Abstract

This research empirically measures the economic exposure of 11 selected miscellaneous companies in Indonesia. It also attempts to empirically explore the influence of firm size (SIZE) export (EXPORT), liquidity (QR), and leverage (LTD) on the economic exposure of those companies. Annual data from 2007 to 2010 which was collected from the www.idx.co.id and www.bi.go.idwere used and analyzed by the multiple linear regression to measure the economic exposure and examine the influences of SIZE, EXPORT, QR, and LTD on the economic exposure. Both partial (t-test) and simultaneous (F-test) hypotheses were constructed and tested at the 5% level of significance. Data was analyzed by the software of SPSS for Windows. The research documented that, with the exception of the QR which has a negative and significant effect partially on the economic exposure, all other variables, i.e., SIZE, EXPORT, and LTD were found to have insignificant effects. Meanwhile, based on the F-test, the research found that the SIZE, EXPORT, QR, and LTD affected simultaneously and significantly the economic exposure of the companies. These findings imply that in order to manage their economic exposure, the companies should control these variables, especially QR.Keywords :Economic Exposure; Firm Size; Export Ratio; Quick Ratio; Long Term Debt to Total Asset Ratio; Miscellaneous Companies; Indonesia.

Abstract

In many cases, language researchers collect data from community of speakers and then go on to write their theses, academic articles book, and present at conferences. The benefit of the research to these communities is often minimal. There is often no social obligation for researchers to give back to communities via knowledge-sharing activities. This leaves a large gap in the process of language research as the research findings have little or no impact on the communities concerned. This paper discusses (i) shifting the ‘grab-and-go’ research approach to one that incorporates knowledge sharing and community engagement; (ii) ways in which researchers can engage communities to help them to document, preserve and revitalize their language drawing on specific examples of the cycle of language research, documentation and revitalization of Malacca Portuguese Creole.

Abstract

This study investigated the language learning strategies used by successful and less successful learners in the first grade of a senior high school in Banda Aceh. Both groups of learners were categorized based on their scores on an English test. A number of 20 successful and 20 less successful first grade students were then selected as the respondents. A questionnaire was used to identify language learning strategies used by both groups of these learners. The questionnaire was adapted from Oxford (1990), which consisted 30 items related to six categories of language learning strategies: memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social. This data were then analyzed by using the independent sample t-test. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference between language learning strategies used by successful and less successful learners. The successful learners were found to use the language learning strategies more frequently than less successful learners. Thus, both groups of learners obtained the highest scores in the metacognitive strategy; this implies that these learners understood how to manage their own learning. The lowest scores obtained by the successful learners were in the affective strategies, whilst the less successful learners were in the memory strategies. Other strategies (compensation, cognitive and social) were also used by both groups of these learners. Hence, less successful learners did not use all of the language learning strategies very often; this is what affected them to become less effective in language learning. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers should train the less successful learners to apply more language learning strategies in their learning to improve their academic achievement.
