Abstract

Swimming is one of the learning materials in physical education that contributes to students' physical fitness, motor development, and self-confidence. However, the effectiveness of swimming instruction is strongly influenced by students' interest and motivation in participating in learning activities. This study aimed to analyze the interest and motivation of fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students toward swimming learning at SD Negeri 106789 Tanjung Gusta in 2024. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design. The participants consisted of 60 students selected using cluster sampling from grades IV, V, and VI. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires measuring students' interest and motivation toward swimming lessons. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. The findings revealed that students' interest in swimming learning was categorized as very good, with an achievement percentage of 94.94%. Meanwhile, students' motivation toward swimming learning was categorized as good, with a percentage of 66.70%. These findings indicate that although students demonstrate a high level of interest, there is still room to improve learning motivation through more engaging instructional strategies, adequate facilities, and varied teaching methods. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to develop innovative learning approaches to maintain students' enthusiasm and improve learning outcomes in physical education, particularly in swimming instruction.

Abstract

Floor gymnastics is an essential component of physical education that develops students' motor skills, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body control. One of the fundamental techniques taught in senior high school is the forward roll. However, many students still experience technical difficulties when performing this movement correctly. This study aimed to analyze the forward roll skills of Grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Hamparan Perak and identify factors contributing to movement errors. The research employed a descriptive quantitative design involving 30 Grade XI students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through direct observation using a validated observation sheet consisting of three assessment aspects: the initial position, movement execution, and final position. The results showed that most students were categorized as Poor (46.7%), while only 13.3% achieved the Very Good category. The most common errors involved incorrect head position, insufficient leg propulsion, improper hand placement, and poor body coordination. These errors were influenced by limited practice opportunities, inadequate understanding of movement techniques, students' fear of injury, insufficient facilities, and limited corrective feedback from teachers. Therefore, improving instructional strategies through demonstrations, repeated practice, and continuous feedback is recommended to enhance students' mastery of forward roll techniques in floor gymnastics learning.

Abstract

Physical fitness is an important component of children's growth and development because it supports daily activities, learning achievement, and overall health. Recently, the decline in children's physical activity due to increased use of digital technology has become a concern among educators. This study aimed to determine the physical fitness level of sixth-grade students at Gajah Mada Private Elementary School, Medan, during the 2024/2025 academic year. The study employed a descriptive quantitative research design using a survey method. Twenty-three sixth-grade students participated in the study. Data were collected using the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test (Tes Kebugaran Jasmani Indonesia/TKJI) for children aged 10–12 years, consisting of five test items: a 40-meter sprint, flexed-arm hang, 30-second sit-up, vertical jump, and 600-meter run. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. The findings indicated that 13 students (56.52%) were classified in the Good category, six students (26.09%) were in the Moderate category, and four students (17.39%) achieved the Very Good category. No students were classified as Poor or Very Poor. These findings indicate that the overall physical fitness level of sixth-grade students at Gajah Mada Private Elementary School is generally good. Schools are encouraged to maintain and improve students' physical fitness through regular physical education, extracurricular sports activities, and healthy lifestyle promotion.

Abstract

Volleyball is one of the compulsory learning materials in physical education that requires students to master basic technical skills, particularly overhead passing. However, many vocational high school students experience difficulties in performing proper overhead passing techniques because of limited coordination, incorrect body positioning, and insufficient repetitive practice. This study aimed to investigate the effect of wall passing practice on improving students' volleyball overhead passing learning outcomes. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection in two cycles. The participants were 36 tenth-grade students of SMKS Muhammadiyah 9 Medan during the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through performance assessment sheets, observation, and documentation. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to evaluate students' learning achievement based on the percentage of classical mastery learning. The findings revealed continuous improvement in students' performance across the research cycles. Initial mastery learning reached only 22.2%, increased to 41.7% in Cycle I, and finally reached 77.8% in Cycle II, exceeding the minimum classical mastery criterion of 70%. The average score also increased from 33.06 during the preliminary observation to 65.56 in Cycle I and 86.67 in Cycle II. The findings indicate that repetitive wall passing practice effectively improves students' technical skills, hand-eye coordination, confidence, and learning achievement in volleyball overhead passing. Therefore, wall passing practice can be recommended as an effective instructional strategy for physical education teachers in vocational high schools.

Abstract

Physical education is often viewed primarily as a means of developing students’ physical skills, health, and fitness, while academic achievement is generally associated with performance in academic subjects. However, physical activity and academic development are interconnected through physiological, cognitive, and psychological processes. This article aims to examine the relationship between physical education, physical activity, cognitive function, and academic achievement based on relevant literature presented in the context of physical education and academic learning. A narrative literature review approach was employed by synthesizing studies addressing brain function, cognitive performance, academic achievement, stress and anxiety, learning motivation, mood, and interdisciplinary integration. The literature indicates that regular physical activity may support brain function through neurogenesis and increased cerebral blood flow, which are associated with attention, memory, and executive function. Empirical evidence also indicates associations between physical activity and academic performance, motivation, attention, and learning behavior. In addition, physical activity may contribute to reducing stress and anxiety and improving mood, which can support students’ learning engagement. Integrating physical education with academic subjects may further provide opportunities for simultaneous development of physical and cognitive competencies. Nevertheless, the effects of physical activity may vary according to individual characteristics, intervention types, and educational contexts. Therefore, physical education should be considered as an integral component of holistic education rather than solely as a means of developing physical fitness and motor skills. Further empirical research is needed to examine the mechanisms and magnitude of the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement.
