Abstract

There are three problems discussed in this research, those are; What types of language style used by the main character in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close movie, what the function of language style used by the main character in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close movie and what factors that influence the main character to use language style in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close movie. The object of the research is the main character's utterance taken from a movie entitled Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Stephen Daldry. The method applied in this research is qualitative method because the researcher only gives description and explanation related to the data. The result shows that there are five type of language style and four functions of language style used by the main character as well as the factor influences described by Hymes theory can be found in the movie. The most type of language style used by the main character is consultative style. While the most function used by the main character is referential function.

Abstract

The two main aspects to be considered in translating source language are linguistics and non linguistic. Transitivity system and gramatical complexity belong to the aspect of linguistic and should be maintained by the translator to translate the source language accurately. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the system of transitivity and grammatical complexity variations in interlingual translation: English-Malay subtitle of Avatar, (2) to describe the factors that motivate the occurance of the variations, (3) to desscribe the effects of the occurance of the variations in aspect of accuracy and acceptability. The result of data analysis shows that the variation of transitivity system and gramatical complexity is very low. The factor motivating the occurrence of variation are intratextual context, intertextual context and situational context. The occuring variations bring negative effect on accuracy and acceptability of the translation.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the extent to which women's human rights and the progress made in protecting women under human rights law will impact international humanitarian law. This study uses a qualitative method with an explanative pattern. The analysis shows that the topic of women and human rights is currently receiving increasing respect as separate areas of international law. The hope is that recognition of women's rights in international humanitarian law will take into account the recognition of women's experiences in armed conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the elements of realism contained in the short story entitled A Clean Well Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway. This study uses qualitative research method. The approach used is literary sociology using structuralism theory focusing on the analysis of intrinsic elements, namely character and setting. The analysis shows that this short story represents Ernest Hemingway's realism. This can be seen from the appearing characters and settings which are part of the middle or lower class society. In addition, the cafe in this short story also shows the author's desire for a peaceful social situation; the opposite of industrialization which is full of greed.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the paranoid disorder reflected in Poe’s A Tale Tell Heart. The researcher conducts a qualitative research by applying psychological approach. This study uses Freud’s theory to explain the personality of the main character. The finding of the research shows that the main character has a mental disorder in form of personality disorder.The main character perceived paranoid and eventually as paranoid sufferer, the main character commits to be a murderer of another character.

Abstract

Movies are at times reflections of the society in which the story takes place. “Tilik” is one of the short movies that has gone viral lately due to the somewhat controversial yet common theme it raises: common housewives’ talk. The talk the movie presents is the so-called gossip surrounding a young beautiful village dream female named Dian, whose job and personality were deemed as murky. This study aims to explore the language used by one of the main characters in the movie, bu Tejo, whose expressions are highly influencing in the movie, in terms of the speech acts she performed. Her appearance has ignited lively discussions in society. It is descriptive in nature and carried out by the observation method. The result reveals that her speech acts are mostly in the form of representatives. She was also seen to produce directives, commissives, and expressives whose number are in line respectively. Her speech acts are for the most part direct, in which the functions are similar to the structure of her utterances.

Abstract

This study purposed in revealing : (1) the reflection of dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You” and (2) the psychological state of Lydia as the child of dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You”. Descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the novel entitled “Everything I Never Told You” written by Celeste Ng as the object of research. The method of collecting data in this research includes reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analysing the data are done by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. Dysfunctional family concept and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis are used in analyzing the data. The finding shows that : (1) there are some reflections indicate the dysfunctional family in Celeste Ng’s “Everything I Never Told You”, such as, the cause of dysfunctional family shown by authoritarian parents, the characteristics of dysfunctional family shown by prolonged conflict and perfectionist expectation toward children, and the type of dysfunctional family in form of chronic conflict family; (2) the psychological state of Lydia as the child of dysfunctional family is illustrated by isolated and empty feeling, dependent due to fear of being abandoned, super responsibility by adopting the enabler type, feel guilty when looking for satisfaction for herself, and the ego defense mechanism in the form of regression. The psychological state of Lydia is described through the apparatus in her unconscious mind, there are, the id, the superego, and the ego.

Abstract

A movie is a work of literature bringing out perspective of social issue, to mention here is a woman in its relation with system of society. Resistance is one among several ways of how women interact with wider society. After watching Lady Bird movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the writers found that the idea of resistance is vividly seen. Thus, this study is to find out the main character’s resistance in the movie. To reveal the main character’s resistance, this study uses descriptive qualitative research so that all information, conditions, symptoms, and phenomena can be described in detail. There are two kinds of resistances found, the first is resistance toward the family and the second is resistance toward the wider society.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze : (1) the fatherhood in Marc Foster’s Finding Neverland (2) the psychological statement of James Barrie who commit to be father in Marc Foster’s Finding Neverland. The research is in form of descriptive qualitative analysis in analyzing Marc Foster’s Finding Neverland (2004) movie as the object of the research. The data analyzed by using Psychology of Literature theory, Fatherhood theory, Anna Freud’s Defense Mechanism, and Alter Ego theory. The researcher uses two types of data sources, they are main data and supporting data. The method of collecting data includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, simplying, and selecting. The methods of analyzing the data includes exposing, explaining, and interpreting. The result of the research, first, it shows that the main character reflected the fatherhood through the fulfillment of father’s roles he is doing in Marc Foster’s Finding Neverland such as being a companion, teacher, care provider, moral guide, role model, breadwinner, protector, and spouse. For the second, the psychological state of James James Barrie as he has psychological trauma, he uses repression and reversal as his defense mechanism to deal with his trauma, and he has also an alter ego or different personality.
