Abstract

This study explores how figurative language in WayV’s Kick Back (秘境) album functions stylistically and how its meanings are transferred through translation for cross-cultural audiences. Music serves as a medium that bridges cultural boundaries, and the translation of figurative expressions plays a crucial role in shaping intercultural understanding. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research analyzes figurative devices found in three selected song lyrics through listening and note-taking techniques. Data were processed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, while semantic validation, expert judgment, and intrarater reliability ensured data credibility. The analysis identifies seven types of figurative language: simile (12 instances), personification (2), metonymy/synecdoche (1), nianlian (1), parallelism (1), contrast (2), and rhetorical question (1). Connotative meaning dominates the figurative expressions. Simile emerges as the most frequent stylistic device. The findings show that figurative language not only shapes the emotional and aesthetic tone of the songs but also presents challenges in translation, particularly in maintaining stylistic effect and cultural nuance. This study highlights how stylistic translation contributes to cross-cultural communication by enabling listeners from different linguistic backgrounds to access the intended meanings embedded in the lyrics.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of Feng Shui, a cornerstone of Chinese cultural heritage, on the aesthetic value of spatial design in architecture and interior design. Feng Shui emphasizes the harmony of energy (qi) within a space and is considered to enhance both comfort and visual appeal. The research utilizes a qualitative methodology with a cross-study approach, including interviews with two professionals in architecture. The findings demonstrate that the application of Feng Shui principles, such as the positioning of the main entrance, natural lighting, air circulation, and the selection of colors and materials, significantly affects both the aesthetics and comfort of a space. As a cultural practice, Feng Shui contributes to visual harmony and functionality and enhances occupants' interaction with their environment. Therefore, it serves as a holistic approach to design, integrating cultural wisdom, aesthetics, functionality, and energy balance to create spaces that are harmonious and comfortable.

Abstract

The translation of chengyu is an essential aspect of Mandarin language studies, as these expressions contain figurative meanings and cultural values that cannot always be interpreted literally. However, users in Indonesia often face difficulties in obtaining accurate chengyu translations, especially when relying on automatic translation tools. This study aims to analyze the comparative results of translating 25 Mandarin chengyu using two AI-based translation tools, Deepseek and Google Translate. Employing a descriptive qualitative analysis method, the data were collected from the translation outputs of both tools and compared based on idiomatic accuracy, cultural contextualization, and translation fluency. The findings indicate that Deepseek tends to produce more natural and accurate translations, as it successfully preserves idiomatic meaning and Mandarin cultural context. In contrast, Google Translate more frequently generates literal and lexical translations, causing several chengyu to deviate from their intended figurative meanings. Of the 25 chengyu analyzed, 17 showed similarities in meaning, while 8 displayed differences, with Deepseek demonstrating superiority in terms of semantic accuracy and word choice. This study concludes that Deepseek is more effective for translating Mandarin chengyu into Indonesian, as it provides translations results that better reflect cultural values ada idiomatic nuances.

Abstract

This study examines speech acts in teacher-student interactions during Mandarin language learning at Cheng Hoo Integrated Islamic Junior High School, Gowa, based on Searle's (1969) speech act theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, Data were collected through observation, audio recording, and field notes during two learning sessions with ninth-grade students. Analysis of 170 utterances revealed that directive speech acts were most dominant (58 utterances), followed by representative (23), declarative (20), expressive (14), and commissive (6). Speech acts served three primary functions: conative (68 utterances) to encourage student action, cognitive (46 utterances) to transfer knowledge, and affective (27 utterances) to build motivation, with 44 utterances performing dual functions. The integrated Islamic school context demonstrated harmonious integration of Mandarin learning with religious values through multilingual practices involving Mandarin, Indonesian, and Arabic. These findings indicate that directive speech acts effectively manage classroom dynamics while representative acts support material delivery. The study contributes to pragmatic theory in foreign language education and provides practical implications for designing communication strategies in culturally responsive teaching environments.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and categorize the translation techniques utilized in converting Chinese drama series titles into English. Utilizing Molina and Albir’s (2002) theoretical framework, which encompasses 18 translation techniques, this research examines 100 Chinese drama series titles available on the iQIYI and WeTV platforms along with their English translations. A descriptive-qualitative method with a content analysis approach was employed. The findings indicate that 12 out of the 18 techniques were identified, with Literal Translation, Modulation, and Discursive Creation emerging as the most frequently employed technique, accounting for 16,67% of the cases, followed by borrowing, adaptation, equivalence, and Amplification. These results demonstrate that translators tend to prioritize semantic accessibility for international audiences while striving to maintain Chinese cultural identity within the translated titles.

Abstract

Film as a contemporary medium has the capacity to convey philosophical values to the present generation. This study aims to analyze the ethical values of Taoism in the Chinese animated film Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child from the perspective of the Dao De Jing. The research employs a qualitative approach with content analysis methods. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman (2014) model. The primary source of analysis is the Dao De Jing 道 德 经 (dào dé jīng), the teaching of laozi in its English translation, referring to Yao, Chen, and Song (2017), who identified eight Taoism ethical values: a merciful and loving heart, be frugal, honest, and simple, be humble, non-action, gentleness, authenticity, harmony, and nurture. The findings reveal three main points. First, seven ethical values are identified, with a merciful and loving heart emerging as the most dominant in character formation. Second, the moral message emphasizes that sacrifice for the common good is more valuable than personal ambition, that cooperation can overcome differences, and that moral education transforms character. Third, the film Nezha demonstrates the continuing relevance of Taoism ethics in the Dao De Jing for addressing social issues in modern society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and frequency of word order errors in Mandarin sentences made by beginner learners. The data were obtained from written tests completed by 17 first-year students of the Mandarin Language Education Study Program at the State University of Makassar. The test consisted of 10 questions in two formats: (1) arranging scrambled words into grammatically correct sentences, and (2) translating Indonesian sentences into Mandarin. The results indicate that word order errors primarily occurred in five aspects, namely: (1) the placement of temporal adverbs, frequency adverbs, and interrogative words; (2) the position of resultative/aspectual complements; (3) the order of serial verbs; (4) the use of degree adverbs; and (5) the structure of numerals with classifiers. These errors were attributed to interference from the more flexible word order of the Indonesian language, as well as the students' insufficient understanding of Mandarin syntactic rules. These findings highlight the need for a systematic emphasis on learning sentence structures. The implications of this research are expected to serve as a foundation for formulating more effective teaching strategies for Mandarin sentence patterns for beginner learners.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the dynamics of social practices surrounding the Kebaya Encim by focusing on changes in its material elements and meanings. The Kebaya Encim is a form of traditional attire that emerged from a blend of Javanese, Dutch, Chinese, and Betawi cultures, giving it strong historical and cultural significance within society. As times have changed, the Kebaya Encim is no longer used solely as traditional attire but has undergone transformations in both function and appearance to align with the needs and trends of modern society. This study employs the social dynamics theory proposed by Shove, Pantzar, and Watson (2012) to examine how changes in social practices occur through the interplay between material, competence, and meaning. The focus of this study is to examine the changes in the Kebaya Encim regarding its material elements and meanings resulting from social and cultural developments. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, utilizing in-depth interviews, snowball sampling, as well as direct and digital observations via the social media platform TikTok. The results of the study indicate that the material elements of the Kebaya Encim have undergone changes in fabric, cut, motifs, color, and increasingly modern production technology. Meanwhile, the symbolic meaning of the Kebaya Encim has also evolved, encompassing its symbolic function, cultural identity, and the way people view it as part of their lifestyle and self-expression. These changes in both material and symbolic aspects influence one another and shape new social practices surrounding the use of the Kebaya Encim in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Small Group Discussion method in grammar learning within comprehensive courses, namely Gaoji Hanyu Zonghe (Advanced Comprehensive Chinese) for the Class of 2022 and Zhongji Hanyu Zonghe Shang (Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese I) for the Class of 2023 in the Chinese Language Education Study Program. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection comprising observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with students to elicit their responses and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the group discussion method in Chinese grammar learning. The results showed that the discussion method was successfully implemented in Gaoji Hanyu Zonghe (Advanced Comprehensive Chinese) for the Class of 2022, as students were active and responsive throughout the learning process. Small Group Discussion helped students study grammar before class, improved their critical thinking and public speaking skills, and created a more interactive learning environment. In addition, peer tutoring enabled students to understand the material more easily. In contrast, in Zhongji Hanyu Zonghe Shang (Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese I) for the Class of 2023, the Small Group Discussion method did not show significant results because students tended to be passive and lacked a strong grammar foundation. The identified obstacles included limited contributions from group members, misunderstandings of grammar, and reliance on AI to understand the material. This study concludes that the success of the discussion method is influenced by students' activity, readiness in basic grammar, and the lecturer's guidance during the learning process.
