Abstract

This study aims to compare the fishing performance of wire traps (bubu kawat) using two different types of bait, namely oil palm fruit and coconut pulp, in Kelari Lake, Muaro Jambi. The research was conducted over a period of 20 days with two treatments and a total of 20 repetitions. Each treatment used 10 units of wire traps placed randomly at the study site. The observed parameters included fish species, number and weight of catches, and frequency of fish occurrence. The results showed that seven fish species were captured during the study, namely Nilem (Osteochilus vittatus), Kapiat (Puntioplites falcifer), Sebarau (Hampala ampalong), Tembakang (Helostoma temminckii), Gabus (Channa striata), Sepat (Trichopodus pectoralis), and Baung (Hemibagrus nemurus). Nilem was the most frequently caught species in both bait treatments, while Gabus had the lowest catch frequency. Statistically, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the number and weight of catches between the two bait types, although coconut pulp produced slightly higher catch numbers. Environmental parameters such as temperature, pH, and water depth were within the optimal range for freshwater fish, supporting the fishing activity. This study concludes that both bait types can be effectively used with wire traps, but oil palm fruit provides more consistent results for fishermen in Kelari Lake.

Abstract

The comet fish (Carassius auratus) is one type of freshwater ornamental fish that has many enthusiasts and maintains a relatively stable price in both domestic and international markets. The high demand for comet fish needs to be supported by excellent feed given to the fish, whether in the form of natural feed or commercial feed. Commercial feed has many advantages, including having a very complete and balanced nutritional composition as well as consistent availability throughout the year. In addition, one of the important elements in feed management is the feeding frequency. Feeding too infrequently can cause the fish to lack nutrients when needed, whereas feeding too often can reduce water quality. This study aims to determine the effect of commercial feed feeding frequency on the absolute length growth of comet fish. This study uses the Complete Randomized Design (CRD) experimental method with 3 treatments and 9 repetitions, where treatment A (frequency 2 times a day), B (frequency 3 times a day), and treatment C (frequency 4 times a day). The test animals were comet fish measuring 2-3 cm, totaling 81 individuals with a stocking density of 1 fish/L. The experimental medium used freshwater with a volume of 3 L per container. The results of the study showed that treatment B provided the best results for the absolute length growth of 2-3 cm comet fish at 2.2 cm per fish. Water quality data showed a water temperature ranging from 28.1 to 28.3 °C, a pH ranging from 7.16 to 7.19, and dissolved oxygen ranging from 5.39 to 5.57 ppm.

Abstract

Mangrove forest conservation is a crucial measure to prevent further ecological degradation in mangrove ecosystems. Such efforts require substantial financial resources for both conservation activities and management operations. Therefore, this study aims to estimate the community’s Willingness to Pay (WTP) for mangrove forest conservation in Pantai Lango Village and to identify the factors influencing their WTP. The research employs purposive sampling for sample selection and utilizes a parametric analytical approach through a logistic regression model. The findings indicate that the average WTP derived from the logistic regression model is Rp 39,184.69 per person. Additionally, two variables are found to significantly influence the community’s WTP in Pantai Lango Village, namely the bid amount and income.

Abstract

The rice paddy eel (Monopterus albus) is a freshwater fishery commodity of high economic value and is widely favored by Indonesian consumers. This species has the ability to breathe through its skin and gills, allowing it to survive in environments with low oxygen levels, enabling cultivation in muddy waters, swamps, and rice fields with minimal water quality conditions. The growth of rice paddy eels is strongly influenced by seed size and the type of feed provided. Eels measuring 12–15 cm can be fed either natural or commercial feed, although the use of commercial feed is considered less relevant due to its high price, despite its complete nutritional composition. An alternative feed source is trash fish, a type of marine fish waste containing adequate nutritional value and potentially supporting growth efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of different types of trash fish feed on the absolute weight growth of rice paddy eels measuring 12–15 cm in experimental tanks. The research was conducted using an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of three treatments and nine replications. The treatments included the administration of different species of trash fish: Treatment A using tembang fish, Treatment B using trevally fish, and Treatment C using petek fish. Rice paddy eels used as test organisms had an initial average weight of 5 g/individual and were stocked at a density of three individuals per 0.5 m². The experimental tanks were filled with freshwater at a depth of 10 cm. The results showed that Treatment B produced the highest increase in absolute weight growth, reaching 3.37 g/individual. Water quality parameters during the experiment remained within optimal ranges for eel cultivation, with temperatures of 27.1–27.7 °C, pH values of 6.7–7.1, and dissolved oxygen levels of 5.32–5.61 ppm, indicating suitable conditions for growth.

Abstract

The Sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus var.) has the advantage of adapting quickly to new environments, has a relatively high nutritional content, is technically easier to cultivate, and has a short life cycle, allowing for quicker harvest. Furthermore, this fish offers a very profitable economic prospect. Seeds measuring 9-12 cm can minimize the risk of cultivation failure due to their more stable and uniform growth. In aquaculture, feed plays a vital role because it directly affects the growth rate and health of fish. Commercial feeds have a very complete and balanced nutritional composition. One important element in feeding management is feed dosage. If the feeding is overdosed, it can pollute the aquatic environment and vice versa if the deficiency can cause malnutrition. This study aims to determine the effect of commercial feed doses on the absolute weight growth of sangkuriang catfish measuring 9-12 cm in experimental tanks. This study used an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatment in this study was the provision of commercial feed with different doses. Treatment A; dose 3% of the weight of the test animal biomass, treatment B; dose 5% of the weight of the test animal biomass, treatment C; dose 7% of the weight of the test animal biomass, treatment D; dose 9%, of the weight of the test animal biomass and treatment E; dose 11% of the weight of the test animal biomass. The test animals used sangkuriang catfish measuring 9-12 cm with an average weight of 5 g/individual. The stocking density was 1 individual/liter, the experimental media used fresh water with a volume of 7 liters/tank. The results showed that treatment C provided the best results for absolute weight growth of 9-12 cm Sangkuriang catfish, at 8,8 grams per fish. Water quality data showed a water temperature of 27.8-28.8°C, pH of 6.36-6.60, and dissolved oxygen of 5.60-5.75 ppm.

Abstract

Energy efficiency in small-scale fishing boats has become a critical issue due to their high dependence on fossil fuels, rising operational costs, and environmental impacts. Fishing boats less than 5 GT generally operate with fluctuating engine loads, potentially reducing energy conversion performance. This study aims to analyze the energy conversion efficiency of fishing boats operating in Bali Province. The research method uses a descriptive-quantitative approach through field studies. Primary data were obtained from measurements of fuel consumption, engine power and speed, electrical load, and operating duration at each stage of the boat's activities, while secondary data came from technical documents and operational logbooks. Efficiency analysis was conducted by comparing the input energy from diesel fuel and the output energy in the form of mechanical and electrical energy. The results show that energy consumption is dominated by the propulsion system, especially during the cruising phase. The total energy conversion efficiency is still relatively low, ranging from 22%–30%, and decreases during the maneuvering and fishing phases due to partial engine loads. These findings suggest that improvements in operational efficiency and engine maintenance are needed to reduce fuel consumption, reduce operational costs, and support the aspirations of small-scale fishing.
