Abstract

Students have difficulties in learning statistics. For example, students are difficult to solve problem related to reciting data from bar charts, calculate the mean value, and make a pie chart. One of the causes is statistics seldom connected with real-world applications, whereas students should be learning statistics in a real activity-based learning environment. PjBL (Project Based Learning) is a model of learning that integrates new knowledge based on experience in real activity and an in-depth investigation of a real-world topic. The purpose of this study was to describe the students’ project task answers and constraints through the implementation of PjBL. Subjects in this study were 29 students of class IX-5 SMPN 6 Banda Aceh. The data analyzed were students’ project task answers worked in groups and videos. The results showed that 2 of 5 groups could think of useful data that they can gather around them. As they displayed the collected data, all groups chose bar chart. No one group displayed data using pie chart. Furthermore, in interpreting their data, nevertheless 2 of 5 groups could interpret the data well. Moreover, there were students who were less active and less cooperative in the group, however there were students who were usually less active, but they could cooperate in group when researcher implemented the PjBL. When students presented project task, there was student who memorized the project task, so that when he forgot what he must presented, he spontaneously asked his group members what he had not delivered at the presentation. Keywords:learning process, statistics, project based learning.

Abstract

The purpose of Disaster Management Agency is to help the victims of disasters that often occur in our country. This research uses descriptive approach, by focusing on problems and phenomena that existed at the time of the research. Researchers multiply data and information from several disaster occurrence sites and distributing questionnaires to obtain more accurate data. The results of the research show there are several factors that cannot be met by the Disaster Management Agency. These factors make the performance of Disaster Management Agency to be not optimal and cause dissatisfaction for the victims of disaster. The conclusion is the lack of coordination between levels in the Disaster Management Agency, poor communication between the field (technical) with the part or higher level and the motivation of members who are still relatively low and the weakness of existing human resource capacity. Some things that should be done by the Disaster Management Agency, such as the improvement of internal facilities, improve the communication system and pay attention to the needs of its members.

Abstract

Cheating has become a deep-rooted problem in the academic settings. There are various reasons which cause cheating to remain undiminished despite attempts made to reduce the frequency of cheating in academia. This study focuses on the student perceptions of cheating behavior, the cheating practices done by the students, and the factors influencing the students’ cheating behavior during learning evaluation. The participants were 43 students of the Department of English Education, Faculty of Islamic Studies, University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. These respondents were asked to complete a survey questionnaire consisting of demographic questions and cheating-related questions from which data were compiled and analyzed using the SPSS. Findings showed that the students were aware that cheating was against moral values. However, as much as 84% of the students admitted to having done cheating during exam or when doing assignments. The most common cheating practices included asking for and swapping answers with friends during exam, copying materials from books/internet and submitting them, and collaborating with friends when doing assignments that meant to be completed individually. There were external and internal factors contributing to these cheating practices. The external ones were highly difficult exam, too many assignments, not enough time in completing the assignments, and helping friends, among others. And, the internal factors were related to being afraid of getting low scores and failing in exams, and the motivation to have a high score. On the other hand, about 16% of the students claimed to never cheat due to religious/moral reasons, pride in their own ability, and fear of getting punishment. The results of the study are hoped to give valuable input on the policy of academic cheating in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

The government has undertaken a relocation program to address the housing problems caused by the earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004 in Aceh. However, the relocation of tsunami survivors also caused other impacts after the relocation was carried out. If the relocation site is not as desirable, it can cause tsunami survivors to decide to out-migrate the relocation area. This study was conducted to determine factors that significantly affect the decision of migration of tsunami survivors from the relocation area. This research is expected to provide information on post-disaster relocation for consideration in making relocation policy in the future. We use classification tree, which is part of the CART (Classification and Regression Trees) method. The data used is from The Aftermaid of Aid (AoA) survey conducted by International Center for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS) and Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) during 2014-2015. The results of the research indicate the factors that significantly affect the migration decision of tsunami survivors from a relocation area are gender, age, and job before relocation, total assets, and the distance of relocation house to central market, house modification, and concerns about possible of future tsunami. Most affecting factor of migration decision, however, is the distance of relocation house to the central market, confirming the impact of sosio-economic factor of post-disaster relocation. The optimal classification tree obtained has a classification accuracy rate of 85, 64%.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the types of directive illocutionary acts and their functions appeared in the Holy Qur’an the translation edition. Austin (1962) was a pioneer in promoting the theory of Speech Acts then followed and developed by Searle (1976). Austin (1962) divided speech acts into locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. This research focuses on illocutionary acts. In addition, Searle (1976) in Cutting (2002) developed Austin’s theory and classified them into declaration, representative, commissive, directive and expressive. In order to find out the function of illocutionary acts appeared in The Holy Quran in translation edition, the writers apply the theory from Leech (1993). He divides the illocutionary function into four, there are competitive, convivial, collaborative and conflictive. Applying corpus linguistics as a tool of analysis is aimed to recover the frequentative verb of directive illocutionary acts in the holy Qur’an. Therefore, this research applies mixed method. By observing the frequentative verb of directive illocutionary acts used in the holy Qur’an, we will be able to analyze what kind of directive illocutionary acts are frequently used in the Holy Quran in translation edition? Who are the participants involved in the utterances? What are the messages conveyed in those utterances? According to the finding research there are three speakers and hearers. The first speaker is God to human as hearer. The second speaker is human to God as hearer. The last speaker is Satan to God as hearer. The results of the analysis show that there are two kinds of directive illocutionary act; they are commanding and requesting. While, the illocutionary function found is competitive. In addition, the most directive message used in the holy Qur’an is commanding with 575 words used.
