Abstract

Abstract This article presents a codicological analysis and consistency in the use of rasm 'uthmānī rules in ancient Quranic manuscripts found in Pakis village, Sale District, Rembang Regency. This research is qualitative with a philological approach. The philological method is used to reveal aspects of the codicology of the Mushaf, while the coherence test is based on six rules formulated by al-Suyūṭi, namely, the ḥadhf al-Ḥurūf rules, the ziyādah al-Ḥurūf rules, the al-Hamz rules, the al-Badl rules, the al-Faṣl wa al-Waṣl rules, and Mā Fīhi Qirā`atāni fa Kutiba ‘alā Iḥdahumā. Based on data testing that has been carried out, it was discovered that the studied manuscript was copied in the 19th century. This is demonstrated by the paper supports with the PROPATRIA watermark and the HIV DELDEN countermark, as well as the chainline without a shadow. The condition of the mushaf is uncovered and corrupted in several parts, so that only surah al-Māidah to surah al-Ghāshiyah remain. This manuscript does not have any illumination, but there are several symbols showing the change of juz, rukū', end of verse and name of surah. Copying Mushafs does not consistently use the rules of rasm uthmānī in terms of adding letters, subtracting letters, hamzah, replacing letters, separating and connecting letters, and writing sentences that have multiple reading variants. This was caused by the absence of references to the writing of the Quran in Indonesia at that time. Keywords: Ancient manuscripts of the Quran, philology, rasm consistency.

Abstract

The study of Qur'anic interpretation is not only limited to classical aspects such as asbabun nuzul (circumstances of revelation), Makki-Madani classification, and the coherence (munasabah) of verses but also includes the influence of qira’at variations in understanding Qur'anic words. Qira’at, as a discipline within ulumul Qur’an (the sciences of the Qur'an), has become an essential tool in Qur'anic exegesis. This study aims to examine whether qira’at influences the interpretation in Tafsir Marāh Labīd, particularly in the exegesis of Surah Al-Baqarah. Using a qualitative approach with textual analysis methods, this research analyzes several verses in Surah Al-Baqarah that exhibit differences in recitation due to qira’at variations. The formal object of this research is the analytical approach to Qirā’āt, particularly farsh al-ḥurūf, in the interpretation of the Qur’an, while the material object is Surah Al-Baqarah. The findings indicate that the qira’at presented by Shaykh Nawawi in his interpretation of Surah Al-Baqarah has an impact on meaning production and exegesis. At least ten instances of Farsh al-Hurūf in Surah Al-Baqarah affect interpretation. These variations have different implications, including: Substantial impact, which explains differences among Islamic jurisprudential (fiqh) schools of thought. Editorial impact, which influences the distinction in meaning between khitab (speech) and mukhattab (the addressee). Non-substantial meaning differences, which explore synonyms of specific words. Although not all of Shaykh Nawawi’s discussions on qira’at result in substantial changes in meaning production, they significantly influence the editorial aspects of interpretation.

Abstract

Several Salafi Islamic organizations that openly campaign for the caliphate have begun to penetrate the realm of social media. One of them is in the Muslimahnews.com media which is allegedly managed by the HTI organization. Some of the writings in it echo the caliphate and kaffah Islam based on verses from the Koran and Hadith. Many of the contributors use classical interpretations and several opinions of prominent figures to strengthen the arguments built by them in campaigning for the caliphate and kaffah Islam. This research is included in a qualitative study using library research data collection techniques. The collected data was classified and analyzed using Abdul Mustaqim's epistemological theory. As for the results of this research, firstly , differences in views regarding the meaning of the caliphate are influenced by three things, namely the sources used, methodology and the validity of the truth to measure understanding regarding the caliphate. Second, Muslimahnews.com contributors tend to use textual methods in interpreting and analogizing their understanding, so that this understanding is not contextual to today's times

Abstract

This article attempts to examine the influence of qirā'ah farsh al-ḥurūf on the interpretation of al-Suyūṭī in Tafsīr Jalālayn. This study is important because knowing the differences in meaning in a qirā'ah will prove that differences in the history of receiving qirā'ah can influence an interpretation or not. This research uses a descriptive-analytical method using morfologi theory to reveal differences in the meaning of interpretation so that it can be concluded: the inclusion of qirā'ah in the book Tafsīr Jalālayn surah Āli 'Imrān carried out by al-Suyūṭī is purely in accordance with his sanad qirā'ah in the book Sharḥ al-Shāṭibiyah, except verse 21, and the differences in qirā'āt in Tafsīr Jalālayn surah Āli 'Imrān influence the interpretation of the meaning but do not contradict each other.

Abstract

Min Hudā Al-Qurān is an interpretation that has its own color and orientation within the discourse of Shia exegesis since it’s not trapped in the ideological vortex like most Shia interpretations. Its author, Muḥammad Taqī al-Mudarrisī, aims to create an interpretation that responds to social issues by reflecting on empirical realities. This research is necessary to reveal the essence, trace the sources and methods, and test the validity of the interpretation. This is a qualitative library research. The results of this research are as follows: First, al-Mudarrisī believes that interpretation must carry a pragmatic spirit and be able to provide solutions to community issues. Second, al-Mudarrisī’s interpretation is majority based on empirical realities and rational logics. The Qur'an, reality, and reason are dialogued using a functional paradigm. Third, the method used is al-manhaj al-taḥlīlī min khilāli al-rabṭ al-mawḍū’ī. Al-Mudarrisī systematically and sequentially analyzes the verses that have previously been grouped into a unified theme. Al-Mudarrisī also adopts al-manhaj al-tadabbur al-mubāshar, or direct contemplation of the Qur'anic verses. Fourth, Min Hudā Al-Qurān cannot be considered one hundred percent valid, whether in terms of coherence, correspondence, or pragmatism.

Abstract

This study analyzes QS. Yāsīn [36]: 68 in the context of elderly life using the Ma‘nā Cum-Maghzā approach, which integrates historical meaning analysis, historical phenomenal significance, and dynamic phenomenal significance. This research aims to explore the verse’s meaning in a more contextual and relevant manner, addressing the social, psychological, and spiritual challenges faced by the elderly in the modern era. The research method used is library research, reviewing primary sources such as classical and contemporary tafsir books, as well as hermeneutic literature related to the concept of aging in Islam. The findings show that QS. Yāsīn [36]: 68 not only describes the biological process of aging but also conveys profound theological and sociological messages. From a historical meaning perspective, the verse emphasizes the concept of naks (weakening), which represents the human life cycle from strength to weakness. In terms of historical phenomenal significance, the verse highlights human limitations and the importance of spiritual preparedness in facing old age. Meanwhile, from the perspective of dynamic phenomenal significance, this verse has relevance in addressing the challenges of the elderly, such as social isolation, identity crises, and the need for spiritual guidance. The implications of this research include strengthening the role of religion in providing spiritual support for the elderly, enhancing elderly participation in meaningful social activities, and developing policies based on Islamic values to improve the well-being of the elderly.

Abstract

Abdurrahman bin Nashir As-Sa'di is a modern commentator who seeks to maintain the concept of stability of meaning in the theory of Qur'anic interpretation, while Paul Ricoeur is a hermeneutic figure who offers a plurality of meanings. This study aims to examine comparatively the construction of the meaning of texts according to As-Sa'di and Ricoeur. The main focus of this study is to find how the stability of meaning in the rules of interpretation of As-Sa'di deals with the plurality of meanings in Riceour's hermeneutics as well as its implications for the interpretive text of the Qur'an in modern contexts. This article highlights how As-Sa'di emphasizes the authority of revelation and the authenticity of the Arabic language in interpretation, while Ricoeur offers a plurality of symbolic meanings based on the reader's experience. This study aims to find common ground and differences between these two approaches in the context of modern Qur'an interpretation

Abstract

This research aims to examine whether the pesantren interpretation, particularly the interpretation of KH. Maimoen Zubair in Safīnah Kallā Saya’lamūn, is still trapped in textuality and repetition, and to position this interpretation within the typology of modern exegesis. Using a qualitative method based on content analysis, this study maps the characteristics of KH. Maimoen Zubair’s exegesis in relation to the needs of the modern Muslim community and measures it against the framework of modern exegesis as mapped by J.M.S. Baljon, J.J.G. Jansen, Johanna Pink, Pieter Coppens, and Mun’im Sirry. The results of the study indicate that KH. Maimoen Zubair’s exegesis successfully breaks free from the textuality and repetition often associated with pesantren interpretations. His interpretations respond to contemporary issues such as environmental exploitation, Quran translation, and technological development, offering practical and relevant solutions. Additionally, within the framework of modern exegesis, this interpretation is classified as "orthodox yet modern," integrating traditional approaches with a progressive and adaptive vision for addressing contemporary challenges. This study affirms that pesantren exegesis has great potential to become a dynamic and contextual space for interpretation, contributing significantly to the discourse of modern exegesis while remaining rooted in traditional values.

Abstract

This study analyzes the meaning of the term “garangan” in Lora Ismail Al-Ascholy's oral exegesis discourse on Surah Fātir verse 32. In the oral exegesis delivered through social media, Lora Ismail interprets lafadz ẓālimun linafsihi as “garangan,” a term that has distinctive cultural connotations in the local community. This study aims to understand the relevance of using the term in the context of da'wah and how this approach reflects the contextualization of Qur'anic exegesis. Using descriptive qualitative methods and a netnography approach, this study examines Lora Ismail's lectures uploaded on his Instagram account. The results show that the use of the term “garangan” aims to bring religious messages closer to the audience through a more familiar linguistic approach. This term not only reflects cultural adaptation in the delivery of tafsir, but also provides motivation for worshipers to continue improving themselves without feeling alienated from the religious community. This research contributes to the development of oral exegesis studies and shows how culture-based da'wah can strengthen religious understanding in Indonesian Muslim societies.

Abstract

The writing of the Qur’anic manuscript has undergone significant stages since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), culminating in its official codification during the caliphate of Uthman ibn ‘Affan, known as Rasm Uthmani. This codification became the standard for the transcription of Qur’anic manuscripts throughout the Islamic world. However, this writing system differs fundamentally from the modern Imla’ (orthographic) rules used in contemporary Arabic. This study aims to identify and analyze the differences between Rasm Uthmani and Imla’ conventions, as well as to explore their linguistic and interpretative implications for understanding the sacred text. The research adopts a qualitative approach using library research methods and content analysis of selected Qur’anic verses that exhibit distinctive orthographic features. The findings reveal that Rasm Uthmani is not merely a conventional script but carries profound and symbolic meanings that are not always accessible through standard Imla’ approaches. Certain spellings that appear inconsistent with modern phonetics in fact convey semantic signals that enrich exegetical interpretations. Therefore, understanding these differences is crucial in the context of Qur’anic interpretation, both classical and contemporary. This study recommends that tafsir scholars pay greater attention to rasm aspects as an integral component in comprehensively grasping the divine message.
