Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Effective Microorganisms 4 (EM4) on the decomposition time and quality of compost made from household kitchen waste using a closed composting system. The research was conducted over 28 days at the researcher's home in Ahedano Village, Idanogawo Subdistrict, Nias Regency, using simple tools and materials. Three treatments were applied: no EM4 (control), 1% EM4, and 3% EM4 based on the weight of the organic waste. The kitchen waste consisted of vegetable scraps, fruit peels, and leftover food, which were chopped and composted in closed plastic buckets. Observed parameters included color changes, temperature, pH, texture, and compost odor. The results showed that EM4, especially at the 3% dosage, significantly accelerated decomposition and improved compost quality. The 3% EM4 treatment produced dark brown compost more quickly, reached a higher peak temperature (±44°C), stabilized pH near neutral (±7.5), and resulted in a finer texture with an earthy smell. In contrast, the control treatment decomposed more slowly and produced compost with a coarser texture and a stronger fermentation odor. In conclusion, the use of EM4 in simple home composting effectively accelerates the decomposition process and enhances compost quality. This method is suitable for household-scale organic waste management and supports the production of natural fertilizer in a practical, low-cost way.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the potential of shallot (Allium cepa var. aggregatum) extract as a natural plant growth regulator (PGR) on the germination process of bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The experimental research involved four treatments of shallot extract concentrations: 0% (control), 25%, 50%, and 75%, each using 10 seeds observed over 7 days. The results showed that shallot extract significantly influenced the increase in germinated seeds. The 50% and 75% treatments produced the highest germination rates, reaching 100%, compared to only 70% in the control group. The presence of natural hormones such as auxins and gibberellins in shallots is suspected to accelerate seed physiological activity. Therefore, shallot extract has the potential to serve as an eco-friendly natural alternative to synthetic plant growth regulators in supporting early plant development.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of different planting distances on the growth and yield of banana plants in open fields. The research was conducted experimentally using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four spacing treatments: 2 x 2 m, 2.5 x 2.5 m, 3 x 3 m, and 3.5 x 3.5 m, each repeated four times. Observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, number of bunches, bunch weight, and number of fruits per bunch. The results showed that planting distance significantly affected banana plant growth and yield. The 3 x 3 m spacing treatment produced the best vegetative growth and the highest yield compared to the other treatments. Therefore, a 3 x 3 m spacing is recommended for banana cultivation in open fields to achieve optimal results.

Abstract

Seed soaking is one of the pre-planting treatments aimed at improving germination rate and accelerating plant growth. This study aims to evaluate the effect of soaking duration on the germination process of corn (Zea mays) seeds. The method used in this research was a completely randomized design (CRD) with four soaking duration treatments: 0 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours, each repeated three times. The observed parameters included germination rate, growth speed, and seedling length. The results of this study indicated that soaking duration had a significant effect on the germination rate and early growth of corn seeds. The 12-hour soaking treatment produced the most optimal results, with the highest germination rate and the best seedling growth.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of red onion slices on the acceleration of corn seed germination (Zea mays L.). Red onions are known to contain natural phytohormones such as auxin and gibberellin, which can stimulate germination. The research was conducted experimentally with two treatments: corn seeds soaked in water from red onion slices and a control group without treatment. The results showed that seeds treated with red onion water germinated faster, had a higher germination rate, and longer seedling length compared to the control. This indicates that red onion has potential as a natural growth stimulant in corn cultivation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of light intensity on the photosynthetic rate and growth of spinach plants (Amaranthus sp.). The research was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one treatment factor: light intensity consisting of four levels—100% (P1), 75% (P2), 50% (P3), and 25% (P4) of natural sunlight. Observed parameters included photosynthetic rate, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight. The results showed that light intensity significantly affected all observed variables. The highest photosynthetic rate (18.5 μmol CO₂/m²/s), plant height (22.4 cm), number of leaves (18), fresh weight (35.2 g), and dry weight (5.7 g) were obtained under full sunlight (P1). In contrast, the lowest values were recorded under 25% light intensity (P4). It can be concluded that higher light intensity enhances photosynthetic activity and vegetative growth of spinach plants significantly. Therefore, managing appropriate light levels is crucial for optimal spinach cultivation, especially in controlled or indoor farming systems.

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the most important sectors in the Indonesian economy. However, agricultural production in Indonesia still faces various challenges, such as low productivity and lack of efficiency. One way to increase the efficiency of agricultural production is to carry out accurate measurements of agricultural land. This research aims to develop an accurate and efficient method for measuring agricultural land. The research results show that the developed agricultural land measurement method can increase agricultural production efficiency by 25%. Therefore, this research can be a reference for farmers and the government in increasing the efficiency of agricultural production.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of shallot (Allium ascalonicum) sliced water on the quality of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seed germination. The study was conducted with two treatments, namely seeds soaked in plain water (control) and seeds soaked in shallot sliced water for 8 hours. The results showed that seeds soaked in shallot water had a better germination percentage, growth rate, and root and shoot length than the control. Shallot sliced water has been proven to contain natural growth stimulants that can improve the quality of seed germination organically.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of rice washing water on the growth of water spinach (Ipomoea reptans). Water spinach is a fast-growing leafy vegetable that is widely consumed by the Indonesian population. Rice washing water is a household waste that contains essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamin B, which can be utilized to fertilize plants. The study was conducted over five days by watering water spinach plants daily using rice washing water. The results showed that water spinach watered with rice washing water grew faster compared to normal conditions, reaching a height of 6 cm on the fifth day. This indicates that rice washing water has a positive effect on plant growth.

Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of using organic pesticides in controlling pests on vegetable crops. The use of organic pesticides is increasingly popular as an environmentally friendly alternative compared to synthetic pesticides, which can damage ecosystems. In this study, the organic pesticides tested were derived from natural materials such as plant extracts and microorganisms. The research was conducted on agricultural land planted with various types of vegetables, such as tomatoes, mustard greens, and eggplants. The results showed that organic pesticides significantly reduced pest populations without decreasing crop yields. Additionally, the use of organic pesticides did not have a negative impact on soil and water quality around the plants. Thus, the use of organic pesticides can be an effective and sustainable solution for pest control in vegetable crops.
