Abstract

Stoic philosophy has long been a foundation for moral and ethical life in Western civilization. On the other hand, Islam provides a comprehensive moral and spiritual guide. This research aims to explore how the core principles of Stoicism, such as self-control, courage, wisdom, and justice, share similarities with Islamic teachings. Through a comparative approach, this journal examines the parallels and distinctions between these two  perspectives, and how Stoicism can be understood within the framework of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The history of Islamic civilization is divided into three major periods: the classical, the medieval, and the modern. The classical period marked the peak of Islamic glory and the progress of its civilization. However, during the medieval period, Islam experienced a decline due to various internal and external challenges. In the modern period, Islamic reform movements began to rise as a response to past setbacks. This study aims to interpret the periodization of Islamic civilization by focusing on the medieval and modern periods through a literature review approach. The analysis draws from relevant scholarly works that explore the dynamics of these eras. The findings suggest that both periods can be understood through a temporal lens, examining the driving factors behind their rise and decline as well as key figures who influenced the course of Islamic civilization. This study is expected to offer a comprehensive understanding and serve as a source of inspiration to foster renewed motivation in Islamic propagation.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between Islam and terrorism with a focus on the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) movement in Indonesia in the period 1993 – 2024. This research aims to trace the history, development and socio-political impacts caused by JI's activities in Indonesia. This research method is library research, through research steps carried out, namely primary and secondary data collection, data management and writing. JI's existence cannot be separated from its connection to a pre-existing group, namely the Indonesian Islamic State. The JI movement is quiet and non-frontal through conditioning on collecting funds from members and trying to recruit new members. The results of this research show that the Jemaah Islamiyah organization was founded in 1993 and stated that it would disband in 2024. The movement carried out by JI was motivated by an attitude that declared war on all forms of discrimination against Islam as well as opposing all policies issued by the government. Indonesia and its peak was carrying out actions which they thought were jihad against disbelief but were declared by the state as a terrorist organization. This research is important to be used as a basic reference for the development of historical science, especially in exploring knowledge about the existence of organizations and their movements, especially in terms of threatening the integrity of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

In the existence of a cultured society, various customs and traditions emerge as a result of the knowledge available. This also applies to agrarian communities. Indonesia itself is the largest agrarian country ever recorded in Asian history, particularly in the agricultural sector of rice cultivation. For hundreds of years, Indonesia has been one of the largest rice-producing countries, especially in Parahyangan or West Java. The Sundanese people in this region have practiced agrarian customs for centuries. One of the traditions that remains preserved is Seren Taun, a traditional ceremony held to celebrate the harvest. This ceremony is still practiced and maintained in traditional villages such as Kanekes Baduy, Ciptagelar in Sukabumi, Cigugur in Kuningan, and other customary villages. Interestingly, Seren Taun is not only found in traditional villages but can also be observed in remote villages. Examples include Bojongsari and Sukamaju villages in Nyalindung District, Sukabumi Regency, where this tradition is still upheld with distinct characteristics. The Seren Taun ceremony in these villages differs significantly from the version practiced in traditional communities. This ceremony has undergone various forms of acculturation, whether in terms of social culture or religion. With the discovery of the Meteumeuyan Manuscript, which serves as a customary guide or is also called ririmbon panen, this study attempts to reveal the contents of the manuscript. However, with all the traditional rules attached to it, Seren Taun tends to preserve agrarian traditions across generations, ultimately limiting openness to innovation and social change.

Abstract

This qualitative study analyzed the implementation of Bugis community marriage practices in Malangke and found them to be in accordance with maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. Primary data was collected from traditional, religious, and community leaders. The research revealed that the cultural Islamization within Bugis marriage customs ensures their alignment with Islamic principles. This integration highlights the inherent benefits (maṣlaḥah) for both spouses within the cultural framework. Consequently, this marriage culture aligns with the concept of al-ʿādah aṣ-ṣaḥīḥah or al-ʿurf aṣ-ṣaḥīḥ (sound customs), making it a valid basis for legal considerations. Specific practices such as Mappasikarawa or Mappasiluka (initial contact) resonate with the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) guidance on marital blessings. Furthermore, rituals like Mappassau Botting and Cemme Passili (groom caring for and bathing the bride) align with the maqāṣid al-sharīʿah principle of lineage (nasl). The symbolic messages embedded within Bugis traditional marriages consistently reflect the community's values and the integration of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, ultimately aiming to achieve good and prevent harm (maṣlaḥah).

Abstract

This study explores Surah Al-Baqarah verse 186 through the lens of Islamic philosophy, emphasizing its ontological, epistemological, and ethical dimensions. Ontologically, the verse affirms that Allah SWT is Wājib al-Wujūd (Necessary Being), whose presence transcends space and time yet remains spiritually close to humankind. Epistemologically, it outlines that human knowledge of God arises through divine revelation and spiritual experience, especially through sincere supplication. Ethically, the verse implies that divine nearness fosters obedience, moral responsibility, and spiritual consciousness. Using a qualitative method with a thematic-interpretative approach, this paper draws from classical and modern Islamic philosophical thought. The study concludes that divine nearness (qurb Ilāhī) is not merely theological but forms a metaphysical foundation for human morality and consciousness, offering a comprehensive framework for Islamic philosophical discourse.

Abstract

This research examines the glory of the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam as a center of trade and the spread of Islam in the 16th century. The object of this research includes factors that contribute to the development of Aceh, including geographical position, the role of merchants and Sufis, the support of local rulers, and a structured system of government. The research method used is a literature study with a descriptive-historical approach, which includes collecting sources, verification, interpretation, and compiling historical narratives. The study results show that Aceh, with its strategic location, is a bustling maritime trade center, attracting traders from different countries. The process of Islamization in Aceh was influenced by the interaction between traders and Sufis and the support of local rulers who strengthened the spread of the religion. Under the leadership of Sultan Iskandar Muda, Aceh reached the peak of its glory, becoming one of the five largest Islamic kingdoms in the world. Despite facing challenges such as internal conflicts and threats from foreign powers, Aceh's cultural and historical heritage remains relevant today. This research is expected to contribute to preserving Islamic historical identity in Indonesia and enriching scientific treasures in Islamic government history.
