Abstract

The farmer regeneration crisis in Indonesia poses a significant challenge to the sustainability of the national agricultural sector. The increasing average age of farmers and the declining interest of young generations in farming highlight the need for strategic interventions through the education sector. This study aims to explore the integration of agricultural curriculum in secondary schools as a means to build students’ interest and involvement in agriculture. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis at several secondary schools in agrarian regions. The results indicate that integrated, contextual, and practice-based agricultural education programs can enhance students' understanding and motivation toward the agricultural sector. However, implementation remains hindered by limited resources, lack of teacher training, and weak policy support. Cross-sector collaboration and the utilization of flexible curriculum spaces, such as local content subjects and Pancasila student projects, emerge as promising strategies. Integrating agricultural curricula in secondary education is considered a critical step in promoting youth farmer regeneration and strengthening sustainable national food security.

Abstract

Climate change poses a major challenge to the agricultural sector, particularly affecting cropping patterns and crop productivity. This study aims to examine the impact of climate change on cropping patterns and agricultural productivity, as well as to identify adaptation strategies employed by farmers. The methods used include field surveys, statistical analysis, in-depth interviews, and climate-agronomy modeling using DSSAT. The results indicate a shift in cropping patterns due to uncertain rainy seasons and a decline in rice and maize productivity caused by rising temperatures and changes in rainfall. Adaptation strategies implemented include adjustments in planting schedules, use of climate-resilient crop varieties, and crop diversification, although limited by access to technology and resources. Modeling simulations highlight the need for effective adaptation interventions to prevent future yield declines. This study provides recommendations for policy and technological development to enhance agricultural resilience to climate change.

Abstract

The welfare of farmers remains a central issue in Indonesia’s agricultural development. This study aims to examine diversification of agricultural products as a strategic approach to enhance farmers' economic resilience and improve their livelihoods. Using a qualitative case study method, data were collected through interviews, field observations, and focus group discussions in two agricultural regions: Kulon Progo and Karanganyar. The results show that most farmers have implemented horizontal and vertical diversification, including the cultivation of various horticultural crops and the processing of raw products into higher-value goods. This diversification has led to increased income, the creation of rural employment opportunities, and strengthened community resilience. However, challenges such as limited access to capital, market constraints, and inadequate institutional support persist. The study concludes that effective diversification requires integrated support from local institutions, government policies, and community-based initiatives to ensure sustainable agricultural development and farmer welfare.

Abstract

Silkworms (Tubifex sp.) are one of the leading natural feeds that are rich in protein, essential amino acids, and fats, and have a body size suitable for consumption by fish larvae. However, its limited availability and fluctuating quality are challenges in fish hatchery activities. This study aims to optimize the direct cultivation of silk worms in tarpaulin ponds with a field experiment approach, in order to increase the quantity as natural feed. The research was conducted at Ceria Group, Tugalagawu Village, Sirombu Sub-district, West Nias Regency, from May 27 to June 15, 2025. The methods used included the use of mud media enriched with organic materials such as bran and tofu pulp, and fermentation with EM4 to increase nutrient availability. Environmental parameters such as temperature (26-28°C) and pH (6.8-7.2) were controlled during the rearing period. The results showed that organic fermentation media was able to increase worm biomass to 80-120 g/m² with a harvest efficiency of 75%. The worms produced had visual quality and nutritional content suitable as larval feed, with potential protein content of 55-60% and fat content of 13-15%. This study concludes that local fermentation-based cultivation techniques can increase the efficiency of silk worm production while supporting natural food self-sufficiency at the coastal community level.

Abstract

Cultivation of silk worms (Tubifex sp.) is one of the important components in supporting the aquaculture sector, especially as a natural food for larval and fry fish. This study aims to assess the differences in the growth of silk worms fed with feed made from organic waste in the form of papaya residue and fermented feed made from tofu pulp, bran, sugar, brown sugar, and EM4. The study used an experimental method with a complete randomized design (CRD) consisting of two treatments, each with three replicates. Parameters observed included silk worm biomass growth, feed conversion efficiency, survival rate, and feed residue left in the media. The results showed that feeding papaya waste provided faster growth and body division of silk worms compared to fermented feed. In addition, the media fed with papaya feed showed lower levels of feed residue, resulting in a more stable culture medium with low ammonia levels. In contrast, the fermented feed left white granules that were difficult to decompose and became a source of ammonia accumulation. Thus, papaya waste feed is more recommended in the environmentally friendly and efficient cultivation of silk worms.

Abstract

A legume crop with strategic importance in meeting national food needs, groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) have the ability to be grown in arid regions. However, boosting this crop's output is hampered by low rainfall and soil fertility. This study uses a literature review technique to scientific journals for the 2021–2025 period in order to determine the impact of planting distance and organic fertilizer dosage on peanut development and yield in drylands. The analysis's findings demonstrate that ideal spacing, like 40 cm by 20 cm or 30 cm by 15 cm, can greatly boost peanut seed output and vegetative growth. Meanwhile, the application of organic fertilizers such as manure and biochar is proven to improve soil physical and chemical properties, increase water retention, and support nutrient absorption by plants. The synergy between proper spacing and organic fertilizer application can increase yields by more than 30%, and support sustainable cultivation systems on marginal land.

Abstract

Coconut water is a natural source of plant growth hormones such as auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins, which have potential as biostimulants in seed germination. This study aimed to examine the effect of coconut water on the germination rate and percentage of large red chili pepper (Capsicum annuum) seeds under limited-space cultivation on a rooftop. The experiment was conducted over 14 days with two treatments: seed soaking in coconut water and plain water (as control), each with three replications of 10 seeds. The results showed that seeds treated with coconut water began germinating on day one and reached 100% germination by day nine. In contrast, seeds soaked in plain water began germinating on day two and reached only 76.67% germination by day fourteen. These findings indicate that coconut water significantly accelerates the onset of germination and improves seed viability. The natural plant growth substances present in coconut water are believed to stimulate physiological processes in seeds, making it an effective, eco-friendly, and accessible biostimulant for small-scale and urban agriculture systems.

Abstract

This research is an experimental study with a qualitative approach aimed at determining the effect of banana peel water concentration on the germination of corn seeds. The study was conducted in Hilimbaeodesolo, Gunungsitoli City, over four days using three different treatments: 25%, 50%, and 100% concentrations of banana peel water, each repeated three times. The seeds were soaked for 36 hours, and observations were made on the emergence of radicles, the number of germinated seeds, and signs of decay. The results showed that the 50% concentration was the most effective treatment, producing healthy sprouts and the highest number of germinated seeds. The 25% concentration showed limited early growth, while the 100% concentration caused the seeds to rot due to excessive fermentation. The study concluded that banana peel water concentration affects germination success, with a balanced concentration (50%) being the most optimal to support early growth. It is recommended to use moderate concentrations and conduct further testing on plant growth after the germination phase.
