Abstract

The bullying phenomenon in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) has received serious attention, considering that Islamic boarding schools are educational institutions based on religious and moral values. This study aims to explore the factors causing bullying and understand the role of positive relationships between teachers and students in preventing and handling bullying cases in Islamic boarding schools. This study used a qualitative approach with an exploratory method at the An Najah Denanyar Islamic Boarding School in Jombang. Informants consisted of four teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, which were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results showed that the factors causing bullying were divided into two categories: intimidation (lack of social awareness, peer influence, arrogance, etc.) and victimization (physical condition, low social skills, etc.). A positive teacher-student relationship was proven to have a preventive and curative role against bullying behavior. This relationship strategy includes teacher characteristics such as affection and role models, and implementing a supportive approach both inside and outside the classroom. This study recommends the importance of fostering healthy interpersonal relationships in Islamic boarding schools to create a safe learning atmosphere and support the moral development of students.

Abstract

Ulama regeneration through pesantren education has become a strategic agenda in responding to the crisis of religious authority and the challenges of the modern era. This study explores the model of ulama cadre development within the tafaqquh fi al-din framework in two pesantren in Indonesia, focusing on epistemological reconstruction, curriculum innovation, technology integration, and structural and cultural barriers. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques include participant observation, in-depth interviews at Pesantren Gubuk Taqrib and Pesantren Nurul Falah in Bojonegoro, and document analysis, which were analyzed thematically. The results show that the concept of tafaqquh fi al-din has expanded its meaning from mere mastery of texts to the ability to contextualize religious knowledge with contemporary social realities. Curriculum innovation combines traditional methods such as sorogan and halaqah with modern pedagogical approaches such as project-based learning and scientific debate. Pesantren also utilizes digital technology to expand the reach of da'wah and strengthen Islamic literacy. However, challenges such as the perceived decline in the prestige of ulama, unclear state policies regarding pesantren, and a tendency toward epistemic closure hinder regeneration. This study emphasizes the importance of a new, post-traditional model of ulama: rooted in tradition, open to change, and capable of leading in a complex and pluralistic society.

Abstract

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest socio-religious organization in Indonesia, has a significant task in conveying Islamic teachings. The distinctive Islamic teachings brought by NU have four basic sublimations: tawasut, tawazun, tasamuh, and ta'adul. The value of tawasut (moderation) brought by NU as a way of thinking is urgent in society, both related to religion, social, politics, and even the domestic sphere. With this value of moderation, NU's presence can provide a legal umbrella for the values of Islamic teachings that have been misinterpreted by some groups, such as radicals who misunderstand the verses of jihad with inhumane offensive actions reinterpreted into a methodological argument for self-defense by applying the meaning of tolerance. This study found that NU's idea of moderation (tawasut) is reflected in three main areas: interfaith relations, gender relations, and contemporary legal ijtihad. NU emphasizes the importance of tolerance based on respect for existence, not theological truth, in the interreligious realm. In gender relations, NU rejects patriarchal domination and offers a reconstruction of women's jurisprudence based on maqasid al-sharia and hermeneutics. In modern legal istinbat, NU relies on scientific approaches such as tahqiqul manath, assessing legal validity based on the current illat and benefits, as in the case of the halal status of four types of crab, previously considered questionable.

Abstract

The digital era, marked by the VUCA phenomenon (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity), demands that Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) formulate adaptive and innovative strategies to remain relevant and produce students (santri) prepared to face contemporary challenges. This study aims to explore the strategies of Pondok Pesantren Darul Fiqhi and Pondok Pesantren Matholi’ul Anwar Lamongan in responding to the VUCA phenomenon and to identify forms of Islamic education transformation in the digital age. This research uses a qualitative case study approach with a multisite design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Pondok Pesantren Darul Fiqhi responds to VUCA by developing students' critical thinking skills, equipping them with practical competencies, and maintaining a curriculum grounded in classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). Meanwhile, Pondok Pesantren Matholi’ul Anwar emphasizes the development of critical thinking, the strengthening of students' practical skills, and the prioritization of character building and the preservation of traditional kitab kuning studies. A key form of digital transformation implemented by both pesantren is the use of YouTube live streaming for kitab kuning learning. This study contributes to the discourse on how pesantren can adapt to the digital era without abandoning traditional Islamic values.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have significant potential as a source of social capital to support regional development; however, this role has not been fully integrated into regional development policies. This study aims to analyze the contribution of pesantren as social capital to regional development through the leadership of kiai and the pesantren's institutional dynamics. This research employs a qualitative approach, drawing on literature review and empirical reflection on the social practices of pesantren in various local contexts. Data were collected from scholarly literature, policy documents, and empirical experiences related to social and community empowerment activities conducted by pesantren. The results indicate that kiai leadership plays a crucial role in building social trust, strengthening community cohesion, and encouraging public participation, which constitute the core elements of pesantren social capital. Furthermore, adaptive institutional dynamics enable pesantren to contribute to human resource development, community economic empowerment, and the internalization of religious values and local wisdom in regional development processes. These findings demonstrate that pesantrens can serve as strategic partners for local governments in achieving inclusive and sustainable development. This study concludes that optimizing the role of pesantren as social capital requires stronger institutional recognition and systematic integration into regional development policies.

Abstract

This study examines pesantren branding as a cultural strategy for building a brand culture rooted in Islamic scholarly traditions, an area that remains relatively underexplored in the educational branding literature. This study aims to analyze how branding practices are constructed, interpreted, and institutionalized in the context of pesantren. The research uses a qualitative case study design at Pondok Pesantren Hidayatut Thullab Kediri. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and then analyzed inductively and thematically. The results show that pesantren branding is developed through the practice of scientific writing, which serves as an institutional identity and collective culture. This branding is built through three main aspects: the scientific leadership initiative initiated by the (late) KH. Yasin Asmuni, institutional marketing support, and the formation of cadres based on mastery of scientific works. This study also identifies three models of pesantren branding: brand communication grounded in scientific narratives, brand expression through academic content, and brand management that adapts to cultural changes. These findings enrich educational branding studies by offering a branding model grounded in the intellectual traditions and scientific culture of pesantren.

Abstract

This study stems from the problem that the tradition of communal prayer at Madrasah Diniyah is often practiced as a routine but has not been studied in detail as a mechanism for internalizing religious values encompassing spiritual and socio-cultural dimensions. The purpose of this study is to examine the forms of religious values internalized through the tradition of communal prayer in learning at Madrasah Diniyah Nurul Karim Tanjungkarang Jati Kudus and to explain the process of internalization through the stages of value transformation, value transaction, and value internalization, along with their implications. This study uses a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation of a series of prayers (Al-Fatiha, selawat, doa pembuka hikmah, Selawat Nariyah, Selawat Asnawiyah), in-depth interviews with the head of the madrasah, ustaz/ustazah, santri, and documentation of prayer texts and activity archives. The data were analyzed thematically using triangulation and member checking. The results of the study show that communal prayer functions as an instrument of internalization that combines text, affection, and local identity, producing religious dispositions such as generosity, discipline, politeness, and consistent behavior. The process moves from understanding the meaning of manners, routine practices, and role models, to values embedded in character. The implications of the findings confirm two mutually reinforcing domains, namely spiritual implications (devotion, motivation for self-improvement, inner peace) and socio-cultural implications (student cohesion and preservation of NU traditions), thus requiring the strengthening of SOPs, the interpretation of readings, and attitude evaluation so that internalization is measurable and sustainable.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education. This study uses a literature review method. Data sources include journal articles, academic books, and official documents, such as Law No. 18 of 2019 concerning Pesantren. The results show that Islamic boarding schools have long adapted new technologies to improve the quality of education and management while maintaining their values and traditions. This is evident in various aspects such as the use of online learning platforms, the use of digital Al-Qur'an and Maktabah Syamilah applications, digital information and administration systems, the use of Islamic boarding school websites and social media for promotional and da'wah purposes with interactive content to reach a wider audience, and training for Islamic students (santri) on digital literacy and AI-based edutechnopreneurship. These conditions strengthen the role of pesantren in shaping a generation that is academically competent, technologically literate, has character, has social awareness, is independent, and can face the challenges of the world of work in the new technological era. Overall, this study shows that pesantrens are able to adapt without losing their identity, values, and traditions in integrating technology. This study contributes to enriching Islamic education studies by providing a conceptual mapping of the integration of new technologies, including AI, in the context of Islamic boarding schools, an area that remains relatively underexplored.
