Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the transformation of Hong Kong’s citizenship curriculum from Liberal Studies to Citizenship and Social Development (CSD) as a case of deliberate educational repoliticization. Using a qualitative literature-based approach that analyzes curriculum documents and scholarly sources, the research identifies how CSD replaces critical, inquiry-based learning with state-directed instruction emphasizing national loyalty and a simplified national narrative. Unlike previous studies that primarily describe policy shifts, this research contributes a theoretical perspective by framing curriculum change as an ideological state apparatus that narrows reflective and participatory spaces in semi-authoritarian contexts. The findings reveal that, despite these constraints, students still exercise symbolic agency subtle forms of resistance or reinterpretation of official narratives within the classroom. This highlights the dual nature of civic education as both a tool of state control and a site of contested meaning. The study recommends safeguarding academic freedom, integrating critical thinking and dialogue into the curriculum, and empowering teachers with greater pedagogical autonomy to ensure that civic education nurtures informed, critically engaged citizens.

Abstract

Hearing impairment often leads to language delays, particularly in letter recognition skills. Empirical findings revealed that the subject of this study was only able to identify vowel letters and the bilabial consonant /m/. Previous learning strategies applied an expository approach through lectures, which proved ineffective in achieving the intended learning outcomes. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the visual phonics strategy in improving the ability to recognize bilabial letters /p/ and /b/ among second-grade deaf students at SLB Negeri X, Bandung. The research employed a Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A-B-A design. The subject was a deaf child with a profound hearing loss (>90 dB). The results showed that the application of the visual phonics strategy significantly enhanced the subject's ability to articulate, signal, and visually identify bilabial letters when prompted by the researcher, as well as recognize these letters within functional words. Improvement was evident through increased mean levels across phases, supported by intra- and inter-condition analyses. Visual phonics, as a multisensory and interactive learning approach, proves to be an effective alternative for phoneme instruction among deaf children.

Abstract

Nahwu (Arabic grammar) is a discipline aimed at understanding texts in the Arabic language. It was first codified by Imam Abu Aswad al-Du’aly under the instruction of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib during his tenure as caliph. The development of Nahwu was influenced by three main factors within the Arab-Islamic cultural context: religious, national, and political factors. The religious factor emphasizes the importance of Nahwu in reciting and comprehending the Qur'an. The national factor highlights the role of Arabic grammar in shaping Arab-Islamic national identity. The political factor illustrates how the social classification between Arabs and mawlas impacted the dissemination and development of Arabic grammar. Thus, Nahwu not only serves as a tool for understanding religious texts but also plays a significant role in shaping national identity and responding to socio-political dynamics in Arab-Islamic society.

Abstract

Social studies is a subject that consists of various social sciences such as history, sociology, geography, etc., which makes the material quite dense. Social studies learning, which consists of various disciplines, makes some of the learning materials quite dense. Learning media can be an alternative to overcome the obstacles in delivering dense material efficiently. This study aims to analyze the use of podcasts as a medium for social studies learning and to analyze the opportunities for developing podcasts at Ibu Kartini Junior High School in Semarang. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach through literature study, observation, and in-depth interviews. This research was analyzed using the cognitive theory of multimedia learning (Richard E. Mayer). This study found, based on a literature review, that podcasts are effective and efficient when used as a learning medium for social studies. Podcasts have the advantages of ease of access, transmission, and development of themes or materials that are relevant to the subject matter, interests, and characteristics of students. The social studies learning media used by teachers still have weaknesses, so they need to utilize or develop media that facilitate students in building initial understanding and reviewing dense social studies material flexibly. Teachers have the interest and motivation to utilize or develop podcast-based social studies learning media that are the original work of teachers and students who support the plan.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a high level of cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity, which poses challenges in maintaining religious harmony. Issues such as inter-religious conflict, stereotypes, and a lack of cross-cultural understanding are obstacles to social harmony. This study aims to analyze the role of cross-cultural education in building tolerance, moderation, and harmony among religious communities in Indonesia. The research method used is library research, through the collection and analysis of literature in the form of scientific journals, books, academic articles, and relevant documents. The results show that cross-cultural education has a different conceptual basis from multicultural education, with a focus on fostering tolerance through interactions between individuals from different cultural and religious backgrounds. In addition, the dynamics of religious harmony in Indonesia are influenced by historical and political factors, local cultural values, and social conditions, which can either support or hinder the creation of harmony. Cross-cultural education is implemented in formal and non-formal institutions to foster mutual respect and interfaith cooperation, including through religious moderation programs and dialogue- and empathy-based learning. Its implementation in schools and universities involves learning strategies, the active role of educators, policy support, and facing various challenges, but it still opens up opportunities for the development of a sustainable cross-cultural education model. It can therefore be concluded that cross-cultural education plays an important role in shaping tolerant, moderate, and respectful attitudes towards diversity, both in theory and in social practice. With policy support, competent educators, and the use of technology, cross-cultural education can be a strategic instrument in maintaining religious harmony in Indonesia and strengthening national unity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' mathematical application skills in using arithmetic and geometric series concepts in the context of economic decision making. These skills are important because the application of series concepts in business and economics, such as in investment analysis, compound interest, and asset growth and depreciation calculations, requires mathematical understanding that is not only conceptual but also applicable. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with subjects being students of the Mathematics Education study program who have taken the Economics and Business Mathematics course. Data were collected through contextual problem-solving tests and semi-structured interviews to explore students' application abilities and reasoningThe results show that most students are able to identify patterns and apply arithmetic and geometric series formulas well, but still have difficulty relating the calculation results to real economic contexts. It was also found that students with high mathematical modeling abilities tend to make more rational and argumentative economic decisions. This study recommends the need to strengthen context-based learning and economic modeling in economic mathematics lectures in order to improve students' mathematical application skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the identity negotiation strategies developed by the Massenrempulu tribe in response to the cultural hegemony of the Bugis and Toraja tribes in South Sulawesi. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study was conducted over nine months in three districts: Enrekang, Tana Toraja, and Bugis. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with 32 informants, and focus group discussions. The results of the study reveal five interrelated identity negotiation strategies: (1) Selective Cultural Hybridity, in the form of bricolage practices in language and architecture; (2) Symbolic Resistance, through the affirmation of identity as “To Kaili” and the preservation of core traditional rituals; (3) Culture-Based Creative Economy, by developing niche markets for traditional weaving and cuisine; (4) Digital Cultural Diplomacy, namely the use of social media to build independent narratives; and (5) Contextual Adaptation, which demonstrates the flexibility of identity based on the situation. The findings of this study enrich Berry's theory of acculturation by demonstrating the complexity of the adaptation process in the context of multiple hegemonies. This study also makes an important contribution to the development of multicultural education that is more inclusive, critical, and responsive to the dynamics of local identities.
