Abstract

ABSTRACT       The objectives of this research were discovered the kinds of maxims and the dominant maxim; to explain the implication of the dominant maxim and to describe the context of situation in OZ: the Great and Powerful Movie. This research was done on OZ’s utterances because he is the only main character. There were 38 of violated maxims gathered as the data for this research. The descriptive qualitative design was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis showed that all kinds of maxims were violated: 18 utterances violated maxim of quantity (48%), 2 utterances violated maxim of qualiy (6%), 12 utterances violated maxim of relation (13%), and 6 utterances violated maxim of manner (13). The maxim of quantity is the dominant kind of maxims that was violated by OZ. The implication of this violated maxim is the main character has worried about his life story and he try to covered his truthfull and tricky. The context of situation of this violated maxim is the main character who cannot hide his true story from his friends   Keyword: pragmatics, movie, violated maxim

Abstract

Principally this research attempts to find out the symbols and reasons displayed in Medya Hus’s Poems in Acehnese. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were the poems in ‘Jameun Internet’ book by Medya Hus in Acehnese. The instrument for collecting data are documentary sheet. The data were analyzed by using Pierce’s theory of semiotic. The writer found 22 meanings were displayed in the Medya Hus’s poems. They were Aki wèt-wèt (3,33%), Budôk (3,33), Engkôut (3,33%), Ujeuen (3,33), Zakéut (3,33%), Teukabo (3,33%), Kayèe Syuruga (3,33%), Syuruga Lapan (3,33%), ‘Arasy (3,33%), Rabôn (3,33%), Qur’an ngon Hadis (3,33%), Nuraka (3,33%), Agama (20%), Lampu (3,33), Bohaté (3,33%), Mata Beungah (3,33%), Kapai (3,33%), Syèthan (3,33%), Ratéb (6,7%), Syuruga (10%), Tasbèh (3,33%), Taqwa (3,33%). In the poems contain of different symbols and meaning. Medya Hus almost used the symbols that related to Islamic concept to show the roles of Islam in Aceh and explained the Acehnese culture and society, and nature.Keywords: Acehnese Poems, Medya Hus’s Poems, Pierce’s Theory, Symbolic, Semiotic,

Abstract

This study was deal with linguistic expression, in semiotics of ulos in wedding ceremony of batak toba. This research used qualitative method which concerned with developing explanations of experience or on data. The source of the data was taken from the ulos in wedding ceremony of batak toba, and relevant with the transcript of interviewing by three informants with some criterias, that is the most dominant population in three different surename in Tarutung, at the age of 45 to 55 years old and have the recognition from each surename. The instruments that is used in this study was tape recorder, camera, and also the book which relevant to the data. In technique of analyzing data, descriptive qualitative data analysis stage is identifying the ornament, reducing the ornament which are not relevant, classifying, interpreting, analyzing and concluding the findings. There are three kinds of ulos used in wedding ceremony of Batak Toba, they are ulos ragidup, ulos ragihotang, and ulos sadum. Each ulos have topi sokkar which explain that everything in this world have the limit and the color depend to the ceremony that is performed. In ulos ragidup, there are hatir symbolized of wealth, sigumang symbolized the hope of the giver of this ulos for the receiver to works right and efficient also, batu ni ansimun symbolizing the health, sisik ni ikan symbolizing a good life, tidy life, even in a crowded of life, and also jungkit symbolizing in having an organized life well. In ulos ragihotang there are unok-unok, symbolized be a wise person like the humus, and jungkit. In ulos sadum, there is torna where this symbol to remind the people that Batak people come from mountain.

Abstract

The study deals with the code mixing in HitamPutih Talk Show Program on Trans 7.The objectives of study were to identify the types of code mixing used, to find out themost dominant type of code mixing used, and to describe the reasons of the codemixing used in the talk show. The data consisted of three episodes of HitamPutihTalk Show on April – October 2014. The findings show that there were 116insertions (32, 86%), 149 alternations (42, 2%), 88 congruent lexicalizations (24,92%). The most dominant type of code mixing was alternation becausethe host oftenclarified the guest’s statement to make the audience more understand what the guestsaid before, so they combined their speech with other language.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts Improving The Students’ Achievement In Writing Descriptive Paragraphs By Applying  Think-Talk-Write Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 1 SMA PARULIAN 1 Medan that consists of 28 students. The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test which shows that the range of students who got score 75 to up is 92.85% and qualitatively from interview sheets, diary notes and observation sheets. Based on the diary notes, observation sheets and interview sheets, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic and interested in writing. The result of research showed that the Think-talk-write Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. It is suggested that teachers should use Think-talk-write strategy to improving students’ writing especially in writing descriptive paragraph. Abstract

The study deals with the types of logico-semantic relations in Mendez’utterances in Argo. The objective of the study are to describe the types of logico semantic relations used in Mendez’ utterances and expalain how logico-semantic relations (unmarked and marked)  used in Mendez’ utterances. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data of the study were clause complexes found in Mendez’ utterances. There were 63 clause complexes found. Based on the analysis, it was found that only seven of ten types of logico-semantic relations were used in Mendez’ utterances. The logico-semantic relation type which dominantly occurs in Mendez’ utterances is unmarked enhancement (24 utterances, 38.09%). Then it’s followed unmarked extension (17 utterances, 26.98%), unmarked elaboration (11 utterances, 17.46%), marked enhancement (5 utterances,7.93%),  marked locution ( 3 utterances, 4.76%), unmarked locution (2 utterances 3.17%), marked ectension (1 utterance, 1.58%). Meanwhile marked elaboration, unmarked idea and marked idea were not found in Mendez’utterances. Keywords : Logico-semantic relations, utterances

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal and explain politeness in using simalungunese personal subject pronouns by trying to find out the type mostly used, the way and the reason of people in Galang City using it. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken 35 people of Galang City as respondent/participant. The data was collected by using questionnaire paper. The findings of this study showed that Simalungunese Personal Subject Pronouns people in Galang City mostly used were First Personal Subject Pronouns Ahu/au with 130 times chosen (46%), Second Personal Subject Pronouns Ham/Handian/Nassiam with 159 times chosen  (57%), Third Personal Subject Pronouns Ia/Sidea with 128 times chosen (46%). The ways of people in Galang City using Simalungunese Personal Subject determine by gender, Situation, Age, and Familiarity. The reason of people in Galang city using Simalungunese personal subject pronouns were making no distance/gap, adapting the situation, knowing the rule of communication, learning from family. The findings of this study revealed that four parameters of politeness influenced chosen of pronouns, and the use of Simalungunese Personal Subject pronouns itself influenced the level of politeness. Keywords : Politeness , Simalungunese , Personal Pronouns

Abstract

The study was deal with the types of conversational implicature occur in the utterances of all of the characters in The Interview Movie. The objectives of the study were to identify and classify the types of conversational implicature and explain the reason why it becomes the dominant type that occur in the movie. The data was analyzed by identifying the utterances found in the movie script. The findings shows that the two types of conversational implicature were occurred in the movie. The characters conveyed an implicit meaning when giving statement or opinion or information and answering the question in their conversation based on the truth condition or facts in the movie so that the viewers can draw assumption from the implicit meaning of the utterances all the characters.

Abstract

The study deals with the types of speech function used in the withdrawal speechof Prabowo-Hatta on the Indonesia presidential election 2014-2019. Theobjectives of this research were to find out the types of speech function and todescribe the implication of the most dominant type of speech function. Thisresearch was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were 55clauses taken from the withdrawal speech of Prabowo-Hatta on the Indonesiapresidential election 2014-2019 which were collected by applying documentarytechnique. The three types of speech function occurred in this speech, namelystatement (87,3%) , offer (1,8%), and command (10,9%). The most dominant typeof speech function was statement. The implication of using statement dominantlywas Prabowo-Hatta can declare all of aspects that they consider as their evidencesthat to prove their argumentation to withdraw from Indonesia presidential election2014-2019. The dominant statement also made more powerful speech to influencethe public opinion that will realize Prabowo-Hatta has already known about theincident occurred in Indonesia Presidential Election 2014-2019. It can beillustrated through the use of statement by Prabowo-Hatta that is in a practiceconsidered as a representative of a power to state a strong degree of certainty.
