Abstract

Language is dynamic and reflective of societal changes, with Gen-Z, the first true digital natives, playing a pivotal role in linguistic evolution. This study examines the phenomenon of word formation through compounding in Gen-Z slang on TikTok, exploring its linguistic structures and meanings. By analyzing the common compounding patterns in Gen-Z slang, we gain insights into the creative processes and social influences shaping language use among this demographic. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data was collected from TikTok videos and comments between January 2023 and May 2024. The findings reveal 15 distinct compound words, with compound nouns being the most prevalent, followed by compound verbs and compound adjectives. Endocentric compounds were more common than exocentric ones. This research highlights the innovative nature of language within Generation Z, reflecting their values of self-expression, technological engagement, and creative problem-solving. The study underscores the role of social media in shaping contemporary language and provides a foundation for further exploration of linguistic innovations and their implications for language development and cultural expression in the digital age.

Abstract

This study examines the application of genre patterns in the "Results and Discussion" section of scientific articles written by lecturers at Universitas Tidar using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. Through qualitative analysis, this study identifies five main genres—descriptive, expository, prescriptive, analytical, and argumentative—that are used strategically to improve clarity, coherence, and effectiveness of communication in scientific writing. Each genre is analyzed based on its linguistic features and its contribution to fulfilling the ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions in the IMRD structure. The results of the study indicate the important role of knowledge about genres in improving the quality of academic writing, especially in conveying complex ideas, establishing credibility, and ensuring a logical flow of information. This study emphasizes the importance of implementing a genre-based approach in teaching academic writing to help students and researchers produce well-structured and impactful scientific papers. By bridging linguistic theory and practical writing strategies, this study contributes to the development of genre literacy and academic communication skills.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to know about how the students’ reading comprehension can be improve by using pre questioning method at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Mangoli. In fact, based on the result of pre observation, the students of SMP Negeri 1 Mangoli  have some problems in reading. They got lacks in vocabulary mastery, missed understanding, and they still translate word by word. The setting of this research was SMP Negeri 1 Mangoli. It consist six classes, each classes consist of 22 students. So the total number of population are 138 students. The subject of this research were the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Mangoli, they were 22 students. this research used classroom action research. Based on the result of the implementation of pre questioning technique to improve students’ reading comprehension in the second grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Mangoli, the researcher concluded that the use of pre questioning technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension. The students’ result in cycle I, it was showed that just 5 students reach the result were success or in other word just 5 of 22 students pass the passing grade (70). While there were 17 of 22 students got the score under the passing grade. While, the students’ result in cycle II, there were 20 of 22 students  reached the result were success or in other word 20 students pass the passing grade (70). While just two students got the score under the passing grade.

Abstract

This research examines ideological constructions within Donald Trump's address to the 2025 World Economic Forum through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), utilizing Teun A. Van Dijk's Ideological Square framework (2011) alongside his 25 ideological discourse categories (2006). Analysis reveals Trump's speech employs strategic polarization, predominantly through positive in-group emphasis (63%) and negative out-group emphasis (27%), while minimizing in-group weaknesses (7%) and out-group strengths (3%). Qualitative textual examination uncovers prevalent deployment of rhetorical mechanisms including exaggeration, nationalistic valorization, and value-based assertions that construct a nationalist-populist discourse. Results indicate Trump's administration is discursively positioned as a revolutionary catalyst for American and global transformation, contrasted against portrayed inadequacies of prior leadership and international entities. Through analyzing these linguistic strategies, this research illuminates how political communication functions as an instrument for ideological construction and authority consolidation. This investigation enhances scholarly understanding of political rhetoric within international economic platforms, particularly regarding intersections of economic strategy, nationalism, and ideological division in constructing public consciousness and diplomatic relations.

Abstract

Listening is a difficult basic skill to learn a second language because things like bad classroom environment, student with different language abilities, and limited vocabulary can make it harder. This study examines the impact of the Auditory, Intellectual, and Repetition (AIR) learning model on the listening skills of eighth-grade students at a private junior high school in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Due to research ethics, we can refer to the school by its initials, SMP AH. This study employed a quasi-experimental design, comprising two classes: one experimental class: 8 Thariq, n=25; and one control class: 8 Usamah, n=25, both recruited using cluster random sampling techniques from the population of eighth-grade students at SMP AH. Data for the research were gathered by multiple-choice pre-test and post-test. The study’s finding demonstrated a significant improvement in listening skills within the experimental group, as indicated by a two-sided significance value of 0.018 (< α = 0.05). This result rejects the null hypothesis and confirms the effectiveness of the AIR model. The results of this study demonstrate that the AIR model can enhance listening abilities in EFL contexts, providing valuable insights for teachers and educators. Subsequent research ought to investigate the long-term impact of employing the AIR model and utilize larger samples. Abstract

This study investigates how solitude is signified in the lyrics of Orgasme dengan Sepeda by TheKick through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. Specifically, it maps signs that represent health, hedonism, and social recognition; explains the syntagmatic–paradigmatic relations that generate irony; and interprets the cultural implications of these representations. The method applies Barthes’ three layers of meaning—denotation, connotation, and myth—to lyric data. The findings indicate that solitude does not appear literally but emerges as a paradox between a healthy image and consumptive practice. The sign “bicycle” shifts from a symbol of fitness to a representation of social status and self-performance in digital media. Interrelations among signs produce the irony that efforts to appear healthy and trendi in fact intensify existential loneliness. The study concludes that solitude in Indonesian popular culture arises from consumerist orientations and the pursuit of social validation, rather than from physical separation. These results extend cultural semiotics by showing that the myth of consumption also operates through performative lifestyle activities and musical expression.

Abstract

This study investigates how anxiety and defense mechanisms are reflected in Being Unhappy Is a Choice, a poetry anthology by Adi K, using Freud’s psychoanalytic theory as the analytical framework. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method to identify and interpret psychological aspects represented in selected poems. The analysis reveals that the anthology portrays three types of anxiety: reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. These anxieties are expressed through themes of fear, inner conflict, guilt, and self-doubt. In response to these anxieties, the poems demonstrate the use of defense mechanisms such as rationalization, sublimation, reaction formation, and introjection. The findings suggest that Adi K’s poetry not only conveys individual struggles but also illustrates how hidden fears and emotional pain can be transformed into creative expression. By combining literary and psychological perspectives, this research highlights how poetry serves as both an outlet for unconscious conflict and a medium for readers to reflect on their own emotional experiences. The study contributes to the field of literary psychology by expanding psychoanalytic analysis into contemporary Indonesian poetry, offering new insights into the intersection of literature, mental health, and human resilience. Abstract

This study aims to analyze euphemisms in Jordan Klepper's monologues on The Daily Show YouTube Channel using a semantic approach. This study analyzed transcripts from ten episodes broadcast between January and June 2025. The analysis process was carried out using a textual approach according to Smith (2017), and referring to the theory of types of euphemisms by Allan & Burridge (1991) and the theory of euphemism functions by Burridge (2012). The research found 34 euphemisms, divided into seven types. The most common type was "understatement," at 26.5%, followed by "flippancy" at 23.5%, and "figurative expression" at 17.6%.Based on their function, ludic euphemisms appeared most dominant (50%), followed by provocative functions (29.4%). Meanwhile, no euphemisms were found to function coherently. These findings suggest that Klepper's use of euphemisms not only serves to soften speech but also serves as a semantic strategy to convey humor, provoke critical reflection, and strengthen the effectiveness of satirical communication in digital media.
