Abstract

Abstract Reading comprehension is a critical skill for academic success, particularly among elementary school students. This study investigates the effectiveness of the skimming technique in enhancing reading comprehension among fifth-grade students at Primary School 57 Banda Aceh. Skimming, as a reading strategy, enables students to rapidly identify key ideas and essential information within a text, facilitating better comprehension and engagement. This study was conducted using Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles, incorporating planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection involved classroom observations, student assessments, and teacher reflections. The findings indicate a substantial improvement in students' reading comprehension from Cycle I to Cycle II. In Cycle I, 81.60% of students demonstrated excellent comprehension skills, with an even greater percentage of improvement observed in Cycle II, which is 93.51%. The study highlights that student who initially struggled with reading comprehension showed significant progress, as skimming enabled them to focus on critical text elements such as titles, subheadings, and key terms. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the role of effective instructional strategies in fostering reading comprehension. Teachers played a pivotal role in guiding students through skimming, ensuring that they applied the technique correctly to optimize learning outcomes. Additionally, the structured implementation of skimming contributed to increased student motivation and active participation in reading activities. The findings of this study suggest that integrating the skimming technique into language learning curricula can enhance students’ ability to process and comprehend textual information efficiently. Future research should explore the long-term effects of skimming on reading proficiency and its applicability to different text genres. Combining skimming with other reading strategies may provide a more comprehensive approach to improving students’ overall literacy skills.

Abstract

The ability to write effectively is a fundamental academic skill for university students, yet many continue to face challenges in understanding complex texts, organizing ideas, and applying appropriate academic language. In response to these challenges, artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as SciSummary have emerged, offering automated summaries of scientific articles to aid comprehension and support writing development. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of SciSummary, its impact on their academic writing processes, and their attitudes toward AI-assisted learning. Using a quantitative approach, the study employed a close-ended questionnaire distributed to 48 English Education students at Universitas Islam As-Syafi’iyah who had used SciSummary in their academic writing assignments. Data were analyzed through scoring, descriptive statistics, and visualization. The results reveal a generally positive perception of SciSummary. Students agreed that the tool helps them better understand academic texts (mean score 4.4), increases reading efficiency (4.3), and assists in learning vocabulary and writing structures (4.2). Furthermore, SciSummary supports students in generating ideas (4.3), structuring texts (4.4), and increasing writing confidence (4.5). Attitudinal responses also showed strong agreement on the importance of integrating AI tools into writing courses (4.6), although some concerns about over-reliance on technology (3.0) and academic dishonesty (2.8) were noted. In conclusion, SciSummary is seen as a helpful AI tool that contributes positively to students’ comprehension and writing skills. Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) has gained traction in Indonesian higher education for its potential to foster critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. However, its implementation remains limited in non-practical courses, where adaptation poses specific challenges. This study examines students’ perceptions of PBL implementation in a non-practical instructional system design course, focusing on four key elements: the collaborative process, student voice, technological aspects, and public presentation. The study involved 98 third-year students and two facilitators. Data were collected through a self-developed questionnaire and follow-up focus group discussions. Quantitative findings indicated generally positive perceptions, particularly regarding technological readiness and instructor support. Qualitative insights revealed ongoing challenges in group collaboration, role clarity, and the effectiveness of peer feedback, especially in blended learning settings. Students valued the structure and support provided by the instructor and expressed motivation when given creative space within defined parameters. The study emphasizes the importance of consistent scaffolding, structured interactions, and a supportive learning environment to facilitate the successful implementation of PBL in non-practical settings. Recommendations are offered to inform future course design and improve student engagement in similar contexts.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an abrupt shift to blended learning (BL), exposing significant challenges for teachers, particularly senior educators perceived as vulnerable to technological demands. This study explored the resiliency of senior teachers in Angeles City, Philippines, who successfully implemented BL during the 2021–2022 school year. Using a qualitative multiple case study design, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten senior teachers (aged 51–61), all rated “Outstanding” in their performance. Findings revealed major challenges in online learning (technological hurdles, poor connectivity, low student motivation and attendance, difficulties in monitoring integrity) and offline modular learning (non-submission of modules, parental intervention, declining cooperation). Despite these obstacles, teachers displayed resilience through strategies such as continuous upskilling, flexibility in pedagogy, reward systems, strengthened home–school partnerships, optimized communication platforms, and interventions like home visits. Their coping mechanisms highlight passion, commitment, and adaptability. The study concludes that senior teachers are a resilient asset, “old but gold,” whose experiences offer valuable insights for educational policy and practice in times of crisis and beyond.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine teacher and student activities and improve students' writing skills by implementing the cooperative learning model, Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD), assisted by wall magazine media at State Elementary School (SDN) 72 Banda Aceh. This study employed a classroom action research (CAR) design involving 32 third-grade students as participants. Data were collected using teacher activity observation sheets, student activity observation sheets, and writing skill tests. The findings revealed a significant improvement in both teacher and student performance across the two cycles. In Cycle I, teacher activity reached 75% and was categorized as good, but several issues were identified, including limited apperception, insufficient motivation, and a lack of skill in using wall magazine media effectively. After addressing these weaknesses in Cycle II, teacher activity increased to 88% (very good category). Similarly, student activity rose from 70% in Cycle I to 85% in Cycle II. The improvement was attributed to better engagement, clearer instruction using wall magazines, and more effective motivation strategies. Moreover, students' writing skills showed substantial progress, with the average score increasing from 68% in Cycle I to 84% in Cycle II. Enhancements were observed, particularly in aligning content with the given theme and constructing more effective sentences. Overall, the findings indicate that applying the STAD model assisted by wall magazine media can effectively enhance both learning engagement and writing skills among elementary school students.
