Abstract

One of the influential factors in the formation of modern society in the Westernworld and subsequently spread to over the world has been the discovery of printing presswhich can be found in the form of printing method, printing company and print media.Since it was firstly used by Gutenberg in about 15th century AD, information which waspreviously delivered through oral medium with a limited audience, then through a methodof printing can be reproduced in large quantities and can be read by more audience, acrossdistance and time. Printing method which encourages the emergence of large printingcompanies and then print media has contributed in transforming modern cultural life ofsociety. In addition, the advent of the printing industries which has transformed intotransnational corporations as well as the emergence of journals and regular newspapersalso contributes significantly in raising public spaces as a medium for discussion andcritical thinking amidst society. Ultimately, this information media transformation brings achange in the state system which is more open and leads to the emergence of ideas ofnationalism which becomes an important milestone in transforming traditional societiesinto modern societies.

Abstract

The development of consumer culture that increasingly strengthened creates verysignificant cultural implications in society. Shift in the meaning of the commodity-valueproducts in order to be a symbolic value, impact on changes in consumption practices thatoriginally was based on making the benefits of the exchange of goods became a symbol ofspace and social identity. Commodities in turn are consumed to obtain all the identities, symbols, images and signs attached to it. This in turn creates a culture where performanceimmanence (the things that are surface) occupies a higher position than anything substantial.Consequently, people are trapped in the banality of morality and spirituality, whichconsiders moral and spiritual issues as being trivial. Cultural impact is of course very crucialto be addressed so that people are not getting mired in a cycle of low moral and spiritualculture that would degrade the quality of humanity itself. In this case, the role of all levels ofsociety needs to be revitalized, and one of them is family. Family as the basic unit of societyhas many functions that are essential to be developed to address the strengthening of consumerculture. Various functions, such as religious function, social cultural function, charity function, the function of protecting, reproductive function, the function of socialization and education, including the economic and environmental development function, can make an importantcontribution to the construction of individual personality and social action. Internalizing thevalues of religion, social, cultural and other social capital will be affecting the actions andsocial practices. In relation to the negative impacts of consumer culture, education forreligious values which is related to the dimension of the divine becomes the counterculture toovercome the culture of immanence in the consumer culture.Reliance transcendental becomes an important mechanism to sensitize the public onthe need for transcendence to improve the quality of our humanity. In addition, efficientinternalization of culture or modest consumption (moderate) as confirmed in faith should bedone to limit the desire for being consumptive. This value needs to be emphasized because ithas a positive impact for the future protection of family and community in both the short andlong term.

Abstract

Communication is like two sides of a coin. On the one hand, communication is avital human tool, without which human beings would lose their function as social beings. However, on the other hand, communication is also often a source of contention, conflictand human tragedy. Therefore, it takes appropriate communication patterns, so thatcommunication does not become a boomerang for mankinds. In this context, Virginia Satir’s thought, a therapist for family problems, is worthyto be observed. Satir categorized communicators into five categories, i.e. Placater, Blamer,Computer (Super-Reasonable), Distractor, and Leveler (Interpersonal Communicator). Thefirst four types are communicators who lead to an incongruent communication. All fourwill only lead to conflict within the family as they communicate. The latter is thecongruent communicator: a leveler communicates in an equality setting. Satirrecommended people to use I-Message instead of You-Message communication patterns ifthe are to be levelers.

Abstract

The education system in Indonesia emphasize on academic intelligence, whichincludes only two or three aspects, more than on the other aspects of intelligence. For thatreason, many children who are not good at academic intelligence, but have good potentials inother aspects of intelligence, do not develop optimally. They are often considered and labeledas "stupid children" by the existing system. This phenomenon is on the contrary to the theoryof multiple intelligences proposed by Howard Gardner, who argues that intelligence is theability to solve various problems in life and produce products or services that are useful invarious aspects of life.Human intelligence is a combination of various general and specific abilities. Thistheory is different from the concept of IQ (intelligence quotient) that involves only languageskills, mathematical, and spatial logics. According to Gardner, there are nine aspects ofintelligence and its potential indicators to be developed by each child born without a braindefect. What Gardner suggested can be considered as a starting point to a perspective thatevery child has a unique individual intelligence. Parents have to treat and educate theirchildren proportionally and equitably. This treatment will lead to a pattern of education that isfriendly to the brain and to the plurality of children’s potential.More than the above points, the notion that multiple intelligences do not just comefrom the brain needs to be followed. Humans actually have different immaterial (spiritual)aspects that do not refer to brain functions. The belief in spiritual aspects and its potentialsmeans that human beings have various capacities and they differ from physical capacities. This is what needs to be addressed from the perspective of education today. The philosophyand perspective on education of the educators, education stakeholders, and especially parents, are the first major issue to be addressed. With this step, every educational activity andcommunication within the family is expected to develop every aspect of children'sintelligence, especially the spiritual intelligence.

Marital life is a form of cooperation between a husband and a wife whichsometimes experiences disharmony. There are always ups and downs in it, and both of thewife and husband need to show their maturity to resolve all the problems that may arise atany time. However, sometimes the couple cannot build good cooperation in solving aproblem or even tend to worsen the situation. Such a situation can create an unhealthymarital life.If such a condition is ignored, it would be worse. A feeling of boredom andannoyed will potentially occurred in their relationship. Boredom is closely related to thepurpose of life. The more clear and meaningful purpose in life, the easier it is to overcomeboredom. Conversely, without a clear purpose and meaningful life, it will be more difficultto overcome it. In running their life, families have to refer to their purpose of life byorganizing and planning activities to achieve their goals in life.

One of parents’ roles in family life is delivering religious values. This can beapplied in the family in three methods, bilhikmah (wisely), bilmauidzhoh hasanah (withgood advice), and bilmujadalah (with exchange thoughts). In applying this method effectively andefficiently, parents as a performer da’i should apply ten guidance for da’i.The ten rules are: 1) parents should provide exemplary before preaching; 2) parentsshould have good impression; 3) parents should explain before giving someassignment/task; 4) parents have to apply some phases in giving tasks; 5) parents shouldfacilitate rather than complicate; 6) the principles should be given before the branch; 7)parents should motivate rather than threat; 8) parents should encourage rather than dictate;9)parents should educate rather than expose; 10) parents should emphasize students tofrom their teacher rather than from books.
