The Journal of Pesantren and Diniyah Studies publishes research articles covering Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) discourse and diniyah education, including the critical history of pesantren, Islamic education, Kitab Kuning and Turath studies—especially the work of Indonesian ulama (Muslim Scholar), thoughts of Kiai or Pesantren figures, Pesantren curriculum, studies of diniyah education institutions, Pesantren leadership, Pesantren policy or management, and the like. Abstract

This research explores the significance of ushul al-fiqh within the paradigm of the unity of knowledge (Unity of Science), focusing on the integration between Islamic law and other sciences. The main concern is how ushul al-fiqh can provide a holistic theoretical foundation for religious values such as wisdom, justice, and public welfare in everyday life. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a literature review to explore the meaning, perception, and complex context within a research framework. Key findings indicate that ushul al-fiqh plays a crucial role in understanding the fundamentals of Islamic law and integrating religious aspects, reason, and practical experience in life. This research aims to identify and analyze the principles of ushul al-fiqh that can support the integration of various scientific disciplines and assess their relevance in contemporary knowledge. The unity of knowledge in this research refers to efforts to amalgamate various disciplines into an interconnected entity. This involves integrating Islamic law (ushul al-fiqh) with other sciences, such as logic, Arabic grammar, theology, jurisprudence, and Qur'anic and Hadith studies. In this context, the unity of knowledge aims to create coherence among various branches of knowledge to provide a holistic understanding of religious values such as wisdom, justice, and public welfare in everyday life.

Abstract

The implications for the entrepreneurial competence of students at Pondok Pesantren Fathul Ulum can be identified through research encompassing the planning, implementation, and evaluation of entrepreneurship education. The research method employed is qualitative with a phenomenological approach, utilizing in-depth observation, interviews, and documentation for data collection. SWOT analysis is used as the analytical technique. The validity test employs source triangulation and technique triangulation methods. The research results indicate that the planning of entrepreneurship education at Pondok Pesantren Fathul Ulum is incorporated into an entrepreneurship learning curriculum consisting of theory- and practice-based learning plans. Entrepreneurship education is conducted using two methods: theory-based learning and practice-based learning. Entrepreneurship education achievement is evaluated through two direct methods (learning process) and post-learning. The evaluation of entrepreneurship education learning uses the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) evaluation model. The entrepreneurial competence of students at Pondok Pesantren Fathul Ulum is designed to develop social and corporate entrepreneurship competencies. The management of entrepreneurship education has implications for students' acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, aiming to equip them with the ability and competence to become initiators in entrepreneurship.

Abstract

In contemporary Islamic scholarship, the study of hadith is of paramount importance. However, Ma'had Aly Hasyim Asy'ari Tebuireng's multidisciplinary approach in hadith studies has not yet reached a third of the monodisciplinary research. This study addresses two main topics: first, the urgency of a multidisciplinary approach in hadith studies at Ma'had Aly; second, to describe the multidisciplinary approaches in hadith studies. The current state of hadith studies at Ma'had Aly Hasyim Asy'ari Tebuireng is predominantly monodisciplinary, with monodisciplinary research accounting for 70% of the theses from 2020 to 2023. In contrast, the multidisciplinary approach in hadith studies at Ma'had Aly Tebuireng remains below 10%. Therefore, it is essential to enhance the approaches that support hadith's research at Ma'had Aly Tebuireng, specifically by incorporating hermeneutics, stylistics, and ethno/netnography. These interdisciplinary methodologies offer a more nuanced and comprehensive analysis of hadith by integrating perspectives from various academic disciplines. This approach deepens the understanding of hadith and broadens the scope of research, making it more relevant to contemporary issues and diverse contexts.

Abstract

Jihad and pesantren are two things that have a connection, especially seeing the many phenomena that occur that lead to pesantren institutions. The purpose of this research is to find out the concept of pesantren-style jihad. Researchers used qualitative methods with the type of field research. Researchers used primary data sources as basic data obtained from analyzing phenomena and secondary data in books, journals, theses, and online and physically relevant to the research. In conducting research, researchers use documentation techniques as data collection techniques. The study's results explained that jihad has many versions, meanings, and perspectives. Still, the explanation that has been explained provides a conceptual description of pesantren-style jihad, namely patience in facing trials (Ali Imran: 142), maintaining the identity of the Muslim personality (Al-'Ankabut: 6), and the ability to restrain lust (Q.S At-Taubah: 79). It was also found that pesantren can be an alternative in facing the challenges of globalization that refer to juvenile delinquency by becoming a workshop for character cultivation. In addition, pesantren alums can be a reference in the environment to answer globalization problems based on a moderate mindset between religion and the state.

Abstract

Leadership style in Islamic boarding schools is often rooted in the charisma and independence of a leader known as Kiai, resulting in a predominantly authoritarian leadership style. This research aims to analyze the leadership style within Islamic boarding school institutions. The subject of this research is the Contemporary Islamic Boarding School Al-Hilmu in Prigen, Pasuruan. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive, focusing on 1) the tendencies of leadership styles in boarding schools and several aspects contributing to these styles. Data collection methods include observation, interviews, and documentation, while data analysis involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings conclude that 1) Based on the study of power source utilization, leadership behavior, and decision-making, it is concluded that the leadership style in the contemporary Islamic boarding school Al-Hilmu Prigen Pasuruan predominantly emphasizes a democratic leadership style. 2) Several factors contributing directly to the democratic leadership style in Al-Hilmu Prigen Pasuruan include a) vision and mission factors, b) characteristics and strengths of the boarding school, and c) educational levels (ability factor).

Abstract

Religious moderation is one of the key philosophies underpinning Indonesian society's lives. However, with the advancement of technology, many seeds of propaganda and intolerant preaching in the name of religion have emerged on social media. This phenomenon potentially threatens Indonesians' understanding of religious moderation. Currently, there are not many influencers, particularly from the pesantren community, who dare to promote moderate Islam on social media. This research aims to examine the methods and role of Ismael al-Kholilie in spreading peaceful da'wah on Instagram. This study employs a qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The findings presented an analytical description of the content, combined with discourse analysis theory on social media related to Lora Ismael's da'wah activities. This research study uses Alvin L. Bertran's role theory. The results of this research reveal that with the peaceful da'wah methods applied by Lora Ismael al-Kholilie, he has made a significant contribution to nurturing the understanding of moderation in Indonesian society. By packaging da'wah concepts and methods into a narrative, the messages Lora Ismael wishes to convey become more impactful and captivating to readers, making them more readily accepted.

Abstract

This article examines the leadership process in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in managing the production of excellent human resources. Superior pesantren resources are produced through transcendental activities, commitment to traditional pesantren scholarly traditions and transmissions, internalization of moral exemplarity, and playing a role in empowering education and social transformation in the community. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, sharpening phenomenological research by describing the general meaning of several cases in pesantren based on the various life experiences of pesantren residents. The data collection methods for this research include interviews, observations, artifacts, autoethnography, and focus groups. This research aims to study the production of pesantren human resources. The results of this study are: first, pesantren leadership produces educated individuals who can carry out Islamic preaching (da'wah Islamiah) and provide services or guidance to the community to become knowledgeable, faithful, morally upright, responsible individuals with an awareness of the importance of life for the hereafter. Second, pesantren leadership educates students and the community to acquire various life skills as a foundation for independent living.

Abstract

Among the forms of etiquette in prayer is khushu, which involves bringing one's heart into communication with the Creator through prayer. In practice, achieving khushu is not easy. Scholars have their methods to attain khushu in worship. In this regard, Sufi scholars have their instruments for achieving khushu by invoking the spirituality of their teacher as a means to connect with Allah SWT. This method is commonly known as rabithah. This paper explores the argument's validity for rabithah as an instrument for achieving khushu, widely practiced by Sufi adherents of the Naqshabandiyah tariqah. This paper focuses on KH Muhammad Utsman Al-Ishaqi's opinion of rabithah in detail. This qualitative research utilizes library research, with data from literature reviews presented descriptively. Inductive analysis is used to examine Kiai Utsman's works. The results show that Kiai Utsman reintroduces rabithah to achieve khushu in prayer. He reinstates rabithah, which had been considered to deviate from Islamic law.

Abstract

This research analyzes the readiness and feasibility of establishing Ma'had Aly An-Nur 1 Malang Quran and Quran Science Study Program by concentrating on Balāghat al-Quran (Rhetoric of Quran Studies) and looking at the expected design model of Quran experts. As an educational institution at the stratum one (S1) level, Ma'had Aly An-Nur 1 grows and originates from the characteristics of pesantren. This qualitative research explores data sources through structured interviews supported by literature data in the form of documents related to the establishment of Ma'had Aly An-Nur. This research is an important part of refining the terms and prerequisites for establishing Ma'had Aly in accordance with the Minister of Religion Regulation 32 of 2020 concerning Ma'had Aly. The results showed that Ma'had Aly Annur 1 Malang took the al-Quran wa Ulumuhu (Quran and Quran Science) Study Program with three arguments, namely the characteristics of the founders of the pesantren, the availability of the Quran memorization program, the need for a higher level of education after graduating from formal and diniyah schools while still affirming the distinctiveness of the pesantren. At the same time, the Takhassus of Balāghat al-Quran was chosen based on expertise in linguistic aspects and the need for proselytizers. The analysis results show the readiness and feasibility of establishing Ma'had Aly based on applicable regulations. The design of the Quran expert developed through 3 stages: pre-conditions, strengthening Quranic knowledge, and internalizing Quranic rhetoric. Supported by a curriculum structure consisting of 3 groups (basic, main, and supporting), Quran experts are designed to become qāri (readers), balīgh (rhetoricians), and dā'ī (preachers).

Abstract

The practice of tarawih prayer is inseparable from the influence of local communities' history, culture, and traditions, which creates variations in practice in different regions. There are differences of opinion regarding the number of rak'ahs and the procedure for performing tarawih prayers, especially in Indonesia, where some follow 8 rak'ahs. In comparison, others follow 20 rak'ahs, each with a different basis. This article aims to provide an in-depth understanding of these differences and examines the kitab Kasyfu at-Tabārih fī Bayāni Ṣalat at-Tarāwīh by KH. Abul Faḍol bin Abdus Syakur as-Senūri at-Tūbāni, which thoroughly explores the tarawih prayer. This literature research was conducted using an analytical descriptive approach, examining related texts and documents. The study's findings indicate that the differences in the number of rak'ahs and procedures of the tarawih prayer result from different interpretations of the Prophetic traditions and the practices of the Companions. This research is expected to enrich Islamic insights and reduce the potential for intergroup conflict within Muslims regarding the implementation of tarawih prayers.
