Abstract

This research was motivated by the need for alternative natural treatments for bacterial infections, particularly Escherichia coli, a pathogen that causes gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections. The mangrove plant Acanthus ilicifolius is known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and polyphenols, which have antibacterial potential. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the antimicrobial potential of Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract against E. coli and to determine the most effective extract concentration in inhibiting its growth. The study was conducted experimentally in a laboratory using the agar diffusion method. Leaf samples were collected from the coast of Wara Selatan District, Takalala Village, Palopo City, then dried, ground, and extracted using a maceration method with 96% ethanol. The resulting extract was tested against E. coli at four concentrations: 15%, 30%, and 60%. Paper disks containing concentrated Acanthus ilicifolius extract were then placed on agar media that had been inoculated with E. coli test bacteria, then incubated for 24 hours at 37°C. After that, observations and measurements of the inhibition zone were carried out with a caliper. The results showed that Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract had antibacterial activity against E. coli, which was indicated by the formation of an inhibition zone around the paper disk. The average inhibition zone ranged from 10.5 mm to 12.5 mm. A concentration of 30% produced the largest inhibition zone of 12.5 mm, indicating the highest effectiveness, although there was no tendency that higher concentrations produced larger inhibition zones. This indicates that the antibacterial effectiveness of the extract is not linear with increasing concentration.

Abstract

Fish handling is a series of treatments carried out on fish without changing the basic nature of the fish itself. Handling the catch quickly and carefully on board is very important to maintain the freshness of fish and squid. The importance of handling the catch is because fish and squid are commodities that are easily damaged if not handled properly. KM. Bandar Nelayan 118 is one of the types of fishing vessels that focus on catching squid (loligo sp). This study aims to determine the process of handling squid (loligo sp) on a squid fishing vessel. This study was conducted on the KM. Bandar Nelayan 118 fishing vessel anchored at Benoa Harbor, Bali. The method used in this study is qualitative analysis by directly following the process of handling squid on board. From the results of observations during the study it was known that the handling of squid on board KM. Bandar Nelayan 118 consisted of; storage in baskets, weighing, sorting, washing, arranging on trays, arranging and freezing in cast iron to loading and unloading squid in the middle of the sea.

Abstract

Fish is a highly perishable commodity that experiences rapid quality deterioration after being caught, thus requiring a rapid, accurate, and practical freshness detection method. Conventional methods such as organoleptic tests have limitations due to their subjective nature, thereby necessitating the development of alternative methods based on digital technology. This study aims to develop a smartphone-based Digital Image Colorimetry (DIC) method to detect fish freshness using natural dye from butterfly pea extract (Clitoria ternatea), and evaluate the accuracy of DIC results compared to conventional organoleptic tests. This research employed an experimental quantitative approach by utilizing indicator paper labeled with butterfly pea extract. Anthocyanins contained in the extract functioned as pH indicators that respond sensitively to volatile compounds (ammonia) produced during fish storage. Color changes were analyzed through RGB values obtained using a smartphone application and compared with panelist-based organoleptic evaluations. The results showed that the DIC method was successfully developed using butterfly pea extract as a natural dye on indicator paper. The observed color changes during fish deterioration were consistent with the RGB value patterns. Furthermore, the DIC analysis demonstrated strong consistency with organoleptic test results, indicating that the DIC method is accurate, practical, and potentially applicable as an alternative to conventional methods for determining fish freshness using a smartphone-based system.

Abstract

The Fish Landing Base (PPI) plays a crucial role as a logistics hub and primary service provider for small-scale fishermen in Indonesia. Amid the demands of economic development and the strategic role of Balikpapan City as the gateway to the National Capital (IKN), the performance of PPI Manggar Baru must be effectively assessed to ensure optimal support for the local fisheries sector. This study aims to measure the satisfaction level of fishermen using PPI Manggar Baru and identify priorities for facility improvements. The method used is descriptive quantitative through surveys involving fishermen who use the PPI Manggar Baru services. The data were analyzed using two main techniques: the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) to determine the overall satisfaction index by mapping the gap between expectations (importance) and performance (reality). The analysis results show that the CSI for PPI Manggar Baru is 69.70%, indicating that the satisfaction level of fishermen falls into the "Satisfied" category. However, 30.30% still indicates dissatisfaction, caused by differences in fishermen’s perceptions of the importance of facilities and the performance provided. A key factor influencing satisfaction is that facilities considered highly important by fishermen have not met their expectations. This study recommends that the management of PPI Manggar Baru improve and enhance the facilities that are deemed important by fishermen to achieve a more optimal satisfaction level.

Abstract

Sea surface temperature (SST) is a key oceanographic parameter influencing the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fish in tropical waters. This study aims to analyze the effect of SST on small pelagic fish catches in Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 573. Catch data were obtained from the Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia (FRCI) for the 2015–2021 period, while SST data were derived from Aqua MODIS satellite imagery with 4 km resolution, processed using Seadas 7.4 software. A simple linear regression was applied to examine the relationship between SST and fish catches. The results indicate a negative relationship, where each 1 °C increase in SST tends to reduce catches by approximately 35 thousand tons. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.531 shows that 53.1% of the catch variability is explained by SST, while the remaining is influenced by other factors such as primary productivity (chlorophyll-a), upwelling intensity, global climate phenomena (ENSO, IOD), and fishing pressure. These findings highlight SST as an important indicator for predicting fishing seasons in FMA 573 and emphasize the need to integrate satellite-based oceanographic data into Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) to ensure sustainable fisheries in Indonesian tropical waters.

Abstract

Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the world's leading aquaculture commodities. Sukamara Regency is a leading regency for whiteleg shrimp cultivation in Central Kalimantan Province. Vannamei shrimp are euryhaline organisms, meaning they can survive in salinities ranging from 0.5 to 50 ppt, but optimal growth is generally reported to be in the range of 15 to 25 ppt. Shrimp's osmoregulation mechanism allows them to adjust their body's osmotic pressure to the environment, but this process requires extra energy. At salinities outside the optimal range, energy allocated for growth is diverted to maintaining ion balance, thus reducing growth rate. This study aimed to examine the effect of different salinities on the growth and survival of whiteleg shrimp. This research was conducted at the PSDKU Sukamara Fish Farming Laboratory and Workshop over a four-month period, from preparation to data analysis. The method used in this study was a completely randomized design consisting of 3 different salinity treatments and 4 replications. The highest growth performance results were found in P3 (salinity 20 ppt) followed by P2, and P1. While survival did not show any significant difference, with the highest survival rate in P3 treatment at 85%, followed by P1, and P2 at 75%. Water quality parameters showed that the water quality of cultivated fish was still in optimal condition, which showed that the temperature ranged between 26-28 oC, pH ranged between 7.8-8.2, and DO ranged between 10.4-10.9 mg/L.
