Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze ten covers of 2019 best-seller fantasy novels through multimodal. The research method used was qualitative research. The objects in this research were ten book covers of 2019 best-seller fantasy novels. The instruments used were documentation that aimed at obtaining data, including relevant books, study, activity reporting, relevant research data. Content analysis was used to obtain the data. This study used five phased cycles in analyzing the data; compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. The result of analyzing the novels is emphasized in two focuses, including representation and interactive function. Several novels have a narrative aspect, while others contain conceptual interpretation, which is part of a representative function. It was very challenging to interpret some implicit meaning of the symbols in some of the novels as it requires mythical knowledge. Therefore, it is expected that understanding the implicit meaning comprehensively will make readers easier to understand the story outline of the novel.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out if there is a significant difference between the students who were taught through summarizing activity using somebody wanted but so (SWBS) strategy than those who were not taught through the strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension in terms of finding out the main idea, specific information, word meaning, reference, and inference. This study employed a true experimental design in which there were two classes as the samples classified into experimental and control classes. The classes were chosen by using cluster random sampling and each class consisted of 36 students. In collecting the data, pre-test and post-test were used and the data were analyzed by using SPSS version 21. The result of the study found the post-test mean score at the experimental class is 84.78, and the post-test mean score at the control class is 73.33. Furthermore, the result of the z-score between both experimental and control classes is 6.05 at the level significance of 5% (0.05). Thus, it indicates that there is a significant difference between the students who were taught through SWBS strategy than those who were not taught through this strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was conducted to know the effect of Think-Talk-Write strategy on the students’ writing analytical exposition improvement and to know the students’ responses toward the use of this strategy in teaching writing an analytical exposition text. This is a quasi-experimental research in which the samples were taken from two classes, experimental class (XI-IPA F) which consisted of 34 students and control class (XI-IPA G) which consisted of 36 students. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post-test. The result showed that the mean scores of pre-test in the experimental class was 61.47, while the mean score of post-test in the experimental class was 76.67. Moreover, both scores were analyzed by comparing the z-z-score of pre-test and post-test in the experimental class. The result of the z-test was -11.09 at the level significance 5% with assumption if the z-score is beyond -1.96 and 1.96, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire showed that the students gave positive responses toward the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy on teaching writing analytical exposition text where 57% of students strongly agreed and 40% of students agreed with the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy could improve the students’ ability to write an analytical exposition text.

In this study, the writers employed observation guide sheets to collect the data and it was employed to 2 English teachers in Aceh Besar. The guide was developed based on Van Dijk (1980) on macrostructure in discourse society. The theory was adopted and adjusted based on the classroom spoken discourse. The data were analyzed using the interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The steps were data condensation, data display, and data verification by using a percentage formula. The findings indicate that two teachers conducted the process of teaching and learning activities according to the lesson plans that they had previously designed. Even though both of them had different teaching strategies, but the lesson plans had a complete structure with 6 steps in macro-phases.

Abstract

This paper focused on analysing the visual values found in the Pathway to English 3 textbook. In conducting this research, a descriptive qualitative approach was used. The content analysis model was applied. The data was taken from an English textbook published by Erlangga in 2015 entitled Pathway to English 3. A documentation approach was used to collect the data. The textbook was examined the data based on Kress and Leeuwen (2006) visual complementarity. There are three results of the research. First, most participants employed in Pathway to English 3 textbook are human participants (53.4%). Meanwhile, the non-human participants mostly used are object participants. Second, in terms of interactive meaning, the textbook supports the medium shot (69.5%) and the oblique perspective (54.9%). All of the pictures in the book are in black and white (100%). Additionally, (81.7%) images have a background. Last, from the compositional meaning, it was found that the images in the textbook are more presented to be informative (38.6%) rather than illustrative (34.8%) and decorative (26.6%). Furthermore, the dominant positions of the images are top/bottom position (60.7). In conclusion, textbook pictures can serve pedagogical purposes by supporting students in completing the tasks that follow the pictures.
