Abstract

Medication use in patients with chronic diseases during Ramadan is a crucial yet often overlooked public health challenge in the primary health care system in Indonesia. Non-compliance with medication regimens and inappropriate dosage adjustments during fasting can lead to serious complications and even medical emergencies, especially in patients with diabetes and hypertension. This community service activity aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmaceutical counseling, accompanied by leaflets, in enhancing patients’ knowledge of medication use during fasting for chronic conditions. This quasi-experimental study was conducted at the Technical Implementing Unit of Kepanjenkidul Health Center, Blitar City, involving 18 patients diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension. The study employed a knowledge questionnaire.  The design of this study aims to analyze changes in patient knowledge related to drug use during Ramadan fasting through a structured intervention approach. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in knowledge scores, from an average of 28.33 (pre-test) to 47.11 (post-test), representing a percentage increase of 37.56% (p-value = 0.000, p = < 0.05). In conclusion, pharmaceutical counseling through brochures has shown promise as a strategy for improving patients’ understanding of medication management during Ramadan. It is recommended that health centers develop specific counseling protocols and educational materials tailored to the characteristics of patients, particularly those from low-educated and pre-elderly groups. The implementation of this counseling program needs to be integrated into routine pharmaceutical services, with a focus on preparation several weeks before Ramadan to improve medication safety and therapy fulfillment for patients who choose to fast.

Abstract

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance that first appears or is detected during pregnancy and can lead to various complications for both the mother and the fetus. Preventing and managing GDM can be achieved through nutrition and physical activity education. This education aimed to enhance the understanding of pregnant women so that they can adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent GDM. This study employed an analytical approach with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of pregnant women visiting the obstetrics and gynecology clinic. This community service activity was conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of Kediri Regency Hospital (RSKK) using lecture-based counseling, interactive discussions, and the distribution of educational leaflets. Evaluation was done by comparing pregnant women's knowledge levels before and after counseling using a pre-test and post-test. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon statistical test. Among the 40 respondents who participated in the counseling before the education, it was found that 24 pregnant women (60%) had low knowledge levels, 12 pregnant women (30%) had moderate knowledge, and only 4 (10%) had good knowledge. After the counseling, a significant improvement was observed, with 35 pregnant women (88%) had good knowledge and five pregnant women (12%) had moderate knowledge. The Wilcoxon test results indicated a significant increase in knowledge after the educational intervention. This education program should be continuously implemented with the support of healthcare workers and adequate facilities to raise awareness and prevent the occurrence of GDM in pregnant women.

Abstract

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) or drug resistance is a condition where TB germs can no longer be killed with first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs (OAT), so they must be treated with second-line OAT (Drug-resistant TB Patient Pocket Book, 2020). Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is still a threat in TB control and is one of the main public health problems in many countries in the world. The data collection technique in this activity was through a questionnaire survey given before and after the presentation of the material on Assisting Drug-resistant TB Patients. The sample was 46 participants who were TB Cadres from each Sub-district throughout Kediri City. The data analysis used in this activity by measuring the correct and incorrect answers between the pre- and posttests that had been filled out by the training participants. The results of the questionnaire filled out by the activity participants showed an increase in knowledge about Assisting Drug-resistant TB Patients Since being diagnosed. The success of drug-resistant TB treatment is also inseparable from the important role of the family, health workers, and patient companions who always support patients to undergo DR-TB treatment until completion. Effective assistance will affect the success of treatment, the patient's quality of life, and reduce the risk of transmission of drug-resistant TB in the community.

Abstract

Type II diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that often leads to serious complications, especially when blood glucose levels are not well controlled. Blood glucose reduction can be achieved through various interventions, one of which is diabetes exercise combined with health education. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diabetes exercise and health education on blood glucose levels and knowledge of patients with type II diabetes mellitus. The method used was a community service activity involving 60 respondents at Srondol Public Health Center, Semarang City. The program consisted of diabetes exercise sessions and health education on diabetes management. The results showed a significant decrease in blood glucose levels before and after the exercise intervention. In addition, there was an increase in respondents' knowledge regarding diabetes management after receiving health education. The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) revealed that respondents felt more motivated and experienced strong social support in managing their diabetes. In conclusion, diabetes exercise and health education were proven to be effective in reducing blood glucose levels and improving patients' knowledge of diabetes management. This program can be widely implemented in the community to support sustainable diabetes control.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Farmer groups are at risk of developing hypertension. Several contributing factors include exposure to pesticides, unhealthy lifestyles (such as lack of exercise, smoking, consumption of high-sodium foods, stress, and alcoholic beverages), and heavy work that can cause fatigue. Lifestyle modifications that are known to prevent hypertension are physical activities that are carried out regularly, such as hypertension gymnastics. The implementation of hypertension gymnastics has been carried out in the community in Pajarakan Village to help prevent hypertension using the field survey approach method and hypertension gymnastics training. A total of 26 participants participated in hypertension gymnastics which ended with the provision of hypertension gymnastics videos to representatives of the residents. Pre- and post-test screening was also carried out after 3 days of intervention to determine the decrease in blood pressure in the farmer group. The results obtained on the first, second and third days were 0.000 (<0.05), meaning that there was an effect of hypertension gymnastics on reducing blood pressure. The community is expected to be able to hold hypertension gymnastics independently and regularly.
