Abstract

For hundred of years Reformed churches in Indonesia have barred children from receiving the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper. This prohibition rests on the age-of-discernment rule based on the interpretation of 1 Corinthians 11:28. Children are considered unable to self-examine and acknowledge God's body. Meanwhile, supporters of paedocommunion put forward their case by defending the rights that children have as members of God's covenant people. This study aims to offer an alternative argument to the debate by interpreting the key passage 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 and analyzing historical documents of the Reformed churches. The results of the study prove that Holy Communion is the best means of grace to express the unity of all members of Baptism. Thus, any decision regarding children participation in the Holy Communion will have an impact on the unity of the body of Christ.

Abstract

This article is an analysis of God's faithfulness in Hosea 3:1-5. God used the metaphor of the story of Hosea and Gomer to express His loyalty to the Israelites who always committed spiritual prostitution. He redeemed them from sin. This is described in the story of Hosea as the existence of God who wants to love again and buy his wife Gomer as the existence of the Israelites. Using four layer meaning exegesis method (historia, theoria, moral, and anagogic), this research shows that God's faithfulness to the Israelites can be seen through a process of bringing the Israelites back to God, in which there is the role of God and also humans. Men feel God's faithfulness when they repent and restored by Him.

Abstract

Why do suffering Christians often feel frustrated? They seem don't see God's help, or lose hope. How should a Christian deal with suffering? This research aims to answer these questions. Using the Bible, commentaries, and related research articles, the author carries out an exegesis of Lamentations 3:21-33. Through this research it was found that the Prophet Jeremiah expressed his concern for the suffering experienced by the people of Judah. However, through that suffering, God's truth was revealed. In the midst of the suffering experienced by his people, Jeremiah had confidence in God's never-ending care, faithful love and mercy. The prophet believed and relied on Allah to provide for his needs in the midst of suffering. This hope in suffering gives strength to people experiencing suffering today, especially Christians.

Abstract

Anthropocentrism is usually accused of being the cause of the birth of hierarchical relations between humans and other non-human creatures. Humans are placed at the center of everything and gain legitimacy as rulers of the universe and have an impact on the destruction of nature. Humans are required to change their perspective and behavior towards nature to save nature from further damage. This article aims to formulate a new metaphor of nature from Sallie McFague’s metaphor that the world (universe) is the body of God as an effort to maintain the sustainability of life inside the body of God. This research is carried out by reviewing literatures that are relevant. Based on the research, it was found that viewing nature as the body of God can raise awareness to preserve forests.

Abstract

The Gospel of John is one of the four Gospels. It is called the Gospel because it contains news about the journey and ministry of the Lord Jesus as the living Savior. However, the Gospel of John has very different characteristics from the other Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke). The influence of the Old Testament (OT) is very strong, so we suspect that the identity of Jesus is truly an inseparable part of Jewish history, so that if the Jews reject Christ, they also reject Him who is part of themselves (John 1:11). This paper attempts to elaborate on the identity of λόγος (logos) which is often the subject of theological debate. The intended effort is made through a biblical study of John 1:1-5. Therefore, the research method used in this paper focuses on the analysis of the text of John 1:1-5 in order to trace the identity of the Logos. The findings of this study show that the logos (Jesus Christ) is also God. The Son of God who revealed the Father to humans. Revelation through Jesus Christ aims to make God (the second person) known to humans.
