Abstract

This research aims to find out students' perception of the English subject and provides an overview of the students learning outcome at SMA Negeri 1 Jangka Buya, Pidie Jaya. The instruments used in this research are questionnaires, interview guides, and documentation. Students' perceptions are classified into three categories: education, economy, and social interaction, and one group of negative question models support the other three. The student's perception of English is dominant in education. Generally, the students of SMAN 1 Jangka Buya come from dayah (Islamic school). They believe that mastering English can help them promote Islamic teachings more effectively. The negative question is the second dominant result; most students admit that language is a medium to build up connection and communication verbally or through written text. Meanwhile, in the economy category, students believe that we can increase income with English language skills. It is also shown that students who have good grades in English also have a high perception of certain categories. In comparison, students who have low perception get low learning outcomes on the English subject. So that, the students' perception and background must be hardly noticed by the teacher in planning a good teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Making errors is a natural process of learning. Writing as a productive skill is important for students to express their ideas. However, students conducted errors in the productive skills. Therefore, this study is intended to find out types of errors made by students in written English. This study employed the qualitative method where the Error Analysis was implemented. The subject of this study is students in first grade of SMAN 1 Abdya and the object of this study were the errors found in written English. The population of this research was all of students in first grade which consists of 208 students from all study programs where 25 % of the populations were taken as the sample. To collect the data, written tests were conducted. The written test shows the percentage of writing errors, including omission errors, which is 58.38%, misformation errors with a total of 16.48%, misordering error 13.89%, and addition of 11.26%. The errors were found when students omitted 'to be' as main verb. Second, students tend to add 'to' after modal auxiliaries such as 'can' or 'will'. Third, misformation errors happened when students could not form the verb correctly. Last, the misordering errors were produced when students put words randomly. Consequently, it was discovered that the errors made by students were impacted by their native language, and this is the interlanguage move.

Abstract

The complexity of problems encountered in today’s world has forced educational institutions to re-envision their mission in order to successfully prepare a competent and skilled alumna who is able to face the future challenges on a global scale. To achieve this goal, a strategic policy and management, which involves different stakeholders and other parties, are needed. To prepare a competent human resource that is able to face each of the challenges and changes, a curriculum is required that meets the established standards as well as the job market demands. In this regard, this paper addresses the implementation of competency-based curriculum (CBC) in Indonesia. The introduction explains the overview of CBC, its aim and implementation, the relationship between English curriculum and environment, and English language syllabus. The second part discusses the main principles of the curriculum, the theoretical approach that relates to language description and some theories of second language learning that underpin the curriculum. Additionally, other factors that relates to curriculum such as the context and the assessment system including language curriculum innovation are also explored. The third part is the conclusion and identification which reports some of the unsolved issues that relates to the implementation of the curriculum.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the types of language learning strategies employed by higher and lower achieving students on speaking skill and to find out the impacts of language learning strategies employed by them. A questionnaire was used as the instrument of this study. The sample of this research were 82 students who were chosen based on the criteria: (1) the students already passed all the Speaking I to IV classes, (2) the students consist of higher achieving students (score ≥B) and lower achieving students (score ≤C), and (3) the students allowed the researcher to obtain their speaking scores. Thus, purposive sampling was used here. In this research, the researcher used Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (2003) to determine the students’ language learning strategy. The result revealed that the higher achieving students used memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies in learning speaking. On the other hand, the lower achieving students generally did not use the learning strategies in their learning activities. Therefore, as the impact of this learning habit, they do not possess a good speaking ability and achieve low scores in speaking class.

Abstract

It is surprising to find that there have been many shops in Banda Aceh that use English on their signs. This study was conducted to investigate the shop owners’ reasons for using English on their shop signs. To obtain the data from the shop owners, observation sheet and interview guide were used as the research instruments. The data were analyzed by using the model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). It was found that the 10 shop owners gave four reasons they used English in their shop signs, which can be classified into the themes. They are 1) to be easily remembered; 2) to follow the trend; 3) to use their own name; and 4) to be unique. In conclusion, among four terms of reasons of shop owners in using English in their shop signs, the theme of “becoming unique” or distinctive is the most given reason by the shop owners.
