Abstract

This research aims to analyze the key factors for the success of education at Gontor from the perspective of Muhammad Dawam Saleh. He is an alumnus of Pondok Gontor and the founder and leader of Pondok Pesantren Al-Ishlah Lamongan. This pesantren applies his analysis of the essence of Gontor's educational success. Additionally, he serves as a member of Gontor's Waqf Board. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and document studies. The results of the study reveal six essential foundations for Gontor's success. First, Gontor successfully implements a well-ordered boarding system, creating a conducive learning environment. Second, Gontor balances religious and general knowledge, providing comprehensive and relevant education. Third, the active use of Arabic and English broadens students' horizons. Fourth, strong discipline is applied in all areas of life, shaping resilient character. Fifth, extracurricular activities and leadership organizations provide valuable experiences for personal development. Sixth, the exemplary behavior of the Kiai in knowledge, practice, and worship serves as an inspiring example for students. An in-depth analysis of these six essences reveals the secret to Gontor's success in producing high-quality, integrity-driven youth. This research contributes to understanding effective and relevant educational strategies for addressing contemporary demands.

Abstract

Pesantren, Indonesia’s oldest Islamic educational institutions, have played a significant role in religious, social, and intellectual life for centuries. However, modernization and globalization have challenged their traditional frameworks. This study examines the evolution of pesantren education, focusing on continuity and change in curriculum and management while analyzing how pesantren adapt to contemporary demands without compromising their core values. Using a qualitative approach, the research employs historical analysis and field observations based on primary and secondary data. The findings reveal that pesantren have retained their emphasis on kitab kuning while integrating general and vocational subjects since the mid-20th century. Management practices have also shifted from centralized, kiai-led models to more participatory approaches. These changes are driven by community demands, government policies, and technological advancements. Although limited to a specific subset of pesantren, this study highlights their ability to balance tradition and innovation, demonstrating their potential as dynamic institutions capable of addressing contemporary educational and societal challenges.

Abstract

This study explores the application of environmental-based educational innovation in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to build environmentally friendly pesantren. The main focus of this study is the involvement of pesantren in environmental conservation, which is still limited even though Islamic teachings firmly support the values of ecological sustainability. This study uses a qualitative literature study method to analyze literature related to Islamic boarding schools, environmental education, and sustainability strategies in the context of Islamic educational institutions. The main findings reveal that pesantren have significant potential to become agents of change in environmentally-based education. Several pesantren have begun implementing environmentally friendly programs, but various challenges must be faced, including limited resources, infrastructure, and resistance to innovation. This study has essential value because it provides a model of educational innovation that integrates Islamic teachings with sustainability principles and is relevant to increasingly pressing global environmental challenges. Thus, this study strengthens the environmentally friendly Islamic education paradigm, which aligns with international efforts to address climate change.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of transformational leadership of village religious leaders (Kiai Kampung) in developing non-formal education and improving the community's quality of life. The research was conducted in Sumberrejo Village, Paiton District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java Province, focusing on five kiai who are prominent figures in the village. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then analyzed through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The study's results indicate that the transformational leadership applied by the Kiai Kampung in Sumberrejo Village is a driving force to achieve organizational goals and enhance the community's quality of life. The kiai utilizes four key characteristics of transformational leadership: (1) Idealized Influence/Charisma, (2) Intellectual Stimulation, (3) Individualized Consideration, and (4) Inspirational Motivation. Their leadership directs the development of community knowledge, with the kiai playing an active role in motivating, guiding, and inspiring individuals to achieve shared goals and visions. Direct involvement and close interaction between the kiai and the community significantly support achieving these goals. Through leadership based on close social interactions and continuous development, the quality of life in Sumberrejo Village, particularly in education and social empowerment, has experienced significant improvement. This study demonstrates that kiai kampung leadership can be a key factor in community empowerment at the local level.

Abstract

This study aims to describe ecological leadership as a form of leadership of Kiai M. Faizi, who is concerned about environmental cleanliness, which is implemented in managing a waste-free Islamic boarding school, especially plastic waste. This study was conducted at the Annuqayah Islamic Boarding School in the Sawajarin area, using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological type. Data collection used a structured interview method with the caretaker, in-depth observation of ecological plastic waste-free practices, and documentation. The analysis method used the Moustakas structured pattern: 1) description of phenomena, 2) horizonalization, 3) cluster of meaning, and 4) essence description. The study results showed that M. Faizi's leadership in forming the ecological piety of students used two steps, namely, revitalization of religious teachings and role models and changing the slogan "put trash in its place, not to trash." The ecological leadership pattern applied has an impact in the form of an attitude of caring for the environment, a clean and healthy lifestyle, a comfortable Islamic boarding school environment, and free from trash, mainly plastic waste.

Abstract

The learning design that aligns with students' characteristics and learning styles is a crucial focus for educators. This article is compelling as it highlights the Bahtsul Masa'il-based learning model, which offers a unique approach to enhancing self-efficacy through active engagement, independent learning, and critical thinking skills, particularly in the pesantren environment. This study aims to analyze the contribution of Bahtsul Masa'il in shaping students' self-efficacy through the heutagogy approach. Self-efficacy is formed through an individual's belief in their ability to achieve specific goals, including adaptability and critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, heutagogy is positioned as a self-directed learning strategy that places students at the center, encouraging active involvement in designing learning content and applying knowledge contextually. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, collecting data through observations and interviews with Asatidz and Kitab Kuning learners at the Ulya and Wustho levels in Pondok Pesantren Assalafi Al Fithrah Surabaya. Data analysis techniques include triangulation. The findings reveal that Bahtsul Masa'il significantly enhances students' self-efficacy through active problem-solving, resilience development, confidence building, and peer learning support. The heutagogy approach complements this process by granting autonomy to students to identify problems, seek solutions, and apply knowledge independently while remaining guided by the Bahtsul Masa'il framework. These findings affirm that integrating both approaches is relevant to modern educational needs and effective in shaping independent, critical, and confident learners.

Abstract

Islamic education is a place to form humans who can carry out their duties as caliphs on earth. Knowledge of the concepts of science and scholars is needed to understand and develop science and scholars in Islamic teachings combined with the philosophy of Islamic education. This concept is the basis for understanding the philosophy of Islamic education. The two have a close relationship. The purpose of this research is to describe the concept of science according to Imam Al-Ghazali and to find out the role of ulama' according to Imam Al-Ghazali in the book of Fatihatul 'Ulum. This research method uses a literature review focused on the book of Fatihah al-Ulum. The data collection technique uses the documentation method related to the book of Fatihah al-Ulum and other works that are still one theme of discussion. Analysis of this literature study uses content analysis by looking at the validity of the original data and explaining it again by comparing other sources. First, researchers found knowledge as the main foundation of a person so that he can know Allah SWT. Studying science is considered something with good intentions by seeking the pleasure of Allah SWT. After knowledge is obtained, a person will become more moral and can practice religious and general knowledge with a heart that is always linked to Allah SWT. Secondly, being an ulama' is a big responsibility because he is the heir of the Prophet SAW. Ulama' must link their hearts to seek the pleasure of Allah, leave the affairs or desires of the world, and teach all the knowledge they have so that their students can take the path of Allah's pleasure.

Abstract

Al-Ghazālī is one of the foremost thinkers in the tradition of Islamic thought. His life story has inspired many historians worldwide to document his journey. His interdisciplinary thinking has given rise to numerous works that explore his contributions from various scholarly perspectives. Although his ideas culminated in a philosophical product that diverged from the tradition of earlier philosophers, Al-Ghazālī could not entirely avoid employing philosophical logic in developing a philosophy of knowledge oriented towards unveiling the ultimate truth. This paper seeks to uncover Al-Ghazālī's philosophy of knowledge, particularly within the ontology and epistemology he developed. His philosophy of knowledge is rooted in a theological affirmation of God's oneness. Building upon this ontological foundation, Al-Ghazālī posits a single source of knowledge. Consequently, he opposes the compartmentalization of knowledge into distinct categories. Moreover, since knowledge emanates from the true substance of God, it attains a noble status in Al-Ghazālī's understanding. For Al-Ghazālī, authentic knowledge is what he terms al-ilmu al-yaqini, which can only be achieved through the illumination of the heart or mukasyafah. His concept of al-ilmu al-yaqini arises from his belief that the purpose of his scholarly journey is to uncover the substance of all realities or haqaiq al-umur. His epistemological perspective is characterized by a strong monism, emphasizing that all knowledge ultimately derives from and leads back to the singular divine source.
