Abstract

English Language Teaching (ELT) is supposed to assist learners in actual life at the marketplace. Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) globally has flourished with tremendous products to address the purpose, e.g.,  EnglishClass101.com. Though this website includes a few aspects of ELT, the learning platform draws our attention for its affordability of price, feasibility of use, and recency of topics. The present study aims to unravel the underpinning teaching methodology of the website, with a particular focus on English grammar teaching. The present study employs a qualitative study design with two instruments of data collection: observation and transcription of lesson videos. The results indicate that contextual English grammar was used and integrated with lessons (newest and favorite); vocabulary (lists, words of the day, common words, key phrases); teacher assistance (explanation, assessment, tests). Majorly, two methods have been elaborated throughout the lessons on the website, i.e.,  Communicative Language Teaching, and Direct Method. Additionally, a few techniques are performed including teachers' gestures for meaning, annotation, repetition, drill, elicitation, option matching, deductive and inductive approach. The findings imply that any CALL products remain in use when the aspects of lessons involve daily topics and select feasible ELT methods

Abstract

Self-regulated learning activities are designed to encourage learners to actively participate in their own learning. Self-regulated learning allows learners to become independent learners in designing syllabi and lesson plans through drill assignments. The drill assignment is given by an instructor to strengthen the connections which are formed in the process of learners’ growth in mental motor skills. Instructional Design is a course that introduces learners to design their own instruction by designing syllabi and lesson plans and teaching media related to their chosen English instructional material. Monitoring learners’ activity by instructional goals and giving feedback on the learners’ assignments are the Instructor’s roles. Since learners are trained to be teachers, they must know how to design or create their own syllabus and lesson plan, teaching media related to the topic they are going to teach. Once learners create syllabi and lesson plans, they are required to determine Standard Competence (SK) Basic Competence (KD), and Indicator and the last is an instructional goal. Based on the syllabi and lesson plans they have designed, it is obviously described that the learners are capable to determine standard competencies based on operational verbs according to Bloom’s taxonomy as three domains stated, cognitive, affective, and psychomotor

Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's data analysis; data reduction, data display, and data conclusion or verification. The research found seven types of figurative language; 1) simile (four sentences), 2) metaphor (three sentences), 3) allegory (four sentences), 4) personification (four sentences), 5) antonomasia (one sentence), and 6) epithet (three sentences). Figurative language in Timorese songs is a description the songwriter uses to explain meaning through unusual comparisons to attract attention and make something more straightforward. Abstract

Getting challenged with academic writing, creative writing in a form of poetry can be delivered as an alternative task to help students cope with writing challenges. Haiku as one of the simplest poetry writings from Japan may help beginner writers to explore poetic words on certain objects or topics without using too many words in each line. Struggling writers can also use Haiku to stimulate their creative thinking in descriptive writing. With its simple pattern, Haiku can also boost students’ confidence to write. This study investigated whether students’ Haiku writing follows its rules and represents the qualities of creative writing. This qualitative study took 20 students in their third year of senior high school as research participants. This research used documentation as an instrument which is the students’ Haiku poetry writing. In the data analysis, students’ Haikus were assessed based on Haiku rules and the qualities of creative writing. It was found that most students have a sufficient understanding of the rules of Haiku writing. Students made some mistakes in their Haikus. However, students showed their efforts to perform the qualities of creative writing. Thus, the researchers believe that with consistent practices, students can write a qualified haiku as creative writing. More use of sensory words can further help the students to vary the diction and characterize the image described in their haikus. Finally, using haiku to express students’ feelings and thoughts and stimulate students’ creative writing is recommended in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the modes and techniques used by interpreters in the process of interpreting sermons at Potter's House Christian Ministries. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. This research employed the scrutinizing method for data collection, which entails attentive listening to language usage (Sudaryanto, 1993: 133). The researcher adopted a non-participatory role, serving as mere observer of data without direct involvement in its formation. The study focused on analyzing language usage in two recorded videos of weekly services at Potter's House Christian Ministries. The researcher specifically examined individual sentences as manifestations of data, which were recorded and organized into tables based on criteria such as perspective, vocabulary, and modality. Technique assessment was employed to gather data and assess the impact of different modes and techniques on interpretation. The study reveals that interpreters at Potter's House Christian Ministries primarily employ consecutive interpreting mode, particularly short consecutive interpreting. The researcher also discovered six predominant techniques used during the interpretation process, namely: (1) reformulation, (2) elimination technique, (3) summarization, (4) error correction technique, (5) metaphors and saying technique, and (6) code-switching technique.
