Abstract

Riau has many eco-lexicons related to rivers and their environment. This language phenomena is urgent to be researched, revealed and documented. This study is aimed to reveal the form and category of eco-lexicons found in the texts of Riau Malay. This research used critical ecolinguistics. Data were collected by applying observation and note-taking techniques. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the objective of the research. The results showed that there were many eco-lexicons of river environments found in the three folklores namely Ulak Patian dan Toi Burong Kwayang, Hikayat Kepenuhan, and Tuanku Datuk Panglima Nyarang. These eco-lexicons are revealed in the texts through their conversation and interaction. The river eco-lexicons found are in the form of basic words and some are affixed to the categories of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The existence of eco-lexicons related to rivers showed that the Bonai community depended on nature, especially the river and its environment. Importantly, their activities in managing their nature were local wisdom that existed for generations. Keywords: Eco-Lexicons, Malay Texts, Folklore, Eco-Linguistics

Abstract

This study aims to examine the time-management behaviours, the obstacles they faced, and the solutions that students formulated in time management for those that juggle the work-life balance and academic performance. Additionally, this study also tries to discern the academic achievement of the Fashion and Design Program students who work and study at the same time. This study employs the qualitative descriptive approach with the total sample method. A total of 30 students of the Fashion and Design Program at the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training of Syiah Kuala University who balance work-life and study were involved. The data were collected through questionnaires with the help of the Google Form in order to determine the students’ time-management behaviours. The t-test was used to find out their academic achievement. The result of this study shows that almost all students practice time-management by plan making in which all their activities are listed one by one. Some of the problems they faced were late assignment submission, abstention from the class due to illness, and some of them were late for class because of work. It seemed that the reasonable solutions they formulated were by completing the pending assignment in their spare time, evaluating the completed activities, as well as reorganizing and restructuring the ruined activities. The average score of the working students’ GPA is 3.64 which were categorized under the very good section. Therefore, it can be stated that work-life does not decrease students’ academic achievement. Keywords: Time-Management, Student who Work and Study, Academic Achievement

Abstract

This paper discusses the issue of binary opposition, especially dealing with the opposite genres between fiction and non-fiction in literary works. Commonly fiction is assumed to concern only with imaginations, while non-fiction with realities or facts. This issue is applied to examine the poems of number 1-9 through the work, titled "Ada Berita Apa Hari Ini, Den Sastro?" The theory of hermeneutics, especially covering the concept of hermeneutic circles, is the main tool to analyze. Finally, the results prove that the continual contradiction between news and story is intentionally constructed by poets to gain ambiguity effects of the poem. Keywords: opposition, fiction, non-fiction
