Abstract

The integration of digital media in English language learning has provided new opportunities to support students’ vocabulary development, particularly through audio-visual materials. One potential medium is Disney animated movies, which offer authentic language use, visual context, and engaging storylines. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions on Disney animated movies as self-directed vocabulary learning media. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving 22 ninth-grade students of MTsN 2 Jember. Data were collected through classroom observations, open-ended questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by technique and source triangulation. The findings reveal that students generally hold positive perceptions of Disney animated movies, perceiving them as interesting, enjoyable, easily accessible, and helpful in understanding vocabulary through visual context, improving pronunciation, increasing learning motivation, and supporting independent learning. However, several negative perceptions were also identified, including difficulties in understanding fast-spoken dialogues, reliance on subtitles, limited focus due to distractions, and technical problems such as unstable internet connections and unclear audio quality. This study concludes that Disney animated movies have strong potential as self-directed vocabulary learning media when accompanied by appropriate guidance and learning strategies.

Abstract

Teaching vocabulary plays a fundamental role in English language learning, particularly in contexts where English is taught as a foreign language. Many students still experience difficulties in understanding and remembering English vocabulary due to limited exposure and low learning motivation. Therefore, teachers are required to use appropriate and engaging learning media to support vocabulary learning. Flashcards are visual learning media that can help students understand word meanings more easily and increase their participation in the classroom. This research aims to explore the use of flashcards in teaching English vocabulary at Ban Buketamong School, Narathiwat, Thailand. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design involving one English teacher and 19 eighth grade students. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and document review. To ensure data validity, source triangulation and technique triangulation were applied. The findings showed that the teacher planned flashcard based instruction by preparing lesson plans, selecting relevant vocabulary materials, designing teacher made laminated flashcards, and organizing learning activities. The implementation emphasized clear learning goals, vocabulary related to daily activities and nature, and systematic procedures including introduction, practice, and review stages. Evaluation was conducted through formative assessment during classroom interaction and summative assessment using picture based quizzes.

Abstract

Environmental problems such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change require educational strategies rooted in both ethical and spiritual values. This study explores the presence of ecotheological values in English education materials used in senior high schools in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach, the research examines English textbooks used nationally in Indonesia to identify themes related to environmental stewardship, ethical responsibility toward nature, and spiritual engagement with the environment. The findings reveal that environmental issues are only addressed in the second-grade English textbook, while the theological values here are largely implicit and rarely emphasized. Most texts present environmental content from scientific or practical perspectives, with limited integration of theological or ethical frameworks. This suggests an opportunity to foster ecological awareness and character development through English education. The study recommends a more intentional inclusion of ecotheological values in English language teaching to support holistic environmental education aligned with national character-building goals. By embedding ecotheological values, English learning can serve not only linguistic development but also moral and environmental consciousness. This integration may also strengthen the relevance of English education to local cultural and religious contexts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the strong representation of trauma and the construction of female identity in Sylvia Plath's poems, which are often discussed in literary studies, literary psychology, and even feminist criticism. This study aims to analyse how stylistic elements in the poems ‘Daddy’ and ‘Lady Lazarus’ are used to present traumatic experiences, female identity crises, and resistance to patriarchal domination. The method used is descriptive qualitative through in-depth reading of diction, metaphors, imagery, repetition, and symbols enriched by trauma theory, literary psychology, and stylistics. The results of this study are expected to show that the poem ‘Daddy’ reveals deep trauma through extreme metaphors such as Nazis, death, and wounds, while the poem ‘Lady Lazarus’ describes the resurrection of female characters through irony, repetition, and body imagery arranged as symbols of the healing process. Both poems show that poetic language becomes a space for the poet to voice traumatic experiences while simultaneously reconstructing the identity of women who were once constrained by the patriarchal system.
