Abstract

ABSTRACT       The objectives of this research were discovered the kinds of maxims and the dominant maxim; to explain the implication of the dominant maxim and to describe the context of situation in OZ: the Great and Powerful Movie. This research was done on OZ’s utterances because he is the only main character. There were 38 of violated maxims gathered as the data for this research. The descriptive qualitative design was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis showed that all kinds of maxims were violated: 18 utterances violated maxim of quantity (48%), 2 utterances violated maxim of qualiy (6%), 12 utterances violated maxim of relation (13%), and 6 utterances violated maxim of manner (13). The maxim of quantity is the dominant kind of maxims that was violated by OZ. The implication of this violated maxim is the main character has worried about his life story and he try to covered his truthfull and tricky. The context of situation of this violated maxim is the main character who cannot hide his true story from his friends   Keyword: pragmatics, movie, violated maxim

Abstract

This study dealt with Question Word in English and North Aceh Dialect of Acehnese. The objectives of the study were to investigate the similarities, differences, and implication of question words in English and Acehnese by using Paul’s theory. This study was conducted by using descriptive library research. The data of this study were taken from some books of English and Acehnese grammatical structure. For collecting data, this study used the method of contrastive analysis. The findings showed that there were five similarities and seven differences based on form and function. Question word in English and Acehnese were partly-correspondences in terms of form. There were the question word in both languages can be placed at the beginning of question, while Acehnese question word can be placed in the middle of question after added a based word /tu-/ that can produce a new question word. In term of function, Question word in English and Acehnese were partly-correspondences because both languages were asking about informations, while in English there were two question words that can change the basic function after added the word “about”.Keywords: Question Word, English, North Aceh Dialect, Acehnese.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Marxism conception towards the aspect of Marxism. Thedata were taken from the sentences or text produced in Twelve Years A Slavenovel of Solomon Northup in 1853 which has 199 pages. Particular attention isgiven to the concerning aspects of Marxism, as defined by Wood (2003). Thefocuses of the paper are to find out the aspects of Marxism in Twelve Years ASlave novel of Solomon Northup and also describe how Marxism are portrayed inthe novel based on the aspects. The results of the study are stated as follows: Theaspects of Marxism occurred are: Dialectical Materialism, Social Alienation,Exploitation of Class, and Economic Determinism. Then the aspects of Marxismfound in the novel of Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup are portrayedthrough the difficulties of exploited and unfair treatment of being lower class.

Abstract

One aim of this article is to show through a concrete example how metaphors used in advertisement. The illustrative example is taken from the Cosmopolitan magazine. Central to the analysis of proper meanings of advertisement are the journalistic practices that contain the production of metaphor; i.e. the symbols, the words, or color of different values. Ten advertisements were interpreted by 103 students, and it was found that the use of symbols outnumbered the words, particularly those symbolized the nature. Keywords: advertisement; metaphor

Abstract

This study deals with ellipsis in Ocean’s Eleven movie. The objectives of this studyare to describe the types of ellipsis and the cause of ellipsis within the movie. themethod of research is library research by reading some books related to this study.The data of this research are divided into 2, the data for research problem no. 1 aretaken from conversation that have been chosen from some scenes and the data forresearch problem no. 2 are taken from transcript of characters of different profession(robbers and entrepreneurs). The technique of analyzing data is documentarytechnique, for research problem no. 1 the techniques are identifying the data,classifying the data and counting the occurrence of ellipsis and for research problemno.2 the techniques are identifying the data, counting the number of ellipsis by eachprofession and finding out the cause of ellipsis. The findings of research problemno.1 showed that the three types of ellipsis are used in the movie namely: (1).Nominal ellipsis (34.8%), (2). Verbal ellipsis (2.2%), (3). Clausal ellipsis (63,0%).The findings of research problem no.2 showed that the use of ellipsis by the robbersis about (64%) and the entrepreneur is about (36%). By this finding can be concludedthat ellipsis can be caused by one’s profession related to the purpose.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This article deals with types of process in Pitbull’s song lyrics. The objectives of this article is to find the types of process in Pitbull’s song lyrics, the dominant process in Pitbull’s song lyrics, and to investigate the implication of dominant process with hedonictics life style. Fiftheen songs were taken as the data and analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. The findings of this article showed that six types of process are found in the Pitbull’s song lyrics. The most dominant process was mental process, it implied that the songs lyrics in Pitbull’s song expressed hedonistics life style which are dealing with the process of sensing which covering thinking, feeling, and emotions which happened inside human beings.   Keywords: process, song, Pitbull, descriptive qualitative, hedonistics

Abstract

The research was focused on racial discrimination faced by the major characters and their resistances in 12 Years A Slave novel. This study was aimed This study was aimed to investigate the racial disrimination and the resistances in the novel. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from 12 Years A Slave novel. The data are collected by using documentary techniques. Instrument for collecting the data is using documentary sheet. The results of this research were the racial discrimination and resistances happened in 12 Years A Slave. The racial discrimination in this novel happened towards the Black People and all discriminated people do the resistances to make their life better. As Northup is the main character so he got the most discrimination, then in the second position is Patsey and the last is Eliza Berry. Meanwhile the resistances done the most by Northup until he finally got freedom, and Patsey also did it twice and Eliza Berry did it three times. It can be concluded that the three major character who are slaves got discriminated and they did the resistances to save their life, even its only Northup who got the freedom in the end.

Abstract

The research was focused on the topic about Women’s attitudes toward gender discrimination they face in the movie with title ‘7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita’. This study was aimed at identify the kinds of gender discrimination faced in the movie and the attitudes of women towards gender discrimination they face in the movie. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from 7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita (2010) script movie. The data are collected by using documentary technique. Instrument for collecting the data is using documentary sheet. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research. The results of this research was types of genders discriminatio can found in the movie are Marginalization, Subordination, Stereotype, Violence and Workload. The women’s attitudes toward five kinds of gender discrimination they face are different based on the type of attitudes, they are Cognitive responses, Affective responses and Conative responses.Keywords: Gender Discrimination, Attitudes, Movie.

Abstract

The study deals with the function of swearing in Donaldtrump’sutterances during the presidentialdebate. In this study, the researcher focuses onthe typesand the functionsof swearing inDonald Trump’s utterances during the presidential debate.The research used the descriptive qualitative method.The data were taken from video’s transcript ofAmerica presidential debate in 2016. There were three video’s transcript used as the sample, they were first presidential debate broadcasted on September 26th,2016, second presidential debate broadcasted on October 9th, 2016 and third presidential debate broadcasted on October 19th, 2016.Based on the analysis of data, the findings said that there were five types of swearing in Donald Trump’s utterances during a presidential debate in 2016 namely politic term, religious matter, death term, animal term, and sex or copulative term.However, there were three functions of swearing in Donald trump’s utterances during a presidential debate in 2016 namely descriptive swearing, abusive swearing, and idiomatic swearing. Keywords:Swearing, Taboo words, Sociological Approach, US presidential debate in 2016, Donald Trump

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out signs, the realization of signs in to denotative and connotative meanings, and the reasons for signs realization on Tugu Si Raja Batak in Sarimarrihit Village, Sianjur Mula-Mula sub-district, Samosir Regency. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The data of this study were taken from Tugu Si Raja Batak. The data of the study were statues and pictures on Tugu Si Raja Batak. The data analysis was taken by observing, interviewing, and then analyzed the data based on the theory proposed by Roland Barthes. The findings indicated that there were twenty-two signs on Tugu Si Raja Batak in four forms, namely human ornaments, animal ornaments, plant ornaments, and carving. The signs of human ornaments were the Si Raja Batak means descendants with different clans and some servants for different work. The signs of animal ornaments made to show that Si Raja Batak and his descendants used the animals around him as transportations. Then, the plant ornaments they were Lime (Pangir) and Banyan tree (Jajabi) appear because the Batak people are famous for traditional medicine that uses plants such as Lime (Pangir) and betel as medicine for sick people, possessed people, and also for offerings to their ancestors. Furthermore, in the Tugu Si Raja Batak, carvings made because the Si Raja Batak seat requires beautiful decoration and their culture to respect the kings
