Abstract

Indonesia continues to face a triple burden of nutritional challenges, including stunting, wasting, and obesity. Adolescents represent a nutritionally vulnerable population due to factors such as lifestyle choices, inadequate nutritional knowledge, and unhealthy dietary habits. These factors contribute to nutritional problems such as anemia, chronic energy deficiency (CED), and obesity. Objective: This study aims to analyze the consumption patterns of animal-based side dishes and assess the nutritional status of female students at SMP Negeri 9 Kendari. Methodology: This descriptive study included a total population of 614 female students, with a sample of 35 selected using a cluster random sampling method. Data were collected from one randomly selected class. Results: Findings revealed that 62.8% of the respondents were classified as thin or severely thin, 28.6% had normal nutritional status, and 8.6% were obese. The consumption pattern of animal-based side dishes showed that most types were rarely consumed, with fish being the most commonly consumed source of animal protein, reported by 48.5% of respondents (17 students). Conclusion: The study concludes that the consumption of animal protein among the respondents is considerably low, and the majority of the students exhibit nutritional statuses classified as thin or severely thin (62.8%).

Abstract

Leprosy remains a global health issue, with Indonesia ranking third in the world after India and Brazil. In Southeast Sulawesi, leprosy prevalence has increased over the past five years, with a new case detection rate of 8.45 per 100,000 population in 2022. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the types of leprosy, Paucibacillary (PB) and Multibacillary (MB), and the treatment success rate in Southeast Sulawesi from 2018 to 2022. This research employs an observational study with a correlation approach. Secondary data were obtained from the 2024 Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Health Profile. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analysis with Pearson correlation tests. The results showed that the treatment success rate for MB leprosy increased from 77.20% in 2020 to 87.76% in 2022, while PB leprosy treatment success decreased from 85.71% to 70.27% over the same period. A significant relationship was found between the number of PB and MB leprosy cases and treatment success rates (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the higher the number of leprosy cases, the higher the treatment success rate. This study is expected to serve as a basis for more effective leprosy control programs in Southeast Sulawesi

Abstract

Breastfeeding practices are critical for child nutrition, particularly in coastal areas where dietary and socio-economic challenges are common. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with breastfeeding practices among mothers of children aged 6–23 months in Kendari City, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2024, involving 220 mothers selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire via Epicollect5. Factors analyzed included maternal, household, and dietary variables. Statistical analyses involved chi-square tests and logistic regression, with a significance level set at p-value <0.05. The results showed that mothers who consumed additional foods during breastfeeding were 2.9 times more likely to practice optimal breastfeeding compared to those who did not (OR=2.9; 95% CI: 1.33–6.44; p=0.007). Similarly, mothers who consumed nutritional supplements were 2.5 times more likely to engage in good breastfeeding practices (OR=2.5; 95% CI: 1.27–5.08; p=0.008). These findings indicate that dietary factors significantly influence breastfeeding practices. Promoting the consumption of additional foods and nutritional supplements during breastfeeding can enhance breastfeeding practices. Targeted interventions focusing on dietary improvements are essential to support maternal and child health in coastal communities

Abstract

Basic sanitation is an effort to improve public health by ensuring clean and healthy environmental conditions. Coastal areas are known to face unique challenges, problems and opportunities in the health sector, especially environmental sanitation, compared to other regions. The study aims to determine the basic sanitation conditions in the coastal area of North Moramo, South Konawe District in 2024. The type of this study is descriptive observational which was carried out in the coastal area of North Moramo, especially Wawatu Village in July 2024. The sample was 100 respondents determined using techniques accidental sampling. Data collection by filling out questionnaires and observation sheets then analyzed univariately using a computer program. The results showed that majority of respondents used refilled water as the main source of drinking water without processing it. In addition, they used private septic tank latrines. Garbage is disposed of in landfills in open containers and processed by burning it. Disposal of waste water, the majority of respondents have disposed of their waste in the waste water disposal channel. Thus, it is hoped that the coastal communities of North Moramo need to treat their water first before drinking, use closed and watertight trash containers and not burn rubbish.
