Abstract

This article analyzes the significance of the Ummah of Muhammad in Surah al-Fīl through Ismail Ascholy’s commentary in Safīnah Kallā Saya‘lamūn, utilizing Wilhelm Dilthey’s hermeneutical framework as the primary analytical instrument. This study contrasts the prevailing interpretation of Surah al-Fīl, which focuses on divine retribution and the annihilation of Abraha’s forces, by illustrating Ascholy's theological perspective that perceives the event of al-Fīl as an initial indication of divine safeguarding and the elevation of Muhammad's Ummah even before the Prophet's mission commenced. The study reveals that Ascholy’s intellectual and spiritual development within the Nusantara pesantren tradition fosters an interpretive stance that repudiates the generalization of collective punishment following the emergence of prophethood. This attitude is expressed through the selection of relevant Qur’anic verses, the application of the notion of taʿjīl al-ʿadhāb (the hastening of retribution), and the focus on the extraordinary nature of the al-Fīl incident. The stage of Verstehen provides a theological interpretation of Surah al-Fīl as a declarative assertion of the preeminence of the Ummah of Muhammad, rather than simply a historical narrative of divine vengeance. The findings suggest that Ascholy’s exegesis exemplifies a unique style of Nusantara pesantren tafsir, marked by theological optimism and the formation of communal identity, thus broadening the interpretive scope of Surah al-Fīl in modern Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

The relationship between the text and its context in the term Milku Al-Yamīn is often understood differences and shifts in meaning from classical to contemporary times, which are inseparable from social factors and thus influence as a form of ownership of slaves or prisoners of war in pre-Islamic Arab society. However, this interpretation often causes debate when confronted with modern human values. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study and thematic interpretation (maudhū‘i) method, combined with socio-historical analysis and contextual hermeneutics. The results show that the textual understanding of Milku Al-Yamīn in the Qur'an cannot be separated from the social and cultural context of the society when the verses were revealed. The Qur'an does not directly legalize slavery, but takes an evolutionary path by emphasizing liberation, justice, and respect for human dignity. In the modern context, scholars believe that Milku Al-Yamīn needs to be reinterpreted as a symbol of social transformation towards the elimination of oppression and inequality. Thus, through a reading that takes into account both the text and context, Milku Al-Yamīn is understood not as a legitimization of slavery, but as part of the moral and humanitarian process promoted by the Qur'an.

Abstract

This article aims to examine Muhammad Ḥusain Ṭabāṭabāʾī’s reaction to modernity in Tafsīr al-Mīzān fī Tafsīr al-Qurʾān, contextualizing it within the wider discourse of Muslim discussions on rationality, empiricism, and secularization. The research utilizes a qualitative, library-based methodology centered on intellectual history. The principal source, al-Mīzān, is analyzed thematically and later organized according to Abdullah Saeed’s paradigm of “modernist tafsir” to discern patterns of adoption, negotiation, and critique of modernity. The results suggest that Ṭabāṭabāʾī embodies a dual stance. He incorporates certain contemporary features, like a critical perspective on tradition, rational and linguistic methodologies, inter-sectarian openness, and a pronounced focus on interpreting the Qurʾān through the Qurʾān (tafsīr al-Qurʾān bi al-Qurʾān). Conversely, he rigorously challenges scientific reductionism and the subjugation of revelation to Western empirical epistemology. Rooted on the philosophy of al-ḥikmah al-mutaʿāliyah, he safeguards the metaphysical and mystical aspects of the Qurʾān while remaining receptive to rational discourse with contemporary ideas. This paper advances the field by illustrating that answers to modernity within the Shiʿi tradition are diverse, presenting a form of critical synthesis between rationality and transcendence. In this regard, Ṭabāṭabāʾī illustrates the potential for a Qurʾānic interpretive epistemology that is both contemporary and critically defiant of Western intellectual dominance.

Abstract

Amid rapid socio-cultural change, the sustainability of Qur’anic memorization beyond pesantren walls remains a critical yet underexplored issue in Living Qur’an studies. This research aims to examine how structural systems shape memorization practices, how actors construct the meaning of Living Qur’an, and how structure–agency contestation emerges in post-pesantren contexts. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with students, alumni, and teachers, and analyzed using thematic coding and comparative matrix analysis to identify essential patterns. Findings reveal a direct relationship between institutional structure (scheduled muroja’ah, sima’an partnership, layered evaluation) and the stability of memorization practices within the pesantren. However, an indirect effect occurs when a strong structural dependency weakens self-regulation, resulting in diminished continuity after graduation. The rhetoric–practice gap further shows that “living” the Qur’an is frequently reduced to ritual preservation rather than ethical transformation. Implications highlight the need for transition-oriented pedagogy that gradually shifts external control toward autonomous agency without overstating rejected assumptions about structural rigidity. The study contributes theoretically by advancing an ecological-structurational framework, integrating Bourdieu’s habitus and Giddens’ structuration theory to reconceptualize Living Qur’an as a dynamic interaction between system and actor.

Abstract

Qur’ānic education plays a strategic role in shaping Muslims' moral character by instilling the values embedded in the Qur’ān. Nevertheless, studies that systematically extract the concept of istiqāmah from the story of Prophet Yūsuf and relate it to the framework of Qur’ānic education remain limited. This study aims to identify the values and principles of istiqāmah in the story of Prophet Yūsuf and to analyze their implications for Qur’ānic education in the context of contemporary moral challenges. The research employs a qualitative thematic tafsīr method. The primary data consist of the verses of Sūrat Yūsuf, while the secondary data are drawn from classical exegetical works such as those of Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī, and al-Sa‘dī. The analysis was conducted in three stages: interpreting the verses according to the exegetes, extracting the values and principles of istiqāmah, and formulating their pedagogical implications for Qur’ānic education. The findings reveal that the values of istiqāmah include patience, safeguarding chastity and honor, preaching under pressure, and compassion and tolerance, while its principles include steadfastness in faith, moral integrity, perseverance in facing trials, and the preservation of social relationships. These findings provide a conceptual foundation for the development of Qur’ānic education oriented toward character strengthening and social harmony.
