Abstract

This study aims to analyze the economic feasibility of vaname shrimp farming (Litopenaeus vannamei) with a semi-intensive system in Ciheras Village, Tasikmalaya Regency. Data collection technique was conducted by census method on 10 shrimp farmers representing semi-intensive cultivation technology. Data collected include investment costs, operating costs, production results, and receipts from shrimp sales. Financial analysis is carried out through four main indicators, including profit (profit), Revenue Cost Ratio (R/C), Break Even Point (BEP), and Payback Period (PP). The results showed that the average net profit obtained by farmers per cycle reached Rp58, 750, 000. The pond business in Ciheras village was declared feasible based on financial feasibility test (Revenue Cost Ratio 1.35; Payback Period 2.54 years, and Break Even Point Rp413, 501, 004 per year). The implementation of pond operations in the rainy season is more profitable than the dry season with a value of Revenue Cost Ratio of 1.64; Payback Period of 2.82 years, and Break Even Point of Rp134, 576, 392. This finding shows that semi-intensive vaname shrimp farming in Ciheras Village is not only economically feasible, but has the potential to improve the welfare of coastal communities. One of the important keys to the profitability of this semi-intensive farm emphasizes the importance of production cost efficiency, especially in feed and fry components. The final result of this research is expected to be a reference for Pond operations for farmers, investors, and local governments.

Abstract

Boat lift nets are one of the fishing gears used by fishermen at the Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN) Sibolga, North Sumatra. However, the level of their environmental friendliness needs to be evaluated because this gear often catches various non-target species (bycatch) and uses a relatively small mesh size of 0.5 inches. This study aimed to determine the environmental friendliness level of boat lift nets based on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) at PPN Sibolga. The research was conducted at Tangkahan Murni, one of the landing sites within the working area of PPN Sibolga, from April 30 to May 28, 2025. A descriptive method with a quantitative approach was used through surveys and interviews using questionnaires. Respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique, involving 10 boat lift net units out of a total of 52 units operating at PPN Sibolga. The respondents included crew members, skippers, vessel managers, fish sorters, consumers, and local community members. The observed variables referred to the nine CCRF criteria. The results showed that the boat lift nets at PPN Sibolga obtained a score of 28, which falls into the very environmentally friendly category. According to the FAO (1995) guidelines, scores ranging from 28 to 36 are classified as very environmentally friendly fishing gear.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of substituting tapioca flour and Modified Cassava Flour (MOCAF) on the chemical characteristics of crackers formulated with Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed. Four treatments were prepared with varying proportions of seaweed, tapioca flour, and MOCAF. Chemical analyses included measurements of moisture, ash, protein, fat, carbohydrate and crude fiber content. Results showed that increasing the proportion of seaweed consistently elevated moisture content (5.32-9.23%), ash content (0.98-2.02%), protein content (2.47-4.04%), fat content (0.29-0.52%), carbohydrate content (84.19-90.95%) and crude fiber (1.57-4.04%) levels in the raw crackers. The highest values across all parameters were observed in treatment KR4 (32% seaweed), whereas the lowest values were recorded in treatment KR1 (without seaweed addition). Moisture, ash, and fat content in all treatments complied with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for raw crackers. The enhancement in chemical characteristics were primarily attributed to the naturally high levels of fiber, hydrocolloids, minerals, and protein present in Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed. These findings demonstrate that partial substitution of tapioca and MOCAF flours with seaweed enhances the nutritional profile of crackers, thus potentially yielding products with greater functional value.

Abstract

The potential of eel (Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) in Indonesia is quite high. The potential of eel seeds from nature has not been optimally utilized for raising to consumption size, so it is necessary to develop rearing technology. It is hoped that the technology applied and developed can be carried out both on a small and large scale. The problem in fish cultivation is maintaining good water quality. One technology that can be applied is the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology or a cultivation system with recirculation using natural filters derived from biofilter plants. The purpose of this study was to determine the use of different biofilters in the recirculation system on the growth and survival of eel (A. marmorata). The study was conducted at the Water Quality and Aquatic Biology Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Tadulako University, Palu. The study was designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments applied were in the form of biofilters, consisting of: treatment A = Lettuce Biofilter, treatment B = Celery Biofilter, treatment C = Pakcoy Biofilter, treatment D = Water spinach Biofilter. The results of the study showed that the use of different plant biofilters significantly affected the growth of the absolute weight of eels. The use of water spinach biofilter obtained the highest value in absolute weight growth (0.29±0.05 g), specific weight growth (1.83±0.28%); the lowest value of absolute weight growth in the use of lettuce biofilter (0.19±0.03 g) and specific weight growth in the packcoy biofilter treatment (1.38±0.21%). The highest survival rate was in the water spinach biofilter treatment (76±8.94%), while the lowest was in the celery biofilter treatment (60±14.14%). The results of the study concluded that the use of water spinach biofilter is the best treatment for the enlargement of eels (Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the quality and food safety of dried salted fish marketed intraditional and modern markets based on microbiological parameters and chemicalcontamination. Samples of dried salted fish from traditional markets (P1) and modern markets(P2) were tested for sensory, the presence of Staphylococcus aureus, and formalin content. Thetest results showed that the sensory values in both samples met SNI 2346:2015, but for thefungal parameter, sample P1 obtained a score of 9 and P2 a score of 8, indicating contaminationin both samples, although higher in the traditional market. The Staphylococcus aureus testshowed that sample P1 contained 9.1 × 10² colonies/g, exceeding the SNI 2332.9:2015threshold of 1 × 10² colonies/g, while sample P2 was not detected. The formalin test using atest kit showed negative results in both samples, so dried salted fish is relatively safe fromhazardous chemical contamination. These findings confirm that differences in marketconditions influence the microbiological quality of dried salted fish, with traditional marketsexperiencing higher contamination levels than modern markets. The implications of thisresearch are the need for strict supervision, implementation of hygiene and sanitation standards,and education for producers and traders to ensure that dried salted fish products sold are safe,healthy, and meet quality standards

Abstract

Feed efficiency and mineral adequacy to support molting and growth are major challenges in the cultivation of mud crab (Scylla serrata). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementing maggot meal (Hermetia illucens) and gonggong shell meal in feed formulations on molting frequency, growth performance, and survival rate of mud crabs. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of three treatments: A (control—trash fish), B (feed + 5% maggot meal + 1% gonggong shell meal), and C (feed + 10% maggot meal + 3% gonggong shell meal), each with five replications. The crabs were reared for 30 days and fed daily at 5% of the total biomass. Parameters observed included absolute weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), molting frequency, survival rate, proximate composition of the feed, and water quality. The results showed that treatment C produced the highest growth performance (absolute weight gain of 39.00 g; SGR 1.30%/day) compared to treatment B (18.00 g; 0.60%/day) and A (6.60 g; 0.22%/day). Proximate analysis indicated an increase in protein (36.42%) and ash content (12.35%) in the formulation containing gonggong shell meal. The survival rate remained high across treatments (A = 100%, B = 87%, C = 93%), while no individuals underwent molting during the study period. In conclusion, the supplementation of 10% maggot meal and 3% gonggong shell meal effectively improved the growth performance of S. serrata but was not sufficient to stimulate molting.

Abstract

The starter system is a vital component in the main engine starting process on a ship, so its reliability is an important factor in ensuring smooth sailing operations. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of implementing preventive maintenance in improving the performance of the main engine starter system on a passenger ship. The study was conducted on the XYZ ship using a descriptive method through direct observation and interviews with the engineer officer. Data obtained included the physical condition of the battery, cable path, solenoid, and internal components of the starter dynamo, then analyzed based on performance parameters before and after preventive maintenance. The results showed several major problems, including heavy starter rotation, rapid battery voltage drop, loose cable connections, and damage to the solenoid. After implementing preventive maintenance such as adding battery water, cleaning terminals, tightening cable connections, and internal maintenance of the starter, there was a significant increase in engine starting speed, battery voltage stability, and starter response. The frequency of previously frequent problems also decreased drastically. The conclusion of this study is that preventive maintenance is proven to be effective in improving starter system performance, reducing the risk of starting failure, and supporting the smooth and safe operation of the ship as a whole. Implementation of scheduled preventive maintenance is recommended to ensure long-term reliability of the starter system.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze business income, profit-sharing systems, and the income of payang fishermen at the Nusantara Fisheries Port (PPN) Palabuhanratu, Sukabumi Regency. The research employs a quantitative descriptive method involving 17 payang fishing boats as samples chosen through random sampling. Primary data were collected via structured interviews, while secondary data came from official documents of PPN Palabuhanratu. The results reveal that the average net income per trip during the off-season, moderate, and peak seasons were IDR 3,500,440, IDR 4,310,359, and IDR 4,130,308, respectively. The profit-sharing system applied is a 2:1 distribution, with two parts for the boat owner and one part for the fishermen, plus an additional 5% for the helmsman. The boat owners earn between IDR 28–61 million per month, helmsmen earn IDR 3.5–7.7 million, and crew members earn IDR 1.2–2.7 million monthly. Compared to the 2024 Sukabumi minimum wage of IDR 3,351,883, only helmsmen during the moderate and peak seasons earn above the standard, while the crew members remain below the minimum wage across all seasons. Factors affecting fishermen’s income include season conditions, number of trips, catch volume, fish prices, and profit-sharing patterns. These findings indicate that the income of payang fishermen remains seasonal and unstable, especially for crew members, necessitating policy efforts to improve their welfare.

Abstract

The success of tilapia farming is strongly influenced by the productivity it produces, but it often happens that the productivity of tilapia produced by farmers is very low. The purpose of the study was to analyze the factors that affect the productivity of tilapia and its effect on the farmers' profit. The parameters measured include stocking density (X1), feed protein content (X2), pond area (X3), length of maintenance (X4), productivity (Y), and profit (Z). There were 40 respondents from Selomerto Sub-district, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java Province. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22 and pathway analysis. The results of the study indicate that X1, X3, and X4 have a significant effect on Y, while X2 has no effect on Y. Furthermore, X3 and Y have a significant effect on Z, while X1, X2, and X4 have no effect on Z. X1, through Y, has an effect on Z, while X2, X3, and X4, through Y, have no effect on Z. The research data is expected to provide meaningful information to various parties in improving the success of tilapia farming activities carried out by farmers.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of striped catfish that have genetic variations and genetic relationships among the test striped catfish. Samples of sutchi catfish (P. hypophthalmus) and hybrid P. hyphophthalmus X P. djambal were obtained from Cijengkol and Subang, West Java. P. djambal from Cirata, P. gigas and P. sanitwongsei from ornamental fish shops in Jakarta. The source of genomic DNA was obtained from small pieces of the combined five caudal fins of each test striped catfish sample. Based on the results of amplification using OPA-2 and OPA-3 primers, genetic variations interpreted with the highest number of polymorphic fragments were found in P. sanitwongsei (3 fragments), P. gigas (2 fragments), hybrid P. hyphophthalmus X P. djambal (2 fragments) and P. djambal (1 fragment), respectively. The results of the NTSYS (Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis System) program analysis of the OPA-2 and OPA-3 primer amplicons show that the genetic relationship between P. hyphophthalmus, P. djambal, and the hybrid of P. hyphophthalmus X P. djambal and P. sanitwongsei is relatively close (similarity index 71.30%) based on OPA-2 and 55.9% (based on OPA-3). Otherwise, P. gigas is relatively distant (similarity index 44%) based on the OPA-2 primer and 50% (based on the OPA-3 primer). The OPA-2 and OPA-3 primers can be used to detect polymorphisms of striped catfish species.
