Abstract

Mandarin language learning is still largely dominated by the use of imported textbooks oriented toward Chinese culture. This condition often causes difficulties for students in understanding reading materials due to differences in cultural background from their daily lives. This article aims to analyze the importance of cultural relevance in Mandarin reading instruction for Indonesian high school students. Based on the results of a study involving 155 high school students, it was found that 64% of students found it easier to understand Mandarin reading texts that incorporated Indonesian culture compared to texts focused on Chinese culture. In addition, around 58% of students admitted that they were less interested in reading materials discussing foreign cultures that were far removed from their experiences, such as winter festivals and traditional Chinese family traditions. These findings indicate that cultural relevance in learning materials has a significant influence on students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation in Mandarin language learning. Therefore, the integration of Indonesian local culture into Mandarin learning materials is considered important in creating learning that is more contextual, meaningful, and aligned with the characteristics of Indonesian students.

Abstract

Batik is one of Indonesia's cultural heritages, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. The development of Batik in Indonesia has been influenced not only by local cultures but also by interactions with various foreign cultures, including Chinese culture. These interactions gave rise to Peranakan batik, which developed primarily along Java's northern coast. This study aims to describe the forms of cultural acculturation found in Surakarta Batik and Peranakan Batik and to analyze the influence of Chinese culture on the development of batik motifs, colors, and philosophies in Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a library research approach. Data were collected from books, journals, and relevant documents concerning the history of Batik, the Chinese Peranakan community, and the development of Batik culture in Java. The findings reveal that cultural acculturation is reflected in the use of Chinese-inspired floral and faunal motifs, such as the phoenix and liong (dragon), the application of vibrant colors in Peranakan batik, and the emergence of new batik creations that combine elements of Surakarta court batik with coastal aesthetic traditions. Go Tik Swan emerged as an important figure who successfully integrated Javanese and Chinese cultural elements in the creation of Indonesian Batik. This acculturation demonstrates that Batik is a dynamic cultural product that continues to evolve without losing its local identity.

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of the metaphorical meanings of vocabulary relating to the elements of nature in Mandarin Chinese. The natural elements used in this study are those recognised in the Five Elements theory (五行 Wŭ Xíng), which is a concept of great importance to Chinese society. These five elements comprise water (水 shuǐ), fire (火 huǒ), wood (木 mù), metal (金 jīn), and earth (土 tǔ). The data for this study consists of natural element vocabulary found in Mandarin Chinese idioms ( 成语 chéngyŭ), thereby enabling the identification of metaphorical meanings associated with these natural elements as constituent parts of the idioms. The idiom data was drawn from the Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese, focusing on the five idioms with the highest frequency. Using a qualitative research method, the data was analysed using conceptual metaphor theory. This study found an association between the meanings of the natural element vocabulary and the Five-Element theory. Furthermore, interpretations were found that align with the natural properties of these elements. The research was conducted to gain an understanding of the Chinese people’s way of thinking regarding the vocabulary of natural elements.
