation are challenges in its preservation. This article uses a qualitative approach through literature study to explore the meaning, history, and efforts to preserve Mamogang as a symbol of cultural resistance and a means of character education based on Islamic values. The Mamogang tradition not only strengthens cultural identity, but also becomes a spiritual reflection in welcoming the blessed month of Ramadan.

Abstract

This article examines the moral philosophy of Fahruddin Faiz as articulated in his work Filsafat Moral: Dari Al-Ghazali, Pakubuwana IV, Lawrence Kohlberg, hingga Hans Jonas (Mizan, 2024). Using a qualitative library research method with a critical-comparative analytical approach, this study argues that Faiz constructs an original triadic synthesis — integrating Al-Ghazali's ethics of spiritual transformation (akhlaq), Kohlberg's staged theory of moral development, and Hans Jonas's ethics of responsibility (Verantwortungsethik) — as a comprehensive foundation for contemporary Islamic character education. The findings reveal that this synthesis systematically addresses the limitations of each theory: Al-Ghazali provides transcendental depth, Kohlberg contributes systematic cognitive scaffolding, and Jonas extends both with a futuristic orientation of responsibility toward coming generations. Together, they form a three-dimensional moral model — vertically transcendental, horizontally rational, and temporally futuristic — that transcends the Islam-West dichotomy. This model carries significant implications for reformulating character education in Indonesian Islamic educational institutions, particularly pesantren-based universities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the Bluk Gebluk tradition of the community in Genengwaru Village, Rembang Subdistrict, Pasuruan Regency, as well as its connection to the Risalatul Abidin text from the perspectives of Islamic history and culture. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design enriched by historical methods, and the data is analyzed using frameworks from Islamic anthropology and cultural sociology. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results indicate that the Bluk Gebluk tradition is a form of cultural da’wah that functions as an effective medium for non-formal Islamic education. The values of aqidah, akhlak, and fiqh are internalized through contextual collective practices in community life. Historically, this tradition reflects the continuity of culture-based da’wah by ulama connected to Islamic literature, particularly the book Risalatul Abidin. Furthermore, this tradition contributes to strengthening social cohesion and shaping the religious character of the community. Despite facing the challenges of modernization, the tradition’s sustainability is supported by the role of religious leaders and its alignment with local culture. Thus, the Bluk Gebluk tradition remains relevant as a model for culture-based Islamic da’wah and education in the contemporary era.
