This research was conducted to investigate students’ English proficiency and their needs toward English learning outcomes. This research was based on a qualitative research design. The data were collected from 80 students who received an English proficiency test and eight students who participated in an interview session. The interview dealt with their needs and problems in communication skills in English. The result shows that there was no student who got excellent English proficiency level, eight students (10%) reached good category, 46 students (58%) achieved satisfactory category, 21 students (26%) were in poor category, and five students (6%) were in very poor category. In addition, all students need English for communication in their future profession. Finally, the results of the interview also show that industrial engineering students preparing to work in manufacturing various marble products face a serious problem in marketing their products to the consumers. In addition, the students majoring in tourism destination area considered that they have to communicate in English to support their job in providing services to tourists speaking different languages. Therefore, it can be concluded that vocational school students need transactional English in a specific field because they are being prepared to work in enterprises or to be entrepreneurs.

Abstract

This research examined the rhetorical pattern of thesis background, particularly the undergraduate scripts of English education department students. The study aims to find out the frequency of the rhetorical patterns in writing thesis background. The approach used in this study is a qualitative method based on content analysis. The sample consisted of 20 English education undergraduate theses from two universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed based on Kanoksilapatham (2005) classification by following the framework of Swales’s CARS model (2004). The results show that the undergraduate students of English departments have a similar frequency of the rhetorical pattern with the framework guidance. Although some students have reached an adequate standard in writing research background using their own way, they also should improve the language style in academic writing.

Abstract

This case study is aimed at finding out the types of classroom communication strategies employed by English department lecturers during their teaching. In this study, three lecturers participated (HQ, RR, and SW in pseudonyms). They were lecturers for academic English, critical speaking, and advanced reading classes. The instruments of this study were videotapes, observation guides, field notes, and interview guides. After the data collection process, the data were analyzed using coding analysis and interactive analysis. The results showed that the most employed direct strategies were circumlocution and code-switching. HQ used circumlocution 54 times and code-switching 51 times; RR used circumlocution 21 times and code-switching 32 times. The major use of indirect strategies was comprehension check, which was used 47 times by RR, 28 times by HQ, and 9 times by SW. Last, for the interactional strategy, filler was the most used strategy. RR used it 19 times, HQ used it 46 times, and SW used it 26 times. It is suggested that lecturers are expected to balance these three strategies to maintain good teacher-student communication. However, for adult learners (college students), it is found that lecturers mostly use circumlocution during the lecture.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the perception of post-graduate students on plagiarism, the influenced factors, and the strategies used by the students to avoid plagiarism in thesis writing. To collect the data, 10 post-graduate students of Graduate Study of English Education at University of Syiah Kuala (USK) were chosen randomly based on the predetermined criteria: the students in the academic year 2016 and 2017 who have written their thesis. The data were collected through interviews. The result of data analysis shows that the post-graduate students of English Education at USK have the same perception about the issue of plagiarism in thesis writing. The factors contributing to plagiarism are limited time, the deadline, technological development and ease of accessing online sources, students' laziness, lack of understanding to paraphrase, and poor understanding of plagiarism. Furthermore, two main strategies can be used to avoid plagiarism in thesis writing. The first is paraphrasing and quoting other peoples' ideas. The second is reading a lot of sources from many articles and journals to learn how the authors develop their idea in their writing and how to put citations and references appropriately.

Abstract

This experimental research was conducted to find out the effect of using clustering technique on the students’ writing skills at Senior High School No. 1 Delima, Pidie District. It also has several sub-focuses, namely figuring out the students’ writing content, organization, and language use. The subjects of the study were the 10th grade students that were divided in random sampling into the experimental and the control groups. This procedure was carried out through homogeneity of the selected samples. To expose the focuses of answers, the pretest and post-test instruments were applied to both groups. The result showed that the students in experimental group had an improved quality of writing a descriptive text than that of the control-group students.  At a level of significance 0.05, the ttestscore was higher than ttablescore (8,441,684). In addition, the mean score of the experimental group (78,79) was higher than the mean score of the control group (53,75). This figure has corresponded with the results of the three writing aspects of the students’ work, which also brought a relatively positive achievement. This means that there were significant improvements regarding the students’ writing aspects of content, organization, and language use in descriptive texts respectively.
